On Saturday, November 28, Taylor and I went to the Three Days Grace show opened by The Used and Default at The Medicine Hat Arena. Overall it was a good show and one of the few non-punk rock shows I have been to. Default is a fairly good band, and it being the first time I have heard them since about 2003, I enjoyed their performance except for the fact that the lead guitarist, Jeremy Hora, looked very apathetic. It looked like he could care less that he was in front of a thousand people. Luckily Default’s bass player, Dave Benedict, who bore a striking resemblance to Liam Neeson, used his Qui-Gon Jin Force powers to get the crowd pumped for the upcoming acts. Post by Justin:Quick introduction… My name is Justin Quinton, I have lived in the Hat almost 6 years, originally from Newfoundland (although my accent has all but been repressed) and I have been digging through this city since day one to find a ’scene’. Any scene. Music, art, theatre… even a pretentious artsy group that won’t give me the time of day. This has led me to discover two things; Yes there is enormous amounts of talent here! And no, not a lot of people care. Continue reading: http://www.medicinehatmedia.com/2009/11/much-ado-about-media/

Have you ever received a parking ticket that you felt was unwarranted and you do not want to pay the fine? Well with a little research, some photographs and a nicely typeset report, you have a chance to get out of it, but only if you are in the right. My story begins a couple of years ago. One day I parked in an the alley of a parking lot – a place I have parked many times without consequence – outside Vaughn and Dusty’s place. A few hours later when I left, I had a ticket that stated I was in violation of Section 3.2 of Bylaw 2324, which begins with “No person shall park a motor vehicle in an alley unless he [sic] is actively engaged in:” followed by the summary “(3.2) The loading or unloading of goods or passengers from a vehicle for no longer than 5 minutes as long as the vehicle does not obstruct traffic.” Continue reading: http://www.medicinehatmedia.com/2009/11/fighting-parking-tickets-if-you-are-in-the-right/

We all have an opinion on the Medicine Hat Police Service, but what
happens to our opinion of the organization and its chief, Andy
McGrogan, when they get called to deal with a potentially live
artillery shell that happens to be in a school? No hype intended or
required, they accomplished this all on their own:
The story starts out with James Chatfield, an electrician and a
former British Army soldier, doing work in CAPE School. He stumbles
upon an artillery shell in a storage room above the stage of the
gymnasium that is rarely used. Though it is kind of random that it was
there, anyone would understand that the principal, teacher, students
and parents would definitely treat this as a threat; anyone but the
Police, it appears...

On October 24th, Taylor and I revisited Devine Grill, but this time we dined in the restaurant, as opposed to our last visit where we dined on the patio.
Both Taylor and I were immediately impressed with the decor inside
the restaurant which created an elegant atmosphere. What is more, there
was an assortment of appealing art on the walls that we later found out
to be all local, which were separated into three galleries around the
restaurant. As it turned out, one of the sets of art on the walls
turned out to be from Donna Macauley.

A post by Taylor:While in the mall yesterday I noticed that a new restaurant will be joining our food court. But much to my dismay, upon closer investigation I discovered that this new addition will be yet another Tim Hortons. Why does Medicine Hat need another one? Isn’t having one in nearly every corner of the city enough? Will it ever be enough? Continue reading: http://www.medicinehatmedia.com/2009/10/tim-hortons-an-epidemic/

The Village People are discoing their way to Medicine Hat to “rock” The Esplanade on October 31, 2009 at 8PM. The 6 member disco group needs no introduction as to who they are after being around since the late 1970’s. Their costumes and culturally iconic songs are immediately recognizable to the masses, even to people who do not commonly listen to the group. People are encouraged to wear their best costume (it’s Halloween, after all) as there will be lots of pre-show hi-jinx in the lobby with local band Mahoney and local magic man, Trevor Moore... Here’s another one of those bigger name bands showing up in Medicine
Hat in 2009. Vancouver band, Marianas Trench will be playing an all
ages show at the Cypress Centre on October 30th, 2009. With them, are
three guests: The New Cities, Carly Rae Jepsen (of Canadian Idol fame),
and The Mission District. All of the bands are in or around the same
genre: that pop-punky rock type stuff, some might reference “emo” as
well with except Carly Rae Jepsen who is more folk-pop. They are also
all Canadian bands ranging from all over the country. Continue reading: http://www.medicinehatmedia.com/2009/09/marianas-trench-live-on-october-30th/
