Sometimes I am glad that I stay up late, other times I regret it.  Today it is both.  While I had a great time dancing to authentic reggae djs, I came across the attention that Adam Goldstein AKA DJ AM has passed away due to a drug overdose.

“He was shirtless, in sweat pants on his bed. Unfortunately, they found several prescription pill bottles near his body. We're told also a pipe was found, commonly used to smoke drugs out of. DJ AM has been sober for many years, and this is kind of a shocker to everybody who knows him,” said TMZ Staff Writer Mike Walters.

I am closing this official, almost blog-like press release-news brief to let you all know that we are here for importance -- not just to be on planet earth and sustain but to learn and grow.  Please get your teach on and let people know they can make a difference in others lives.  DJ AM survived a plane crash and, like us all has gone through tramatic life circumstances -- we are all on different levels.  Just remember what level you are on and where you want to be.  Break'n News 4 Peace!

By Aaris A. Schroeder

If you know me, you know that I don't take shit and I call you out if you dish it.  I want to make it clear to everyone out there that reads UBO Magazine, has heard about UBO Magazine, is a client of UBO or has paid for advertising.  If you paid for an advertisement, it was published.  Whether it was online or hardcopy.  Period.  I choose not to be unethical and I choose to put my business out there for everyone to see because I deal with the public by communicating information to them about local news, entertainment, etc.  If I wasn't ethical then it would have already been publicised.

Now, on another subject, if you are a writer and want to write for UBO, you do not get paid.  Why?  Because our advertisements are dirt cheap so that we can publish a small 'zine for the people.  It is an underground, independent 'ZINE.  When it comes out from being underground and once we can get enough support from local businesses and services, that is when writers and photographers will be paid.  There is no trick in this business, I am straigh forward and tell you how it is.  The reason why?  Because I choose to have an ethical business.

If you are a writer, possess great talent, went to school for journalism, have interned for newspapers or mags or even worked at a publication before and know every crafty word possible but still can't put together a story -- there just may be something wrong with you.  First of all, journalism is based off an 8th grade reading level so that everyone can enjoy the news, secondly if you get paid to write and don't do pro-bono work, please don't write for UBO, I don't need you.  So if you want to intern or support the cause, this is your mag!  I do, however respect people that want to put effort into a magazine that is getting the word out about underground, independent and unsigned music, art, businesses, services and culture!

Another thing, be a real person and be honest about your intentions.  When you aren't, you are leading me on and making yourself look like an ass.  Even if you are a really nice person.  I am not in this business to run around with every guy in the industry -- that is not my intention.  At the very least, allow me the opportunity to decide for myself if you are a worthwhile person who I would want to get to know in any other way than professional, you can not weasle your way in, it doesn't work.

This includes a lot of things such as skateboarding.  Skateboarding is an urban sport.  There are several sub-cultures linked within skateboarding as well as different types of skatebaorders and levels of the craft.  If someone can't come up with a story on such a subject then they need to reassess their craft as a writer.  Or maybe they just have writer's block and now I sound like a jerky ass.

Either way, if I can bust out ten feature stories that are written in A.P. Style then why can't someone who desires to write not be able to bust out 150 words?  I really sound like a jerk now -- but I want to put what I do out there so that everyone can understand my ethics before people begin talking shit or offering hearsay.

I have been in this situation before in my personal life -- and like I said, you act like an ass then you are an ass -- I just let everyone know -- it is my job, right?  There is information that I know about people that doesn't need to be put in the streets because that is their shit whether they told me or someone gossipped it to me.  I will, however put your shit out there if you are unethical, talk shit [to my face or behind it], steal from me, lie to me or betray me or my business.

Advertizing

UBO Magazine promotes underground, unsigned and independent artists through mediaBy Aaris A. Schroeder, Founder & Editor-In-Chief.

This being said, let’s keep this nice and simple. UBO has conducted surveys and research on specific demographics, narrowing it down to a 30:70 male to female ratio which includes an age range of 15-years-old up to 35-years of age.

This group is intelligent and pays attention to its community.  They are most likely creative and are a part of the indie music or art scene or they could just be a fan.  These people most-likely have been attending college, shopping locally at boutiques purchasing hot digs, records and comic books.

They dig different scenes such as hip-hop, reggae, soul, punk-rock, metal, indie-rock and even electronic DJ mixes.  They kick it at local coffee shops listening to open-mics and may even perform a poem or bust out an acoustic instrument.  They dream big and that is where you come in.

When you market your business to the correct demographic, your business will prosper.  These people want to support your business and you were specifically chosen because of they type of business that you run.

We understand that in hard economic times, advertising budgets are cut and even UBO has to take a step back which is why we are offering terrifically low-marked marketing costs.  Check it out!

UBO MAGAZINE TOP FRIENDS
TO RECEIVE VIP
PUBLICIST TREATMENT,
ROTATING BI-WEEKLY

By Aaris A. Schroeder

UBO Magazine

We have all heard it before, poting bulletin after bulletin, adding friend after friend and getting on folk's top buddy list on MySpace is the way to get more hits on your MySpace page.  What better place to do it than with a MySpace page for independent and underground artists and musicians.

If you are in a band, make music, are an emcee, DJ, producer, engineer, have a professional studio, make art in any way, own a record label, have a clothing line or an urban boutique, record store; whatever it is that you have, if you are out there making it happen for the indie and urban music and art scene -- I want you on my top friends.  I only will post eight at a time and will filter them bi-weekly [define: every other week].  I will send you informative info about UBO Magazine [top story leaks, etc] as well as industry assistance - need help building your biography, help writing a press release?  If you are in my top eight, you get this help for two weeks, so use wisely!

Now, how do you get involved in this top eight?  Simply send me a comment stating that you want to be in my top eight along with your myspace page name; i.e.: www.myspace.com/DJROBdaNOYZE not DJ Rob Da Noyze or your e-mail or anything else...I want to be able to fine you:)  If you don't have a MySpace Name for your page then you are officially out of the game.

Once I place you on my top friends list, you must put me on yours within 48 hours [I will notify you] or else you will be dumped and someone else will be able to take your place.  You can be rotated back in but must resubmit your request via comment on MySpace.

Perhaps it is because Myspace doesn't provide an adequate blogging environment for a journalist?  Maybe it is because I can't get a good graphic designer to work with me to create a fantastic, fresh, urban e-zine?  It could even be for the simple reason I just won't stop writing.

WEBSITES VS. BLOGGING
UBO moved from
www.ubomag.com, our official website since '03 [before that it was www.undergroundbeatonline.com and .net] and into the blogging world.  First I tried BlogSpot but the way it was organized was, well unorganized.  I even tried to forward www.ubomag.com to the blogspot mainframe with no success.  I actually used the Blog method for about a year and felt like giving up.  I couldn't gauge how many people were visiting and it seemed because of the lack of organization, people wouldn't really visit more than just the one blog with a list of reviews and features...boring...

The Creation of UBOMAG.WORDPRESS.COM
Now UBO has moved to blog elsewhere.  Check out
www.wordpress.com.  It is far more professional and works with your unique needs as a blogger.  Being a journalist with no web designer, I felt it neccesary to choose a glossy, journalistic feel -- there are several to choose from.  You can also make a custom-frame.
Anyways, I have been playing with it since December and have slowly been getting more and more hits.  Since the creation of MySpace, UBO has suffered lack of hits but popularity locally and growth world-wide has definately made up for that.

So if you are ever interested in reading about awesome album or show reviews, compelling features on bands and really cool people or just want the low-down in our opinion or news section, UBO has you covered!  I also write colorful editorials such as this one to facinate you day after day.

UBO MAG NEWS BULLETIN

By Aaris A. Schroeder

DJ Rated R is in the hospital being treated after a car accident that recently occurred while the DJ was on tour in The Phillipeans.  If you want to donate to help the family with medical costs, there is a Pay Pal link that you can connect to below on behalf of Live Manikins.

The story; according to Self, emcee for Live Manikins, DJ Rated R along with several others were on the road in a car in the country part of the Phillipeans.  The group hit a hill and the breaks went out on the car and they went through a ravine.  DJ RatedR was ejected from the car and received a concussion while everyone else in the car suffered minor injuries such as bruises and scrapes.   Later on; while Rated R was in the hospital in critical condition, it was found that he also received a broken clavicle, cervical and collar bone and had to get brain and spine surgery.  Because these are expensive surgeries, the family is asking for donations.  Rated R is currently stablized and is going through treatments to get better.

Please donate by clicking on the PayPal logo below

Live Manikins & DJ Rated R have won the Critics' Choice Awards for
OUTSTANDING LIVE PERFORMANCE & OUTSTANDING DJ/TURNTABLIST

Difficult as it is, this is a battleground. Artists don't neccesarily know hip-hop from business and culture from ..industry... Truth is, I feel that I, along with very few in Sacramento can actually bring forth the true elements of the hip-hop culture. This is a very strong statement to address and until other people feel responsible for hip-hop in Sacramento, I will continue to feel this way. Not only do I provide a way for hip-hop enthusiasts to view online stories but I network them within eachother, book concerts, market events and make an organized complete ..collective.. of artists, DJs, bands, poets, engineers and so much more.

Becoming one of the most "google-able" people in Sacramento is not an accident and if anyone in Sacramento feels they are on my level -- I probably know who they are. This is not to state that I am not humble but that I know what I am working with.

I have no problem telling people my secrets to the trade granted they are willing to participate in the growth of the community.

Here is one thing...If someone tells me to book someone else and I don't know who they are, then the band no matter how great they are didn't market themselves well enough. I know nearly every artist, Christian, Jewish, street-rap, back-pack, conscious, gutter -- whatever.

Focus on growth [marketing], whether it is guerrilla, online, mixer/networking, event mingling, through affiliate/friends, etc. These are the most important pieces of your future. You can make poetry or what not all day long in bed or the studio but until someone who didn't know u can appreciate you -- you can't say you have accomplished your marketing duties towards your artistic career.

Sacramento, like many cities and communities demands the best -- even if the line doesn't draw industry standards -- your job is to go beyond your community. We are here to share with others our lives and standards. If we cut them staying local or loosing our community drawl -- we fall out.

UBO Magazine
Editorial Piece

By Aaris A. Schroeder
December 5, 2008

This year was quite successful for UBO Magazine and Public Relations.  Not only was I able to continue creating, booking, organizing and producing hip-hop shows at music and art venues but I began fruitful relationships with different clients in the public relations field.  Artists that were definately up-and-coming in this area -- now are out and about all over Sacramento and surrounding cities.

Although UBO Magazine won't be able to move from online to hardcopy with the way our economy is oving, that isn't such a bad thing.  Everyone seems to have a computer and more and more, the e-zine I created is now something people want to check out whereas before it was unattainable or even cliqued as "to humble" or not adequate as a zine.

One of the highlights of this year is that my True Emcee BBQs which really can only happen in the summer and have too much planning and people involved really to happen has turned into one-on-one meetings, e-mails and phone calls to network ideas, contact and biz info as well as art and music around to create the colaborative genious of a resource: Sacramento Urban Directory.

Here is the deal, I am looking for people right now that want to shoot cameras and film at shows and interviews [Q&A] and to write show and album reviews.  Features will get a little bit tighter as only the best of the best in our region will get interviewed matched with other larger artists out of this area.

I am also looking for a couple folks who want to get down on phone calls -- details when you hit me up.  This is an in-house operation and info can not be shared with anyone!  You will be signing contracts that will not be breached or else!

Other than that, I am now the A&R Represenative and part-curator for Shiny Nickle Art Gallery as well as in the works with a couple other galleries for some events, that we will keep under wrap until the new year!
