April 27, 2009 - Monday

Hellooo WSSA-ers!!

Thanks for making Spring 2009 an event-filled, fun, friendly, feminist semester!!  We hope everyone made it out to at least one of our events!  If not, there is always next semester!   Since 5 of our 6 current board members are graduating this May, we are definitely looking for new members and board members.  This would be a great opportunity for anyone interested in learning about leadership and seeing what non-hierarchical feminist organizing looks like!  Please see our CSULB website for our tentative board for Fall 2009.   Also on the site are some pictures from this years events!

Our LAST MEETING of this semester will take place THIS Tuesday, April 28 at the Multicultural Center (FO3-2).  In lieu of having a business-like meeting, we decided instead to have a potluck and watch MEAN GIRLS!  Doors open at 12 noon, film screening starts at 12:30pm!  Please bring savory snacks!

Hip Hop: Beyond Beats and Rhymes film screening was awesome!

Check the article! http://www.daily49er.com/news/gender-roles-in-hip-hop-music-1.1724115

LGBT Diversity Week rocked!

Check the article! http://www.daily49er.com/news/lgbt-diversity-week-panelists-discuss-racism-and-discrimination-1.1712669

The Vagina Monologues was a big hit!  Thanks to everyone who came out!  It was taped and will be available for purchase at our Graduation Party at the Soroptomist House (more info below).  If you would like to purchase a DVD please let us know so we can make you one.  Price TBA.

SACA Speak out was a success!

Thanks to all who came out!  And farewell to Ashleigh and Hilda from SACA who are both moving on from their positions-you 2 will be missed!

WSSA will be honored by the President’s Commission on the Status of Women

Dr. Reed nominated us (WSSA) for an award through The President's Commission on the Status of Women (http://www.csulb.edu/org/women/).  The PCSW informed her that the awards are meant for single students rather than groups, but that they were so impressed with us that they are CREATING an award just to give us!   They will be presenting it to us at the PCSW Women’s Research Colloquium which is Wednesday, April 29, 2009 at  The Pointe- in the Pyramid from  5:00pm-7:30pm.     Yay!

FORCE'S TAKE BACK THE NIGHT!

F.O.R.C.E. presents Take Back the Night, an event in global solidarity to protest and raise awareness about sexual violence. The night will consist of speakers, a march, music, candlelight vigil, and a speak-out facilitated by the Sexual Assault Crisis Agency. It is an opportunity to raise the voices of those who have been silenced by victimization, and a chance for men and women to reclaim our dignity and sexuality through awareness and empowerment. Contact: force4change@yahoo.com.  This event is also an homage to Kate Sue Yi, the CSULB nursing student who was (allegedly) murdered by her boyfriend three weeks ago in an apartment she shared with another nursing student on Bellflower. She was strangled and her boyfriend is in custody.

Also, she would like us to expand more on our group (WSSA) and what it is that we do.

SACA Speak Out!

-         Friday, April 24 from 5 - 9 p.m. @ Soroptomist House (Alaina)

-         This is one of SACA (Sexual Assault Crisis Agency)’s biggest events!

-         Survivor-centered event that allows a much-needed space for survivors of sexual assault to talk about their experiences/feelings in a caring environment. Loved ones are certainly welcomed, but the talking space is reserved for survivors.

Take Back the Night

- Thursday, April 30 from 7 - 10:00 p.m. @ Maxson Plaza, then walk over to Soroptomist House (Audrey)

-         Organized by FORCE. - What exactly is Take Back the Night?

-         Take back the night is a response to the idea that women need to stay indoors at night “for their protection”. This event rejects this idea of punishing and confining women for crimes committed against them—namely by the hands of men. Women have the right to occupy public spaces at all hours of the day, just as men do. This event is significant as it begins with a rally, and then students and community members cause a stir as they walk through campus by candle-light and then a survivor-speak out begins.

that dream didn't quite work out.

Sam,
unable to land a publishing job, returned to the supermarket where
she'd worked as a checkout girl during her time as a student, using her
part-time wages to help finance her education. The job was difficult on many levels:
"There are a lot of health problems in this job - tendonitis, lumbago,
that sort of thing," Sam says, "There is a lot of depression as well
because you're completely ignored by everyone: by your managers and by
the customers. After a while you become convinced that you're less than
nothing."
Sam was faced with nasty customers on a daily basis, who treated her
poorly due to her position. Upon greeting families at her register, Sam
recalls, parents would warn their children, "If you don't work hard at
school, you'll end up like that lady," apparently unaware that Sam was,
indeed, an excellent student who simply chose to work the job because
it was the only one available. "There are an awful lot of people like
me," Sam says, "They have studied hard, got a degree and found that it
leads to the jobs no one wants."
Sam decided to give a voice to checkout girls by sharing her experiences on a blog, which has since received over one million visits and spawned a book, Les Tribulations d'une Caissière (The Tribulations of a Checkout Girl), which has sold 100,000 copies in France. A film version, musical, and even a comic strip are also in the works.
As someone who also worked as a checkout girl for a year to earn
tuition money, I sympathize with Sam's story and applaud her efforts to
bring public attention to the way people treat those who work at
supermarkets. I worked in a small, craptacular supermarket outside of
Boston during my senior year, putting in nights and weekends in an
itchy polyester apron and scanning cans and boxes along a slightly
dirty conveyor belt. It was one of the best jobs I've ever had, in
terms of giving me a better insight into human nature; people
consistently treated me like I was stupid, talking very slowly and
loudly as if I couldn't understand what they were saying. They took out
their frustrations on me, and I left every night feeling like a
complete piece of crap, sniffed at and sneered upon by people who
apparently felt like they had the right to yell at me because their
cereal wasn't on sale this week, as it had been two weeks prior.
There are many difficult aspects to being a checkout girl that
people probably don't realize; there is a lot of loneliness, stress,
sadness, and frustration that comes through the lines, such as seeing
an elderly man pay for 15 frozen .50 burritos with handfuls of warm
change; having to tell a young mother with three sweet-faced children
that WIC doesn't cover a specific cereal or type of juice and seeing
her face fall as she realizes she has to put things back, and watching
people wince as the totals add up on the computer screen. You can feel
the stress of your customers; you get a sense of who they are by the
items they continually buy, you can tell when your regulars are
struggling when their orders go down or when they begin to switch from
fancy brands to generics.
There were times when I felt compelled to mention that I was saving
up for grad school, as if I had to make it known that I was better than
this stupid job, but that always made me feel worse; the job wasn't
stupid at all, my attitude towards it was, and was just as bad as those
who were judging me from the other side of the aisle. After a while I
just realized that the job was a stepping stone in where I wanted to
go; the money would be put to good use and was worth the effort. And
the lessons I learned there will stay with me longer than any I picked
up in school. Kindness goes a very long way.
Sam hopes her success will open people's eyes to the way they treat
checkout workers: "I'd like to think that I could help to change the
way people look at checkout workers," she says, "It would be a start if
they were just a little more polite to them." It would indeed.

Are we not men: why male feminism rocks!

Posted By: Neil Durkin at Mar 8, 2009 at 17:41:51

Isn't International Women's Day a dreadful feel-good gesture for right-on feminists always looking for an excuse to promote wimmins' ishoos?
Er, actually, no. To this male-feminist blogger's way of seeing
things, women's day is still important and it's not just "about" or
"for" women" either.
Okay, having a "day" to recognise anything - World Water Day, World
Aids Day, Victims Of Torture Day - initially smacks of tokenism. If we
did nothing about these issues except a bit of promotion once a year
they would, quite obviously, be a shallow bit of nonsense.
As it is, days are only semi-official milestones in the calendar,
prompting a moment for reflection and assessment. They're not an excuse
for doing nothing the rest of the year. Setting aside a Remembrance
Sunday in November to mark the sacrifices of soldiers in world wars is
likewise important, but we shouldn't stop dealing with the task of
looking after our servicemen and women meanwhile.
So, why a day for women? Well, we don't have to look further than a
few key statistics. A lot of it - especially from my perspective at
Amnesty - is about combating violence against women.
In the UK a staggering one woman in every 10 suffers rape or other
gender-based violence every year. Domestic violence, for example, is a
huge, behind-closed-doors menace - there's a call to the emergency
services every 60 seconds from a woman being attacked or threatened by
a present or estranged partner. And meanwhile, there's stalking, sexual
harassment, "honour" killings, a tawdry array of sexual assaults ...
The services, though, are just not there. Recent research has revealed that three-quarters of local authorities in Britain simply don't have any specialised sexual violence services.
To me this is just not acceptable. And it shouldn't be left to women
to bang on about this. After all, as a man it's my mother, my sister,
my aunt, my workmates and friends that could be on the receiving end of
a beating from that bloke I never really liked that time I met him in
the pub.
What's interesting is how incredibly unfashionable it is for men to
talk about these issues. The 1950s "hard man" culture is definitely
still with is, albeit now toned down and given a dose of Noughties-era
irony about anything "worthy" like feminism or "women's issues". (In
fact, it's now almost a social taboo in some circles - male and female
- to mention the F-word: feminism. The past-all-that attitude of "oh, I
don't like to call myself a feminist, it sounds so angry" has gained an
awful lot of traction.)
But as men we don't have to do anything as clichéd as getting in
touch with our feminine side. Standing up for women (with women) when
it comes to demanding basic services and challenging idiotic hard-man
attitudes is simply a matter of intelligence and equality. A few years
ago in Bangladesh, 5,000 men marched against acid attacks (typically
attacks on young women who've rejected sexual advances or marriage
proposals), and men have recently joined the excellent Campaign For Equality in Ahmadinejad's repressive, anti-women Iran.
So let's cut back on the cynicism and support International Women's
Day. And let's support equal rights and a safer world for women. After
all, are we not men?

TODAY THE DAILY 49ER HAD AN INSERT IN THEIR PAPER WITH GRUESOME PHOTOGRAPHS OF AN ABORTION WITH NO WORDS ON IT AT ALL EXPLAINING IT. THIS WAS NOT AN ADVERTISEMENT, IT WAS PROPAGANDA PLEASE JOIN WSSA IN GIRLCOTTING THIS PAPER UNTIL AN APOLOGY IS GIVEN.

THE LETTER FROM THE EDITOR :
Updated: Monday, February 9, 2009

To our readers:

In today's issue of the Daily Forty-Niner, a full-color insert was run on the topic of abortion. I want to make it clear that this insert is a paid advertisement and in no way reflects the views or opinions of the Daily Forty-Niner and its staff. Regrettably the insert did not clearly state that it is an advertisement. We will run disclaimers all week so that it will be clear.. that the inser..t is an adver..tisem..ent. I apologize for any confusion.  If you have any furth..er comme..nts or questions,.. please e-mail me at eicd49er@gmail.com or call me at 562-985-7998. If you leave a message, I will return your call as soon as possible.

Thank you for your readership,

Colleen Donnelly

Editor in Chief

THE LETTER TO THE EDITOR FROM A BOARD MEMBER:

Dear Colleen Donnelly,Editor in Chief of the Daily Forty-Niner,
I
am a senior women's studies major and board member of the Women's
Studies Student Association (WSSA) here at CSULB.  I wanted to express
my extreme disappointment at the completely irresponsible allowance on
your part to "advertise" a very grotesque and overtly insensitive IDEA
in your paper today.  I am appalled.  My heart goes out to every woman
on campus today who has had to make the difficult choice to have an
abortion and had to be crudely reminded by a nameless anti-choice
organization when they opened open their papers today.
Until a FORMAL apology comes out expressing SPECIFICALLY that
allowing the "advertisement" was insensitive, anti-feminist, and
completely inappropriate, the WSSA will publicly renounce the Daily
Forty-Niner to potential readers.

Thank you for your consideration,
Marina WoodWSSA Board Memberhttp://www.csulb.edu/org/..college/wssa/

ANOTHER LETTER FROM A BOARD MEMBER:

Regarding your statement on your website about the abortion flyer, this
was not an advertisement of any kind as it didn't say anything! It was
clearly just an anti-choice piece of propaganda showing gory images
without any information. Also, how can this be an advertisement if it
doesn't say who paid for it? There is no name on so it's not
advertising ANYTHING. Putting this in your paper was irresponsible,
inappropriate and ridiculous. I'm very disgusted by your choice to run
this  piece of disinformation and you should be embarrassed for trying
to hide behind your decision by calling it an ad. when it's clearly
just an attempt at brainwashing us. I am HORRIFIED.

First-Person Stories of Masturbation
First-Person Stories of Masturbation

From clitoris.com

Kim

I am twenty and have been masturbating since I was about 9 when I put my mom's back massager 'down there' and it felt so good. Except if I held it there too long I¿d have to pee. So when I could get some private time I would put a towel on the floor take off my panties and sat there until I couldn't
take it anymore and would pee, I don't know if I was having an orgasm then or not. Eventually I
gained enough control that I could use the vibrator to cum without having too pee. I also got really
horny when I have to pee really badly, so that took some practice. For the longest time the only way
I could successfully masturbate was to lay on my back with the back massager between my legs. One
night I was so horny that I couldn't wait until there was no one around to hear the vibrator so I
decided to try humping my pillow--it took a long long time, but I finally came. I realized I needed to
find a new method that worked before I went to college though. And found that if I balled up a
blanket on my bed, and humped it I could cum really easily. All it takes is muscle tension and
something rubbing my clit for me to come. And I have gotten so good at knowing my own body that
I can come within a couple minutes. What's great about my methods is that I can stay completely
dressed. In college I wanted to try new things for fun. I masturbated at night with my roommate in
the room, one time I masturbated with the door open to the hall and someone could have walked by
and caught me at any second. I am horny all the time, and usually get myself off at least once a day.
I find oftentimes when I am bored, like in class, I start to get really horny. One day recently there
was this really hot chick sitting in front of me and she was wearing a thong, and her pants were way
down low and I could see her ass. I sat there and got more and more horny, and my panties were
becoming soaked. Normally I would go home right after class and get off, but this time I didn't think I
could wait. So during a short break in class, I went into the little bathroom with one stall, waiting my
turn to use the toilet, while I was waiting, I discreetly rubbed my crotch on the corner of the sink, and when I got in the stall, I learned up against the wall, I frantically stuck my hand down my pants and
started rubbing my clit. I fantasized about the girl in my class and I started breathing really hard and
let out a couple little moans. I was so paranoid someone was going to figure out what I was doing,
but I really needed to cum, and fast, so I tried to focus all my attention. I grabbed the handicapped
bar in one hand and continued to rub myself hard. All of a sudden I came. It was the first time I had
had an orgasm standing up, and my legs almost gave out beneath me. It was sooo great to try
something new like that. Now when I get horny I masturbate in the bathroom at work and other
places and it is so nice.

Anonymous

I am a 14 yr old girl--I don't want to say my name. I masturbated when I was 9 or 10 to the point of
orgasm, until my parents made me take Prozac (for unrelated reasons, of course). I have not had an
orgasm once--I try about once a week. It was really bothering me, so I told my mom I think the
Prozac had an effect on me sexually--of course she wanted to know if I masturbated, and I denied it.
She has always made me feel guilty about sexual things, a. because she is a Christian and b. because I
am her only child, and she expects me to 'perfect'. Masturbation to her is as bad as premarital sex.
Anyway, thanks for letting me vent. It is very frustrating when you feel like half a person because
your sexuality is not there. I wish I knew how to get it back.

I would hope that parents are more aware and supportive of their daughter's sexuality than the
mother in this situation. If your child is taking medication it is wise to be aware of all the possible side effects and to take into account their sexuality. In this instance, while the Prozac may have treated
one problem, is obviously created another that is having a very negative affect on her emotionally.

Velvet

Hi. My name is "Velvet" and I¿m 20 yrs old. I started masturbating when I was 13, or younger. Most
of the time I use a Q-Tip (Yep, those cotton things for you ears) Before I do, I imagine I am being
kissed "down there," By an actor. If anyone has ever watched a TV show called Forever Knight
about a vampire cop, Played by a very handsome Welsh actor named Geraint Wyn Davies. Though
in my fantasies, he is his vampire self. I start to visualize he is kissing me, sucking on my clit, and
then draws blood, still sucking. Gets me wet almost right away :)

Another thing I do is roll up a couple towels and ride them till I cum. I have very intense orgasms,
quivering so much I shake all over. I do this late at night, with the lights off in my room, a couple of
candles lit. Though I stifle my moans by biting my bottom lip. I can cum real hard most of the time. I
also slide a finger into myself and move it back and forth till I almost cum, and then I play with my
clit until I let go.

Anonymous

I¿m 15 and I¿ve been masturbating for like 3 years. Anyway, I masturbate by either setting the
removable showerhead to jet and putting it to my clit and I sit with it there and have the most
amazing orgasm or the other way is with a back massager, I rest one part on my ass, the other on my
clit. It¿s wonderful! Whenever I do this, I think about being tied down two my bed and blindfolded.
Then I imagine a friend or just another girl eating me out over and over till I cum like 10 times. Even
though I can¿t really cum more than once on my own will, it¿s my fantasy to have that happen.
Anyway, I also like to cyber with other girls because they understand my needs. Anyway thanks for
reading.

Vanessa

Hey the vacuum worked. It made me have an orgasm real quick. This site has helped me to give
myself pleasure. When I used the vacuum I experienced my erected clitoris, which was surprising to
me. I didn't know that your clit could be erected. The vacuum does get cold though so you have to
stop at times. But that is a good thing because if your orgasm goes to long it's not good for you. I
believe that masturbation is a very good thing to do. This page is a very good and helpful site.

She is using the hose on a vacuum cleaner, and placing the open end of the hose around her clitoris. I
presume cool air is rushing in through the holes in the end of the hose that prevent too much suction
from developing; a safety feature in vacuum hoses. I do not recommend this technique as there is a
risk of injury.

Cara

I'm 18 years old and I've been masturbating since I was 10. Even though I've been masturbating for
as long as I have I didn't achieve an orgasm until I was 17 - I didn't even deliver it. My boyfriend was
actually the one who gave me my first orgasm (manually). I was really kind of embarrassed about it,
but it was better that I finally came... one way or another. Since then I regularly reach orgasm by
myself. My problem was that my mental state and technique was all wrong.

As you can imagine, trying to orgasm for 7 years and getting nothing was very frustrating. I figured
that something was wrong with ME... so I would go online and read up on it. I read on several sites
that not achieving orgasm was totally normal and that only 50% of women achieve... so I lost hope
and just stopped masturbating. This is where my boyfriend came in. Just by playing with my clit by
hand he gave me a blindingly powerful orgasm. Afterwards we talked and he shared a lot of
information with me. He masturbates regularly and achieves multiple orgasms so I figured that I
couldn't go wrong with his advice. He told me what he did for me and how to concentrate when I
masturbate... all kinds of stuff. When I went home I tried it out and it worked like a charm. It
actually kind of made me mad that it was there all along but I just wasn't doing things right.

So to pass on the favor... for all of you girls that are like I once was... 1) Get yourself really turned
on first... think about what turns you on and fantasize about it... and STAY FOCUSED. For me, my
biggest turn on is going down on my boyfriend. I love it... I'm good at it... and thinking about what he
does, his facial expressions, everything during, before, and after his orgasm totally gets me going. So
when I want to reach orgasm I think about that. My problem was that I was going into it cold (not
turned on) and doing that made touching my clit irritating... so I ignored it. That made me try to
orgasm vaginally - which I don't think I can do. 2) Focus on your clit... if nothing else. After I had
my own manual orgasm I realized that, at least for me, focusing on my clit was all I had to do. No
rubbing anywhere else, no tools... just clit. BONUS) I've found that for stronger orgasms it helps to
have strong PC muscles and to somewhat flex your legs. Having strong PC's increases sensation and
makes the vaginal contractions stronger... flexing my legs makes my muscles tighter... so it magnifies
the orgasm a little bit more.

This is what works for me and it might not apply to everyone but I hope this helps somebody else.
Also, I love your site... it seems very comprehensive.

I seem to come across a lot of information on how men can delay orgasm, but I haven't seen
anything for women on that same subject, so I thought I'd add my technique here. It's similar to the
squeeze technique for men. When I masturbate, I use two fingers to rub my clitoris in a circular
motion. If I feel an orgasm coming on but I want to last longer, I press down firmly on my clitoris
and breathe slowly and deeply until the urge to have an orgasm passes. I can then continue to
masturbate and repeat that technique until I feel ready to have my orgasm. I don't often have multiple
orgasms, so I find this helpful when I want to last longer.
