I wanted to re-post the AMSOIL Action News Presidents message. This was from The August 2009 issue. The Action News is a company magazine that highlights new products, dealer recognition and other news about AMSOIL.

I have written often in this column about the importance
of self-promotion. You may recall the phrase I have
used many times: “Toot your own horn because no one
will toot it for you.” It is self-explanatory and I will not
dwell on it here. To say it simply, if you are serious about
building your AMSOIL business you should make every
effort to promote your effort. At the very least, wear your
AMSOIL colors and outfit your vehicle with AMSOIL
signage. I could never list the number of stories I have
heard from Dealers who have gained additional business
simply by wearing an AMSOIL shirt, jacket or hat, and I
have had countless Dealers tell me about customers they
have brought on board because of their AMSOIL visibility
on the road. Toot your own horn.
Corporate AMSOIL is doing its part to help you. It is
important to understand that the great majority of multilevel-
marketing companies do very little, if any, advertising
for their distributors. The money that multi-level-marketing companies pay out to their distributors in the form of commissions would, in a traditional marketing environment, be directed toward advertising. AMSOIL is an exception among MLM companies. Despite the smaller margins we set on our products
when compared to most other MLM companies, we invest heavily in advertising and promotional efforts.
In fact, as I am writing this a group of employees here at corporate is preparing to head out to the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally. As the “Official Oil” of Sturgis, AMSOIL has secured an even stronger foothold in the motorcycle market. We are also, as you probably know, the official oil of Daytona Bike Week. The recognition this brings to AMSOIL Dealers, whether active in the motorcycle market or not, is substantial. It is all about increasing AMSOIL brand awareness. That benefits all Dealers.
Additional events we have partnered in have further increased our visibility. Our sponsorship as the official oil of the National Street Rod Association has reinforced the AMSOIL name in yet another ideal market. The NSRA is a dedicated network of more than 55,000 classic car enthusiasts. The organization conducts 13 national events per year that are attended by over 250,000 people. The real exposure, however, comes from the tremendousamount of magazine coverage we receive.
Along similar lines, AMSOIL is the official oil of the
Diesel Power Challenge. This event brings the most
dedicated diesel pickup truck owners in the nation
together for two days of grueling competition, including
drag racing, sled pulling and horsepower testing. The
event, and AMSOIL, receives over 40 pages of magazine
coverage and national television exposure.
We are also the official oil of the Four Wheeler Top
Truck Challenge. Participants from throughout North
America converge to test their abilities and machines. Like
the Diesel Power Challenge, the trucks are subjected to a
series of rigorous tests, including a hill climb, obstacle
course and towing competition. Our exposure is generated
by full-blown coverage in Four Wheeler magazine and an
hour long television feature.
Perhaps our most exposure is gained by our affiliation as
the “Presenting Sponsor and Exclusive Official Oil” of the
premier off-road short course racing series in North America.
The Traxxas TORC Series Presented by AMSOIL delivers
national television exposure on ABC and ESPN2. Couple
that with our sponsorship of several of the Series’ most
popular drivers – Scott Douglas, Mike Oberg, Chad Hord,
among others – and we are making our name a household
word in another profitable market for AMSOIL Dealers.
We also continue as the primary sponsor of North
America’s most competitive and popular snocross series.
Now titled the AMSOIL Championship Snocross Series,
this affiliation, again, provides exposure in a market comprised
of thousands upon thousands of knowledgeable

The newspapers and media have not let up from reminding people how bad things are in the economy. But don't be seduced into believing the sky is falling. Here are three reasons savvy AMSOIL Dealers can increase their business during this time of turbulence:
1. Many people are taking better care of their vehicles. Many people held off from buying new cars in 2008 because of economic uncertainty, but there were a lot more who were denied the opportunity to buy a new vehicle due to the credit crunch. In either case, people want to protect the vehicles they are driving. What to Avoid, What to Expect and How to Succeed.
In tough economic times people inevitably begin to worry. The security that once marked American jobs cannot be taken for granted, and people can feel oppressed by the uncertainty of their employment futures. Multi-level marketing (MLM) provides individuals the opportunity to control their own destinies.Whether a person is looking for a career, part-time employment or the security of additional income, multi-level marketing is an attractive option.
What to Avoid
MLM companies have been around for decades and have offered viable and profitable business ventures to tens of thousands of independent business owners. AMSOIL INC. adopted its MLM program in1973 when, unfortunately, unlike AMSOIL, some MLM companies took the principles of multi-levelmarketing and twisted them for their own profit at the expense of hopeful and hard-working distributors. As a result, many would-be successful independent business owners have been turned off by the opportunities that legitimate companies offer. Because of this, the Federal Trade Commission(FTC) stepped in to help entrepreneurs differentiate legal, legitimate MLM companies from their less than-honest counterparts.
AMSOIL Dealers should be aware of the factors that separate the good companies from the bad and be prepared to communicate that information when sharing the AMSOIL business opportunity with potential AMSOIL Dealers.
The FTC warns would-be business owners about marketing plans that offer to pay commissions for recruiting new distributors. Most states outlaw this practice, known as “pyramiding,” because plans that pay commissions for recruiting new distributors, without product sales, will eventually collapse when no new distributors can be recruited, resulting in significant monetary loss for everyone involved, except for those at the very top.
The FTC looks at where revenues are generated to help them determine the legitimacy of an MLM company. A multi-level compensation system funded primarily by payments made for the right toparticipate in the venture (ex. tapes, books, etc.) isan illegal pyramid scheme and should be avoided.
The FTC also cautions against plans that require new distributors to purchase expensive inventory to become involved. This often results in distributors becoming saddled with a significant amount of inventory that is essentially worthless. Many plans promise miraculous results or guarantee enormous monetary earnings, and it is important for distributors to ask for hard proof that the claims are legitimate and substantiated.
As an AMSOIL Dealer, educate yourself about the dangers of illegitimate MLM companies. Being able to put potential Dealers’ fears about MLM companies to rest from the start will help establish a relationship of trust and reinforce the legitimacy of the AMSOIL business opportunity.

What to Expect
There are several important qualities that set legitimate MLM companies apart from their not-so-legitimate counterparts. First, the company must have stability. An established, time-tested company will already have a strong market presence and, therefore, be more stable. Newer, untested companies are more risky. The best companies work hard to establish solid reputations. They look to the future and commit to long-term goals. They pay their bills and commission checks on time and reinvest money for improvement and growth. In addition, the good MLM companies employ experienced management and skilled technical people.
Legitimate companies provide a real product or service that is in demand by the general public. The product must perform as intended and the better the product, the easier it is to sell. Not only does quality attract consumers, it inspires confidence and enthusiasm in the distributors. It’s best if the company manufactures its own product line to insure quality control and pride. It also helps if the product line is large and diverse, and the products must be competitively priced.
Company support is also a key indicator of a legitimate MLM company. Knowledgeable distributors are successful distributors, and good MLM companies put great effort into training. They provide a wide selection of literature and educational tools to enhance company and product understanding.
Good MLM companies also provide direct access for dealers and distributors, allowing them to become, in a real sense, part of the company. Open phone and e-mail policies, conventions and annual meetings provide the personal contact that is important for the training and morale-building that is necessary to succeed in the multi-level industry.
Good MLM companies make only legitimate and supportable claims. They don’t promise instant riches, and they provide accurate compensation materials to distributors. With good companies, the facts speak for themselves.Finally, the best MLM companies have dedicated dealer forces. A good company inspires in dealers a confidence which leads to credibility and professionalism.Good people are attracted to good companies,and they find security in knowing that their commitment pays off.

When I first began this company back in 1972 and attempted to distribute our products through conventional channels the roadblocks were many and the sales were few. Consumers couldn’t see the benefits as it sat there on the shelves, but once we transitioned to multi-level marketing the company flourished, and we have never looked back. On pages eight and nine of this issue of your Action News is a brief overview of the multi-level marketing industry and some of the attributes that separate those companies with solid income potential from those companies without. You can read the article, but I want to use this space to provide my personal take on the subject. I ask myself, if I were looking for a business opportunity, why would I choose AMSOIL?
First, is the quality of the products. I know some people may get tired of me constantly talking about our products, but I’ve been doing it for about 40 years and I’m not about to stop now. I keep telling people, I’m not selling – I’m just telling.
From the very first can of AMSOIL 10W-40 to the lubricants rolling off the line today, AMSOIL has never compromised on quality. We do things with our products that other companies won’t do or don’t have the expertise to do. We don’t make “minimum standard” products. We never have. When I was formulating our original two-cycle oil, I wanted that oil to be as tough as I could possibly make it. And although it cost more to do so, I kept insisting that we take it to the next level by adding more of a particular additive.The oil was already better than anything on the market, but I wanted to know how far I could take it,regardless of cost. I think the additive supplier thought I was crazy, but he knew perfectly well who was making the best two-cycle oil in the world.
Beyond the quality of our products is the issue of demand. There must be people willing to buy them. And, of course, there are. Our markets are diverse, and our Dealers have found sales success in all types of applications. If it has a motor and moving parts, and the owner wants to protect that investment, it’s an application for AMSOIL products. We’ve made outstanding penetration in a full range of profitable markets, including the motorcycle market, snowmobile market and virtually all other powersports markets.The diesel market has been good to us, and, of course, all motorists looking for value through longer lasting equipment and extended drain intervals are ideal candidates for AMSOIL products.
Another critical hallmark is the stability of a company. I take great pride in knowing that since AMSOIL adopted its multi-level marketing plan in 1973 we have never missed a payment – not to our Dealers and not to our suppliers. Any soon-to-be Dealer can look at our track record and determine quite easily that there is real potential in the opportunity we provide.Thousands of Dealers have realized that potential and thousands more will follow. We make no outrageous promises, but can guarantee that hard work, dedication and a well-thought-out game plan can translate directly to Dealer success. AMSOIL has provided that success for 35 years, and we have proven that our business opportunity is one people can count on.
We have also been diligent in our training efforts. Beyond our website training and the training gained through all of our printed materials, we offer face-to-face instruction, most notably at AMSOIL University. I don’t know of a more intense training opportunity offered by any company, let alone a multi-level marketing company. With programs offered for all levels of Dealer experience, AMSOIL U is the single most comprehensive training event the company has ever offered. The numbers show that those Dealers who attend AMSOIL University achieve greater levels of success more quickly than those who do not. Whether it is this year or even next, I would encourage all Dealers to begin attending AMSOIL U.
I can tell you honestly that if I was in the position to start all over again and was presented with the AMSOIL opportunity, I would become an AMSOIL Dealer. Our business model offers great potential and serves as an example of all that is right with multi-level marketing.

We have another year behind us now and can look back at 2008 with a major sense of accomplishment. The highlight, of course, was the celebration of our35 years as a multi-level marketing company. It is hard to believe it has been that long since our very first AMSOIL Dealers came on board and began what would become a wonderful journey of opportunity and success. I cannot possibly express how gratifying it has been to witness the efforts of the countless Dealers who have realized their dreams through the AMSOIL business opportunity. It is equally gratifying to know that countless more will follow.
I am not, however, one who looks back for long. It is fine to appreciate the past and wise to learn from our success and failure, but it is only by looking ahead that we grow as individuals and prepare ourselves for the challenges we face. No one can predict with certainty what the future holds in general, but I can predict with certainty where this company is headed. I will not submit to you a list of New Year's resolutions; resolutions are too easily broken. What I will submit, instead, is a list of relevant facts; these you can accept as truth.
Fact one: AMSOIL INC. will continue to provide the absolute best products in the industry. We have been setting the standard since 1972, and that is certainly not going to change. The quality of our products is what sets us apart from all other lubricant manufacturers. In terms of marketing budgets, we simply can't compete with the Mobils and the Castrols of the world, so we have to let our products do our talking.We survive on quality, and the base oil and additive suppliers who work with us are fully aware of that. They don't come to us with the types of ingredients that other companies formulate with. The word average is not in our vocabulary. While others set their prices and then formulate accordingly, we formulate accordingly and then set our prices. At AMSOIL, quality will always come first.
Fact two: AMSOIL INC. will continue along the path of sound decision making and financial responsibility. We will continue to reinvest in the company in those areas where growth dictates we should, and we will refrain from spending foolishly in those areas where prudent thought dictates we shouldn't. As I said in last month's column, the decisions I make, along with our Executive Vice Presidents Alan Amatuzio and Dean Alexander, are made through personal commitments to see this company prosper. We continue to grow through both good times and bad, and that, bottom line, is because we know what it takes to succeed in this business. Furthermore, we have too much of ourselves invested in this company to allow anything to hinder its progress.
Fact three: AMSOIL INC. will maintain its position as a leader in integrity. We have gained the respect of the entire industry, not only through our commitment to quality, but through our honest, straight-forward approach to business, as well. The companies that deal with AMSOIL know exactly what they will get from us. We tell it like it is, pay our bills on time and treat others as we expect to be treated. We make no deceptive advertising claims and don't hide behind marketing ploys. With AMSOIL, what you see is what you get.
Fact four: AMSOIL INC. will continue to support its Dealer network in every way possible. This company made a commitment to our Dealers in 1973, and we have never, and will never, waver from that commitment. As part of that commitment, we remain dedicated to providing the types of promotional materials and training opportunities you need to succeed in your business. I can't think of another company that goes further in that regard. You can also be assured that the lines of communication between the Dealer network and corporate AMSOIL will continue to remain open. Your input is critical to us, and don't think for one moment that we don't place great value in that.

The other day a new dealer asked me this question: "How do I sign up a ROTS (Retail-on-the-Shelf) account?"
AMSOIL is one of the few business opportunities that allow independent distributors to work directly with Commercial and Retail businesses. Working with ROTS accounts can dramatically increase cash flow of your business.
Some facts about ROTS accounts:
As an AMSOIL Servicing Dealer, you can earn commissions and commission credits by registering retail and commercial accounts.
A Retail On-The-Shelf Account is a business that operates out of a storefront or outlet where there is public access for customers. This business normally sells associated merchandise at retail prices or provides product as part of a service, and is local or regional with up to 12 outlets. The business does not sell AMSOIL products through the internet or retail catalogs, must not operate out of the home or be located at a residence, and AMSOIL should not be the primary business.
After your Commercial/Retail Account has been registered with AMSOIL INC., you will be eligible to earn a commission and commission credits on all AMSOIL products your account purchases under the terms established by AMSOIL INC. Your retail commission, commercial commission and commission credits will be paid with the month's business in which AMSOIL INC. receives payment in full for your account's purchases.
Retail: You will receive a 20% retail commission on your retail account's purchases, unless otherwise specified. In addition, you will receive commission credits totaling 20% of the dollar amount of the product.** These will be accumulated with your personal group commission credits for payment according to the AMSOIL (G-47 compensation) Sales Plan.
My personal explanation on registering ROTS accounts:
There are only 2 ways to register a ROTS account. 1. Log into the AMSOIL Dealers zone. Then click on the link: EZ Retail and Commercial Account Application This is where you get started. From there you will choose if it's a commercial or ROTS account. Once you click the appropriate one you will be prompted to enter all the pertinent information on that account. When you get to the end you will be asked to give your credit card number and you will be charged $6 for processing. AMSOIL will process the application, send the new account a welcome packet and account number. Be sure to have the account Fax their Tax ID certificate to 715-392-5225. I like the online version because I can easily track my C/R accounts that I have registered on there. I can also get the new account number within 24 hours usually. This is great for accounts that want to make an order. The other way to register a ROTS account is to order a G1001 ROTS account packet. The cost of this is $3 and includes the registration packet that AMSOIL would send to the customer that you registered online. These are great when you are prospecting or working trade shows because they can register on the spot and take their price list and information with them. You can also take an order with this packet and fax both the account registration form, the tax ID certificate, and the order at the same time. AMSOIL will make all registrations with orders a priority and ship out the products ASAP. Along with the registration form you will need to complete the account profile sheet which is included in the packet. The G numbers for accounts are. G1001 (Retail on the Shelf Application Packet) $3 G1007 (Commercial Account Application Packet) $3 AMSOIL charges $6 for online registration but takes care of shipping the packet to the customer. You can save money on the G1001/G1007 packets if you order them when doing trade shows through the T-1 Co-op program. T-1 Dealers that are working trade shows (car shows, bike shows, fairs, etc) will get a check for 1/3 the price of the booth and ½ off all literature purchased for that show. The ever-increasing price of crude oil has consistently beenamong the top news stories in the nation, as well as a hot topic of conversation. With the average price of a barrel of crude oil wellabove the $100 mark and continually climbing and setting record highs, the average price of gasoline has been hovering right around a record $4 a gallon.
The volatility of the crude oil market, as well as high gasoline and diesel prices, directly or indirectly affects just about every industry and business in the marketplace, increasing their cost of doing business and leaving them no choice but to pass the increased cost onto their customers. The lubricants industry is no exception, as crude oil price volatility dramatically drives up the costs of both synthetic and conventional base stocks and the additives used to manufacture lubricants, while the costs of bottles, packaging, hard parts and shipping are also indirectly affected by rising energy prices.
Keeping price increases to an absolute minimum is a top priorityat AMSOIL. When forced to increase prices or implement an energy surcharge, the company's only goal is to recover its increased production costs. Because informing customers of price adjustments is not an easy or pleasant task, it is important for AMSOIL Dealers to understand and explain this positionusing straight forward and honest reasoning. Other points to consider include the following:
Competing Motor Oil Brands Have Experienced More Dramatic Price Increases
Rising crude oil prices affect every lubricant company in the industry, and each has been forced to increase prices and implement energy surcharges to compensate. For example, while AMSOIL has been forced to implement an energy surcharge of 5 percent for May, June and July, almost all competing motor oil companies have increased their prices to distributors by 8 to 15 percent in recent months, with more increases almost certainly onthe horizon.
According to Jobbers World figures obtained from leading autoparts chain stores in December 2005 and May 2008, competitive motor oil quart pricing has increased at an equal or greater percentage over that time period than AMSOIL synthetic motor oil (see chart below).

Jobbers World figures indicate that competitive synthetic motor oils cost more than AMSOIL synthetic motor oils (at Dealer/P.C.pricing).
