One man's crusade to make money doing something he loves... aka Team Hell's Blog

Our mega half-price sale is practically killing us here at Team Hell. We are packing orders around the clock more or less, but its all in a good cause since loads of you have been in touch this week to comment on our super-fast service and we like hearing from satisifed customers. But the warehouse is looking fairly sparse again so the sale will be ending at the after May Day weekend - get in there quick.

We've had new stock in for Lost and Affliction this week too and are so excited about these new lines. Opening the parcels has been like Christmas come early - there are some really fantastic designs and they are up on the site now so check them out at www.TeamHellUK.com.

Stew enjoyed the UFC at the weekend so much he is now threatening to go to the one at Belfast, but ahead of that there is a superglam Gumball Rally party he is trying to get a passout off me for, not sure if me and the babe can cope without him that weekend though  not with all the orders you lot have been putting in lately!

If the Ocean Gets Rough

Saturday, April 21, 2007

Our local PO decided this week to start shutting up at 11am of a Saturday morning so we got to work at 7am this morning to get all the orders out in time for the last post - now that's commitment! We got ourselves out to the warehouse only to find a mouse has decided to make Team Hell its home and has eaten its way through an entire Heartcore line. We are now faced with a moral dilemma. I am a vegetarian, have been since I was 8 years old – that's going on 20 years now. Stew doesn't eat a huge array of animals on account of not being able to face the thought of it, although that list excludes cows and chickens which he eats by the truckload. So what do we do? We can get some mouse poison and save the Heartcore tees or we can suffer the consequences and keep the mouse. It's a tough call.

Fortunately the mouse has had a stay of execution anyhow since Stew has gone to watch the UFC fight in Manchester tonight. £100 to watch grown men fight it out in a cage seems a little excessive to me, and a bit brutal but he's pretty much hooked. It does mean I'm on nappies all night but I haven't told him I'm going away in July with some uni mates yet and he's on nappies for a whole weekend, so I think that pretty much evens things out. Not sure the mouse is going to make it to Monday morning though, poor mouse.

Takk...

Friday, April 20, 2007

In our latest efforts at reaching the people we headed off to Manchester to do some flyering at a couple of gigs. I'm pretty damn good at flyering. Standing there with bits of paper hoping that someone will feel like taking one off you is a miserable approach and not good for the environment either since all the paper ends up on the floor seconds later. So we take big bags full of stickers out with us and force them on people in the queues waiting outside venues. Most people can't resist a sticker and even if they stick it to their mates forehead it's still 2 seconds of precious marketing!

So there I am - 27 years old with sheepish looking husband in tow making use of my insane ability to talk non-stop with very little breathing time and I've worked my way down half the queue forcing stickers on people when I hear, "MISSSSS, IT'S MISSSS. LOOK IT'S MISS EVERYONE!" And there in the queue are 8 of my Year 10s screaming with excitement at having their teacher giving them flyers and on a school night too. And it's all I can do to avoid dying on the spot. So we're only flyering venues outside a 50 mile radius now since it's pretty hard to maintain your professional image when being accompanied by members of your high school Science class to a gig. It was a damn good concert though and has inspired us to the take the little one to her first festival at Minehead for All Tomorrows Parties vs the fans. She'll be 5 months old and the line up is fairly chilled so should be a good one. And we might even brave some more flyering since it's 250 miles away from home.

Current mood:  mellow

Things have been going pretty crazy here this week with the orders for sale stock coming in thick and fast. We've had to draft in extra staff to help with packing and getting stuff sent out. We very rarely have an order that isn't shipped out within 24 hours and we take pride in getting customers their stuff quickly so we've been packing stuff round the clock and keeping our local PO in business.

We've got the new Rockett stock coming in next week too - so more exciting new lines will be added to the site to tempt the old tastebuds. At Team Hell HQ the lightning damage is pretty much fixed now although we still have to have some electrical work done. We got new carpets this week and freshly painted walls which we're pretty gutted about since we had got so used to being slobs during the building work and now we have to tidy the place up. But our loss is your gain as always since we have added loads more stock to the sale for the last week of our spring clearout so go get yoursleves a bargain. Laters.

If you want regular product news go to: Team Hell news page

Things are changing here at Team Hell and to explain why I thought I'd explain how it all started. "Team Hell" used to be what my husband and I called ourselves when we first met. We gave ourselves that name since when something came up that neither of us wanted to do one of us would end up saying, "Come on, we're a team", as if to mean we'll get it done together and the other one would say "Yeah, team hell." Well it stuck and we were Team Hell, and when we got a little puppy boxer dog he joined Team Hell too.

Stew left uni without finishing his computing degree about six years ago; he thought he liked computers after being pretty much addicted to the fledgling internet as a teenager. Truth was he hated computers, so he packed in the C++ and spent six months enjoying a haze of ex-student life that consisted of all the benefits of being at uni, without any lectures. Soon enough though his cash dried up and he had to get himself a job. We wrote a list of things he wouldn't mind doing and he ended up getting a part-time job at a dog kennels clearing up dog poo. He got paid £50 a week which was pretty much what it cost him to get there but I was still a student and life was relatively cheap so it didn' t really matter. Trouble was I finished uni and trained as a teacher and had to move to start my first post which meant Stew left the kennels behind. His Dad offered him some money to start a business and since we both loved dogs we decided to give our own kennels a go. We didn't get the planning permission we needed though and were pretty gutted. So we wheeled out the old list of things Stew could do and by that stage there were only 3 options left: start an online clothing store, open a record shop or become a landscape gardener. In those days Napster was king so the record shop was pretty much out and for a long time it looked like he was destined to become a gardener since everyone we asked for advice said the online store was too risky. In the end after some serious soul-searching he went with his heart and Team Hell was born. We gave the business our name, and stopped using it for ourselves, we've only ever had one complaint about the 'Hell' part of the title, but that's another story.

Three years on and Team Hell is still going strong. We take pride in providing our customers with top quality clothing at the fairest prices we can manage and we go out of our way to ensure we are up there with the best when it comes to customer service. Stew loves running Team Hell, and we both get excited about seeing the new lines come in and trying to make the business a success. We've met some great people along the way too and some of them have become good friends.

But like everything in life, things change and at Christmas we had a little girl who is chatting away to me in babble talk right now. Babies take up time and cost money and despite you thinking otherwise beforehand, they do change your life. Well this one has caused us to take a leap into the unknown; I've given up my job to look after her and help out with Team Hell so we are for the first time solely dependent on the business for our income. We had to find ourselves a way to take a regular salary from Team Hell so our advertising budget has bit the dust and it is goodbye to the music monthlies as of the next few months. This means I've got myself a new job, advertising for Team Hell without spending any money. I'm going to blog my efforts here and our efforts to make money without compromising our ethics whilst still providing our customers with a great service. Wish me luck.

Saturday, April 14, 2007
I would love to know what it takes to be able to post on forums and feel the love. Forums hate me, but people keep telling us that they are a great way to advertise. So last night after a couple of glasses of wine I thought I'd give it a whirl. I searched to see if we'd ever got a mention and sure enough there we were in the livingwithstyle.com 'World of Emo' forum. So I signed up and checked it out and found on there a list of places to buy clothing that they'd put together. I didn't think it was an unreasonable request to ask them to add us to it but I just don't have whatever the secret ingredient of forum kudos is. I got shot down in flames. We don't sell emo clothing apparently and it is all too big anyhow. I declined to lower myself to the old addage "I was there when it all began... how many (insert name of chosen emo band) concerts had you been to pre-2000?" and I also narrowly avoided coming back to them with a list of stock items currently available in youth sizes and XS. So I walked away with my e-dignity relatively intact, but still not a clue on how to reach the people without spending money.

Current mood:  giddy

It's been one hell of a week at Team Hell HQ - we have had the site up, then back down, then up again (this time for good) after some pain in the ass problems with our domain name providers. And just when we thought we had finally seen the back of the builders fixing our lightning damage they decided to stay another week - .

But since we couldn't do much on the site over the weekend we had a mad clearout in the warehouse ready for all of the simply amazing new stock that is coming in over the next few weeks ready for a long, hot summer. That means we've got loads of stuff that is now without a home, so we are practically giving it away! We've got t-shirts from £2.50, polos from a cool fiver and you can get yourself a hoody and have change from a tenner. We've also reduced loads of shoes, jeans and hats to silly prices. And since we're in the spring mood we are keeping all of our old lines in the sale until the end of April. Now that's an offer you've got to get yourself part of.

Check it all out at Team Hell - www.TeamHellUK.com

Have fun!

Stewart
