DIRECTED BY Roel Reine STARRING Ted DiBiase Jr. - Joe Linwood Michael Rooker - Church Lara Cox - Robin Linwood Robert Coleby - Conner Temuera Morrison - Damo
Genre - Action
Running Time - 95 Minutes
Score - 2 Howls Outta 4 PLOT A marine on temporary leave, Joe Linwood ( Ted DiBiase Jr.) wants to return home to be with his wife, Robin ( Lara Cox). Unfortunately, Robin's boss ( Robert Coleby) is opening some environmental friendly resort in Southeast Asia and she has to go to make sure his dumbass doesn't ruin his image. This means Joe has to go with Robin to this resort. Beautiful beaches, a romantic setting, and free food - how terrible! Anyway, some terrorists decide to crash the party and take everyone hostage, wanting a tribute that would pay for the crimes against their people. Joe, the only one who wasn't captured, gets help from a former Army soldier ( Michael Rooker) to save his wife and the rest of the hostages. Well it's better than jobbing to Triple H again!
REVIEW
STORY
I remember almost hearing about this sequel and just laughing at how absurd it sounded. Why anyone would want to make a sequel to one of the worst films of 2006, THE MARINE starring John Cena, was beyond me. But then again, THE MARINE is still the highest grossing WWE Studios film, so obviously Vince McMahon wanted to capitalize on that. What made things even stranger was that Cena was no longer involved, instead being replaced by Ted DiBiase Jr., the son of "The Million Dollar Man" Ted DiBiase. I have nothing at all against Ted Jr. I actually like the guy, as he brings his work boots everytime he wrestles and is poised to be one of the bigger stars in the future of the WWE. But the guy is a heel [ or bad guy] at the moment and making him the hero of an action film just seemed like weird marketing. Still, I took a chance on this film - and you know what? It wasn't that bad. I'm not saying THE MARINE 2 is a great film. It's not even a good film. But it's decent and it's a hell of a lot better than that Cena debacle in the original. The story is pretty much your generic action film. It takes elements from DIE HARD, RAMBO, and any other 80s action film that was really popular at the time. Hell, it even rips off THE MARINE, as the hero has to [ once again] save his wife from evil-doers. What does the WWE have with men saving their wives from danger? THE MARINE? 12 ROUNDS? THE MARINE 2? Three strikes you're out! Enough is enough with this sub-plot! But besides that, the story is a lot more focused and more grounded than in the first installment. The characters are a bit better developed, the villains actually have a reason for what they're doing, and the dialogue isn't totally repulsive. So kudos to WWE Studios for actually hiring writers who actually tried to make a film people would somewhat enjoy. Now if they would do that with their current wrestling product, especially on RAW, I would be a happy man! And supposedly, this film is based on true events. What events those would be, I have no idea. If someone knows, let me know. DIRECTION Roel Reine actually did a very nice job on THE MARINE 2. There was some style h ere [ beautiful angles and nice camera movements and transitions] and the editing was really well done. I even thought the pacing wasn't too shabby. I wish the action scenes were more exciting to watch, but I wasn't bored. There was one action sequence where the camera rotated around the entire choregraphy of the fight scene, which I thought was very cool. And I must say that the cinematography for this film was really striking and beautiful. For a low budget direct-to-DVD film, it looked anything but. The visuals really impressed me.
VIOLENCE/SEX/LANGUAGE [aka THE GOOD STUFF] Well for an action film, it's not overly violent. Still, there is blood, explosions, shootings, stabbings, killing - standard action movie stuff. The language was pretty tame. I think the worst I heard were " asshole" and " shit", both said by DiBiase. And there's no sex at all besides a make out scene on the beach. For an R rated film, it almost felt PG. With the current WWE product, not surprising. ACTING While not Oscar-worthy in the slightest, I've seen worse. Ted DiBiase Jr. does okay in his first movie role. He's really wooden at times, but begins to loosen up towards the end of the film. He doesn't have many lines, honestly, but he does okay with them. The action scenes were really nice though, as he did his own stunts and showcased his athleticism. DiBiase doesn't have the presence or the charisma of John Cena but I didn't dislike him in the slightest. Michael Rooker, of HENRY: PORTRAIT OF A SERIAL KILLER, CLIFFHANGER, and SLITHER fame, is pretty much the best actor in the film. He's not in it quite a whole lot but his presence is definitely felt whenever he pops up. He should be in a better film to be honest, as he's a great underrated actor. But he doesn't half-ass it here and makes his character interesting just by being the Rook-Man. Lara Cox is hot as Robin. She's a decent actress to boot as well. And Tamuera Morrison as Damo was your generic villain-of-the-week actor/character. He did what he had to do and it worked for the most part. MUSIC Can't honestly remember what the music sounded like. I guess it was your typical action score. Nothing to write home about. THE FINAL HOWL THE MARINE 2 exceeded my expectations, which were none. But it's a step up from recent WWE films and it shows that McMahon is serious about his new venture. THE MARINE 2 makes for a decent rental if you have 90 minutes to fill, if you're a fan of action or Ted DiBiase Jr. ..

Shannon Elizabeth - Jill Metzner
F. William Parker - Paul Davrow
Eileen Seeley - Anne Tiler
Chip Heller - Joe Foster
Marsha Clark - Marla Genre - Horror/Slasher/X-Mas Running Time - 89 Minutes
Score - 3.5 Howls Outta 4 Am I the only one who feels like Christmas 2009 doesn't feel like Christmas? With the bad economy, lack of Christmas spirit from the people I'm surrounded by, and my current recovery of the very stressful Fall Semester, these holidays don't feel as happy as they should be. Not even the recent blizzard helped. So I did what I haven't done in a couple of months to try and get into the mood of things: watch a holiday-themed horror movie. And yes, I sat and watched JACK FROST. Again. For the fifth time. Don't look at me like that! Watching a snowman wet hump Shannon Elizabeth to death is the highlight of any winter! Hey, it beats watching that horrible Michael Keaton version. Yeesh, I rather drink anti-freeze before watching that drivel again. Snowmen should be killing people, not bonding with their kids. Happiness - Bah Humbug!

It should have been a better week for horror movie watching, but a whole bunch of crap was going on in my life and it wasn't the usual Halloween feeling I usually get this time of year because of it. That meant that my movie marathons didn't happen because of constant work from school, preparing for my short part time job, and finally getting my own XBox 360 which has been distracting me. Oh well. Maybe I'll do better next year. Might as well congratulate Kelsey now. Great job!
HALLOWEEN 5: REVENGE OF MICHAEL MYERS (1989) - One of the worst installments in the franchise. Crappy Shape mask, overly obsessed and overacting Loomis, bad directing, bad soundtrack, bad Tina character [hate that bimbo]. The only saving grace is Danielle Harris' performance. Why did I watch this again? Because I'm a masochist. [0.5 Howls, 4 Points - Jamie Lloyd, 9, is The Shape's main target meaning she's being endangered]
HALLOWEEN: THE CURSE OF MICHAEL MYERS (1995) - This is the crappy theater version of the film. Slightly better than 5, but still a huge mess due to that Thorn storyline. The Producer's Cut is a whole lot better since it actually makes sense. Plus the ending is superior also. I wonder if Paul Rudd still puts this one on his resume. Probably not, even though he's quite good in this film. [1 Howl, 4 Points - Thorn wants to sacrifice Jamie's baby]
HALLOWEEN H20 (1998) - One of the better installments in the franchise, ignoring parts 3-6 and continuing from II by bringing by Jamie Lee Curtis. I think the last half hour is the best part of the film, since the movie feels too much like SCREAM for my tastes. Gotta love Michael's evolving masks though. [2.5 Howls, 2 Points]
HALLOWEEN RESURRECTION (2002) - Busta Rhymes. Tyra Banks. Reality show. Trick or treat, motherfucker. Do I need to say anymore? [0.5 Howls, 2 Points]
FRIDAY THE 13TH PART VI: JASON LIVES (1986) - My absolute favorite installment of the franchise. Comical, violent, and a kickass soundtrack by Alice Cooper. Probably the most self-aware film in the franchise and it works to its advantage. That paintball sequence still cracks me up. [3.5 Howls, 4 Points - Children at the camp are endangered by Jason's presence]
MY SUPER PSYCHO SWEET 16 (2009) - MTV's horror movie spinoff of their My Super Sweet 16 series. I wasn't expecting much out of this flick but it surprised me. It was actually pretty good. More gory than I was expecting. The dialogue was fine by me. And even the stereotypical characters were fun to watch. Who knew MTV could still entertain me? Obvious homages to CARRIE and PROM NIGHT are easy, yet fun to spot. Worth a rental when it's released on DVD. [3 Howls, 2 Points]
6 Films = 18 Points
If I wasn't currently writing a screenplay and TWO short stories at the same time, I would have done better. But it was fun when I was paying attention to the contest. Hopefully my chances will be a lot better next year if this is done again.

Horrible week when it came to movie viewing. Had my 1st act of my screenplay due, a short story due, and have a midterm this Tuesday. Add 5 hours of sleep every night and it's time for a break - or a nervous breakdown. Not sure which one will arrive first.
GRACE (2009) - Got this from Netflix about a pregnant woman who delivers a stillborn baby, who happens to be alive and hungry for blood. It was a good flick, but not a great one. The acting was really good though and the sub-plots were interesting. I kind of wish it went further with it though. But if you like IT'S ALIVE, you'll probably enjoy GRACE. [3 Howls, 6 points - the antagonist, Grace, is under a year old]
CANNIBAL HOLOCAUST (1980) - Watched this in my Horror Films class for the second time. Still a hard film to watch [that turtle scene makes me sick] but it's a great example of exploitation. Probably the best of the Cannibal flicks and a definitely experience for any horror fan who has yet to tackle this one. I will review this one in length one of these days when I have time. [4 Howls, 4 points - Children under 14 get shot or burnt in huts in certain sequences. Also, a pregnant woman is beaten.]
THE LAST HOUSE ON THE LEFT (1972) - Classic Wes Craven revenge flick starring David Hess as the memorable and sadistic Krug. I still think parts of it are really hokey [i.e. the bumbling cops and that music], but it's still an effective film. [3 Howls, 2 Points]
HALLOWEEN 4: THE RETURN OF MICHAEL MYERS (1988) - Probably the last great sequel in the original franchise that brought The Shape back after HALLOWEEN II (1981) and introduced the Jamie Lloyd storyline. While it has its flaws and really isn't all that scary, the acting is really good and the ending is one of my favorites [too bad the producers were too scared to follow it up]. It was also the first HALLOWEEN I saw in theaters [at a ripe old age of 7], so it brings a nostalgia factor. [3 Howls, 4 Points - A child under 14 is endangered]
PROM NIGHT (1980) - Classic slasher starring Jamie Lee Curtis as a high school student whose friends are being stalked by a killer who wants revenge over an unfortunate fatal accident when they were younger. Pretty slow and boring at times, extremely dated, and not scary at all - but it's still sort of fun to watch and make fun of. Also, the disco sequence is unforgettable. [2.5 Howls, 2 Points]
SOUTH PARK (2009) - "Dead Celebrities" - This is the episode where Ike sees dead celebrities and gets possessed by Michael Jackson so he can live out his final dream before moving on. I saw it for the first week for the contest but failed to add it. So I'm doing so now. [.5 Points]
5 Movies + 1 TV Show = 18.5 Points
For a really slow week, not bad. I hope this upcoming week will be a lot better. Good luck to everyone in the contest.

This week was a lot better when it came to horror movie watching although I've been really busy. I won't be anywhere near the lead but the second week score will be higher than the first:
HALLOWEEN (1978) - I didn't want to watch this one so early before Halloween, but my Horror Films class showed it this week for Slasher Week. It's definitive horror and pretty much the catalyst for the slasher sub-genre to come. It will always be my favorite movie of all time and the main reason why I love horror movies [and all movies in general]. [4 Howls, 4 points - Bad Baby Points for Michael Myers doing his first kill at age 6 and two children being endangered by The Shape towards the end]
HALLOWEEN II (1981) - Whenever I watch the original HALLOWEEN, the need to watch HALLOWEEN II is always there. Probably the best sequel in the franchise and the film I wish the franchise had ended on. But what can you do? Besides, that nurse and her big boobs always puts a smile on my face. [3 Howls, 2 Points]
A NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET (1984) - Wes Craven's masterpiece and the birth of a horror icon in Freddy Krueger. While it's a fantastic film, it's not my favorite in the franchise. But it's a definite highlight and a visually stunning film in the very unoriginal slasher sub-genre. [4 Howls, 2 Points]
A NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET PART 3: DREAM WARRIORS (1987) - My personal favorite in the NIGHTMARE franchise. It had up-and-coming actors who would do really well in their careers. It had special effects that kicked ass. And it expanded everything the original had presented. It's also the birth of the funnier Freddy Krueger. And the soundtrack by Dokken kicks ass. Totally awesome sequel. [4 Howls, 2 Points]
HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO ME (1981) - A good slasher flick starring Melissa Sue Anderson. It's cheesy, yet eerie. There's some cool deaths in this film. And the killer is pretty much a mystery until the very end. A highlight in the slasher genre, even if it is way too long. [3 Howls, 2 Points]
THE FOG (1980) - Probably one of John Carpenter's most underrated films. It's creepy. It's atmospheric. It has cool ghost pirates. And it has an all-star cast at the time. I know a lot of people find this film to be boring compared to Carpenter's other stuff, but I love it. [3 Howls, 4 Points - BBP for a child under 14 being endangered]
FRIDAY THE 13TH (1980) - The ultimate slasher film. Camp counselors getting slaughtered at the infamous Crystal Lake by Jason's crazy mom. The ending [while ripped off by CARRIE] is still classic horror. [3 Howls, 2 Points - Although I would like to make a case for BBP for a young Jason attacking Alice in her canoe at the end of the film]
FRIDAY THE 13TH PART 2 (1981) - Decent sequel involving adult Jason's first appearance, in his sack-mask no less. The death scenes and Amy Steel's final girl performance are the highlights for what is a iffy remake of the original. I still feel sorry for that dude in the wheelchair. [2 Howls, 2 Points]
ELVIRA, MISTRESS OF THE DARK (1988) - One of the best horror-comedies of all time. Elvira, needing money for a gig in Las Vegas, moves to Massachusetts to acquire her aunt's inheritance, leading to the discovery that she's a witch. Cheesy and campy but it's a film I watch every October. The boob sequence at the end still makes me drool after all these years. [3.5 Howls, 2 Points]
SLEEPAWAY CAMP (1983) - One of my favorite slasher films, due to Felissa Rose's performance and that incredibly shocking finale that's the reason why people still talk about this one today. [3.5 Howls, 4 Points - BBP for Angela (who's 13) being the main antagonist of the film]
MASTERS OF HORROR (2005) - "The V Word" - Michael Ironside, as a vampire, terrorizes two best friends who decide visiting a funeral home is more fun than playing video games. [1 point]
DEXTER (2009) - "Blinded By The Light" - Dexter's routines are interrupted by some deliquent neighbors. [1 point]
So 10 films and 2 TV shows = 28 points.
Not sure how the third week will go, although I do have four films that will involve children. So we'll see what happens. Good luck to everyone in the contest.
