Current mood:  lonely
So. It's quite sad. But my band and I are all separated.

This is just a quick note to let you know where you can find us!

I currently writing to you from a hotel in Fargo, North Dakota, I am touring around Canada as part of Dan Mangan's band and we are on our way to Windsor, Ontario. You can check out the dates on his website here.

Andrew is on tour playing bass for Elias, you can find their dates here!

Jeffery is on tour with Sam Bradley.

and Johnny 5 is, of course, on tour with Tegan and Sara.

Come find us and say hello!

xo. Laura

ps. Don't worry this is only a temporary thing.

Hi friends!

After our show at the Park Theater in Winnipeg, we got to relax in Altona, MB at Andrew's parents place. Altona is probably the flattest town in Canada...so biking is a great pass time, you can go forever! (unlike here in North Vancouver).  Just as we arrived, so did their first week of summer, and with it, mosquitoes.  I have never seen so many in one place!  OFF! was my new best friend.

Post getting fed and slept and relaxed  in Altona, we headed off back West to Brandon for the Western Canadian Music Awards! (This time I did not accidentally throw out my ipod in a Brandon gas station...) The awards are a three day conference and festival with the awards show on the fourth evening. Our showcase was on Friday in a MASSIVE country bar. We did not play country music. The rest of the weekend was so amazing, Western Canada is home to many, many amazing and kind musicians. So we spent our time reuniting with old friends and making lots of new ones. Sunday Andrew got to take part in the Record of the Week Club by writing a song with Matt of the Liptonians and Leeroy Stagger to perform at the awards ceremony that evening!

After much debauchery and good times we drove home for a solid day across the four provinces that make up Western Canada to our warm and lonely beds.

Current mood:  amorous
Since we left Rosthurn, SK, we played a heartwarming show with three other touring Vancouver bands in Regina, Joseph Blood, Shiloh Lindsay and Eldorado. Three country heavy-weight heart breakers.

Next up we played our only theater show of the tour at the beautiful Park theater in Winnipeg, MB.  For the last couple of days we have been kicking back and taking it easy at Andrew's parents house in Altona, MB. Tomorrow we head off to Brandon for the Western Canadian Music awards! very very exciting.

BUT. actions speak louder than words...here is a new video blog!

So we finally just made it to Andrew's aunt and uncles place where we are lucky enough to all be able to sleep on beds tonight.

There are more stars in the sky here in Rosthurn (Saskatchewan) than I have ever seen! We also tried to check out the aurora borealis, as I have never seen one growing up on the West Coast, but it was just a faint green glow on the horizon.  Still pretty cool.

We have been breaking in Miles, our drummer for the tour, pretty quickly, so things are going well.  He drove for the first time today on some little Saskatchewan back roads and did alright.  I am still not allowed to drive, due to some apparent danger that I may or may not cause to the passengers in the van.

So far all the shows have had amazing crowds, we have met amazing new friends and been able to visit almost all the old ones, (or sleep on their floors and couches!) We just have two shows left until we are at the WCMA's in Brandon, Manitoba, one in Regina tomorrow at the Exchange, and the other in Winnipeg at the Park Theater. Come if you can or tell your friends if you can't!

Here is the link to our latest video blog! short and sweet.  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kblToE4m29Q

We are currently sitting in the middle of Canada...well, what I consider to be relatively centered going east/west, in Altona, Manitoba.

I just posted the newest video blog, number four, here: http://laurasmith.tumblr.com

So far the tour has been fantastic! Thanks SO much to everyone who has come out to support us, put us up, and fed us, and to all our new fans who we have met along the way. CBC Radio 3 Track of the Day for May 25th, 2009: Laura Smith "Break"

posted by Tariq Hussain

A few weeks ago, a friend called me from a garage sale to tell me there was a banjo for sale.  Only forty bucks! The name on the headstock couldn't be deciphered so there was no way of knowing what brand it was but my friend said it looked okay from the perspective of someone who knew nothing about banjos.

If I could go back in time, that's the point where I should have said:  okay, buy it!!!  Forty bucks for a new instrument to experiment with is cheap.

Adding a new instrument to one's arsenal, even one you don't really know how to play, can open up some creative possibilities.  Take for example Vancouver songwriter Laura Smith's brush with the accordion.  According to her (pun intended) she can only play this one song on the accordion.  Actually, she had written Break before she even found her trusted instrument on Craigslist.

The opening chords are quite captivating in this song, sparse with just the vocal and a bit of tambourine.  The accordion sets and maintains the perfect melancholic tone in this delicate love song that speaks of cold streets and awkward steps.

By the way, I missed out on the banjo.  I tried riding my bike over there to view it myself, but it was gone by the time I arrived twenty minutes later.

It's been a while!

I just received two wicked CD reviews this week for 'sea of stars';

1. Spill Magazine review

2. Party In Kingston review

We are just getting ready, doing the things we do to get ready, for our first cross canada tour! woot woot.

MOSTLY we have been busy crafting and perfecting a BUNCH of new songs that we are super excited to share! Not to mention we are busy getting our newest playmate Johnny Andrews (of the Tegan and Sara band) up to speed.

I hope spring is being good to you.
