47,000 Kilometers Walked, 11.5 Million Trees Planted GREENING THE EARTH ONE STEP AT A TIME

Thursday, October 15, 2009

Recently I've met some very interesting people: In Tokyo I got the opportunity to speak on the same platform as Deepak Chopra,
founder of The New Alliance For Humanity who was simply incredible
and set the theme for the day, BE THE CHANGE.

Yumi Kikuchi Lights Up The Stage With Her Joyful Ministry of Peace Presentation.
When I arrived at the packed Tokyo event, I did not know that I was scheduled to speak,
and found myself following Deepak who introduced us to the meaning of space, the black stuff that we see the stars in,
and then Echan Deravy, who advanced the universal theme and our close friend Yumi Kikuchi
who spoke of the Ministry of Peace and her recent visit to Costa Rica,
who have signed on and created their own peace ministry.
By the time I got on stage my head was spinning with the immensity and mystery of the universe and I was so happy,
I had a hard time not bursting out laughing - it's was great to be among such conscious people, to talk about the deeper meaning of life
and how to utilise the invisible gifts that we all have.

For once Konomi did not have to translate, and later she appeared with us all on the BE THE CHANGE panel discussion.
Usually I am on stage and Konomi translates, it's not often that she gets to speak, and I was so enthralled by what she had to say
that I literally forgot what I had to say when the question came to me on the panel discussion - but all was well
and we made many new friends and got to advance the peaceful, action philosophy of Celebration Earth.
Over the last twenty years I have witnessed a great change in the environmental consciousness
that incorporates the spiritual into the saving of the planet.
Thanks heavens for that - before the environmental movement had a tendency to be scientific and spoke form the head before the heart.

With Konomi, Akiko and Koya San.
In the audience our good friends Akiko and Koya Yamakawa, a husband and wife team who have translated many of the worlds best spirtual books into Japanese.
They've just returned from a trip on the Peace Boat around Tierra del Fuego, not to far from where we now are in Patagonia.
Looking out at the beautiful lakes and mountains of the snow cappes Andes, Tokyo now seems a long, long, way away.

After months of preparation the South African Tour of the Wonderful World Tree Planting Festival has arrived in Johannesburg and at this very moment, 11.30am all
120 Japanese Volunteers are safely in the hotel lounge making their introductions.
After a long flight, it's a day of rest before a very busy seven days of tree planting and Food Garden building in several townships.

Thousands of trees are expected to be planted and at least three food gardens created to feed local communities and enhance immune systems
 in the struggle against AIDS.

One person I never lost contact with from my walk through South Africa seven years ago was Msinghati (MC) Nkonso of the Department of Water Affair and Forestry (DWAF). MC was assigned to look after me when I came through Eastern Cape Province. He did a great job and a lot of trees were planted along the way.

Thanks to MC and DWAF I planted a tree and left a stone on the grave of Steve Biko with his wife Ntsiki at the Steve Biko Memorial garden in the edge of King Williams Town. I'll never forget this and the over magical things that happened. Anyway, now I'm back in South Africa with Konomi, so we made a special journey to see MC in King Williams Town. MC's welcome was large and warm and he was very happy to meet Konomi. We had a lot to chat about and one evening we went with him to his homeland, a village in the nearby foothills. On the way the sun set and lit a full moon red moon rose through the huge African sky.
This is where he grew up and now nearing retirement he's building a new home away from the suburbs of his present life.
We had a great dinner. MC's wife cooked hake and potatoes and squash which was all very delicious. Everyone loved Konomi especially Granny who was overjoyed, and more than a little bit surprised, to find a Japanese lady in the house.
Granny was a laugh a minute and joked about us finding her a rich man from Japan who would court and marry her in style. I liked her. She reminded me of my mum.
In fact the whole family scene reminded of a typical family back in Manchester. Again was hit on the head just how alike we can be, even when we are continents and cultures apart. What a great family. The support of DWAF Minister Ronnie Kasrils and his department led to over twenty thousand trees planted before I left South Africa and their support and that of the national government continued as I made way through Zimbabwe and Zambia.

Last weekend we went on a journey to Bavians Kloof, with our friend, African Wilderness tour guide, Bruce Kietzman.
It was a three day trip that included several hundred kilometers through mountainous, forest, scrub and arid terrain,
a visit to a recently discovered Cave with Bushman wall paintings that are well over six thousand years old, and a
walk on the wild-side with Cheetahs at the Modgaji Reserve.
Our trip was one of pleasure and business; together with Bruce we intend next year to bring volunteers from Japan, to hike this spectacular region
to plant trees in a green corridor which include the 3800 hectare Modgaji Reserve.

Next year, the Modgaji Conservation and Rehabilitation Reserve will be expanded to 5000 hectares, enough land to support six Cheetahs as they are rehabilitated
into the wild, and needs more Acacia Trees to provide a better habitat for the animals on the reserve, especially the Giraffes, who nibble on their leaves.

The Modgaji Cheetahs have been orphaned or captive bred and have no experience in the wild, so Volunteers at the reserve have to play the role of parents,
teaching the animals to hunt. This means walks every day for the Cheetahs and to help cover this cost, visitors are encouraged to donate for this walking activity.

With several volunteers we set off into the bush with two Cheetahs and for the next two hours joined them on their hunt for food.
It was not too hot, so the hike was very pleasant, and the scenery was vast. The Cheetahs were led to hill tops
with commanding views where they sit, looking for lunch. Its a quintessential African scene, a big cat, beneath an Acacia Tree, scanning the surrounds, hungry, alert.
These Cheetahs have to be taught these simple things that will help them to survive in the wild. This day only distant Springboks, Kudo,
and various small deers could be seen, but they were far away, so the Cheetahs were led through the bush until they hunted down
a small deer known as a Daika, which they were not allowed to eat on the spot, as it is next to impossible to bring them back to their pen after a big meal.
No telephoto lens needed for this close up picture
It was a surprisingly relaxing day. The pace was calm, the experience magical and the only sounds were the sounds of nature.
Walking with Cheetahs, what a thrill! One time, we sat ten meters from a Cheetah and his observation post, when he turned
and looked directly at me, and then walked surely exactly to where I sat. He came so close that he literally stepped over my feet.
Konomi thought this close encounter was the most memorable part of the day – me too.
On the way back to the very nice accommodation the Modgaji owners had provided freely for our stay,
Konomi was overjoyed to see a small herd of Giraffe, silhouetted on the crest of a hill, munching Acacia Trees.

Konomi crosses the bridge that leads to our second piece of land in Patagonia, Chile.

The river is fed by four glaciers and is full of trout and salmon. The water is ever blue and you can just dip your head into it and drink.

We have four wonderful hectares in this valley and the river is the southern boundary of the land. There are only six families in the huge magnificent hidden valley and one of them is selling 530 hectares of the valley that leads all the way up to the Glaciers. This includes ancient untouched forest, a lake and the numerous waterfalls, rivers and steams that fill it. It is our dream to form a foundation to protect this important eco-system.

In October 2009, after Celebration Earth, we return to this natural paradise to build our home. Our home will be a showcase for environmental protection and sustainability, a place where people can learn alternative ways of construction and energy production not harmful to the natural environment we all need to exist.

We will build our home with interested friends and supporters from Japan and elsewhere and record the whole process in DVD, for educational purposes. People who assist us in the building of our home, will be a part of something new and will gain from the experience.

Please contact us soon if your are interested in joining our project. The deal is simple. You make your way to Chile and we will take care of you whole your on our land. Including food, shelter, warmth and much happiness.

Cowboys still exist and we saw a whole buch of them at the annual la Junta Rodeo in Patagonoia, chile.
La Junta is where are building our home and it was a big event for the whole populace (2500) and thankfully the sun shone.
People still come to town on horse to do their shopping,
we know at least on school teacher who rides to work everyday.
La Junta and the entire of Chilean Patagonia is in a time warp and its fantastic.
We don't eat meat, but if we did there would be no topping the cattle here.
Everything is free range - more Cows than trucks. Vegetables are all organic, so are the fruits - people here don't know,
or want to know how to use pesticides.

VOLCAN MELIMOYO

For just $50 we booked a cabin on the Don Baldo Ferry and sailed
from the small port of Quellon on the island of Chiloe
to the even smaller Puerto Cisnes in Patagonia, Chile.
It was a spectacular voyage of twenty hours with vistas of islands, mountains, volcanoes,
ever blue seas with Dolphins splashing here and there, Penguins and Seals lazing around rocks.

This has got to be the best value cruise in the world
and was a great way for us to arrive in the land where we will build our home.

It was great to see Yuji on Korean TV with the Celebration Earth Flag.
Before he began his walk we took this picture of newly created flags.
I show the flag here again to remind us that peace, like humanity and nature comes in many colours.
Our independence and our interdependence create a whole.
Yuji's walk is showing how people of different nations can stand together as one.

The Celebration Earth Executive Committee eagerly awaits his arrival in Okinawa for the next section of his walk,
which will begin on February 15th and end on April 1st
at the official opening of Celebration Earth events
at the Earth Garden, in Naha the capital of Okinawa.
