Hi all, I'm an intern here at Funzalo Records. I have been working here for about 2 months and it has been a lot different than I thought.
I thought it would be good for people to know what its like to work for an independant record label because a common misunderstanding is that record labels have unlimited amounts of money that gets thrown around for their artists and that simply isn't the case.
A lot of work is done to just get an artist noticed let alone have an album produced and it can at times be frustrating as hell to not have things happened the way they're planned.
So with this said, I'm going to give insight to how some things are done around here to shed some reality on this business. Although I am just an intern, you gotta crawl before you walk and I hope that through my exeperiences you can better understand how s*** goes down in the industry.
Hope you enjoy,

A heavy air lingers in the office today as everyone laments two major losses in the music industry.  Both will drastically change the industry as we know it.  The first major loss deals with the Virgin Megastore in Times Square New York. It is closing, and will allegedly be replaced by Forever 21.  I believe that is a lame-ass tween clothing store, but I could be wrong.  The second major loss concerns the movie The Jonas Brothers: the 3D Concert Experience.  It was a complete flop at the box office.

Ok, so maybe the second one isn't such a big deal, but Brian is really worked up over it.  I got him a cup of water and some tissues, but he is just now barely recovering from his intense sobbing.  It makes the rest of us around the office a little uncomfortable.  We didn't know he liked them so much.  But in all seriousness, it is apparent that the concert movie is not a genre America is willing to take back.

The Virgin Megastore closing down, however, is a big deal.  Record shopping in person is simply out of fashion.  It is no longer profitable these days with all of the illegal downloading and streaming that goes on online.  People just don't want all that plastic and packaging when it 's all going on to an iPod anyway.

You might ask what should you do in these desperate times.  Well here is the answer; go to http://www.funzalorecords.com/ and order any of our incredible artists' music online.  It costs less than the $15.19 discounted CD you could buy at the Virgin Megastore, and it can be bought directly onto your iTunes!  What's more is that it's high quality and sounds much better than that shit you download off Limewire.  Experience the new-wave trend of ordering your music legally online today.  It is incredibly invigorating!

I've been interning here at Funzalo for about a month now and I must say it has been one of the more refeshing experiences in my life.  I grew up in Gifted, taking honors classes in junior high, AP credit exams up the ass in high school, and no less than 19 credits a semester at the University of Arizona.  Oh, and I will graduate in eight semesters despite changing my major three times.  Let's just say I've been an over-achiever.

The catch is, I have no idea what I've been achieving.  Other people's recognition is the only thing I can think of.  Before embarking on my adventures at Funzalo, my only real work experience was/is (I'm still there unfotunately) with Blockbuster.  Blockbuster is cool because I like videos and games, and they let me rent them for free.  However, the work environment totally blows.  I can't work a lot, as I'm a full time student and heavily involved in other activities (like marching band and pep band and Kappa Kappa Psi, the national honorary band fraternity... I'm kind of a band nerd... and I think that's cool).  If I'm not cheery and kissing my boss' ass at Blockbuster, he makes my life a living hell, usually by scheduling me when I'm unavailable and forcing me to get my shifts covered or setting unrealistic sales goals so he can write me up (it gets him off or something...).

The purpose of all this background is to provide you, the reader, with the most accurate and honest opinion of my experiences at Funzalo.  THIS IS THE MOST FUN I'VE HAD in a work environment ever.  When I came to interview for the internship I was hella nervous.  I had revised my resume and cover letter about fifteen times and had my dad proofread it twice.  I got dressed up in what I thought would be appropriate for the work place (a blue button-down shirt, some khaki pants, and a nice belt and shoes), and was very nervous.

I walked into the office here and was extremely surprised at what I saw.  Mike and Jennifer were both in pretty casual clothes getting business done, but in an unfamiliar manner to me (using curse words...).  The interview with Jennifer was refreshing as hell, quick and to the point.  My final question for her was what was appropriate to wear to the office and she said "Whatever is comfortable for you, and we'll let you know if anyone important is coming in so you don't wear your fuck shirt".  She then sent me off with a number of CD's of artists on our label for me to get familiar with.

It's been crazy fun sailing since.  Jennifer, Ryan, and Brian have all been incredible mentors, explaining the inner-workings of the music business as issues pop up around the office.  Watching them all interact with each other is an experience I am grateful for as well (both for its knowledge and entertainment value).  There are no words to describe how fun, yet productive this place is.  I've put together hundreds of promotional packs, submitted new songs and album info to ASCAP, researched new artists, organizaed our artists' gig books, done more with mailing and emailing lists than I ever thought possible, and get all this done while Ryan and Brian taunt Jennifer with the  giant gold penis statue that  resides on her desk.

Being an intern at Funzalo has been rewarding for me because I get to see all kinds of aspects of the music business world.  It is a much more honest and fast-paced environment than I am used to, but music is an honest and fast-paced commodity.

I guess in summary, if you're bored and in Tucson, you should try interning at Funzalo Records.  Yes... I'm pretty sure that was the point I was getting at.

So for those of you who do not know I am in a metal band called Silent Bliss. Yes, me, that lovable little child who would never think of doing anything wrong or illegal. (At least that's what I tell myself, it makes me feel all nice and warm inside). Anyways, I play that scary dark music with the screaming vocals and loud guitars. It's the music I love to play and being in a metal band here at the office can be interesting at times. For I am surrounded by old skool jams and Britney Spears, which can be a liberating experience. It makes me realize how much the music I play and listen to differs from that of my coworkers. Yet, this is not a bad thing, for I learned something: that everyone seems to wish that they were living back in the eighties. Now for me that would be a horrible thing, for if I were to listen to metal back then, my hair would have more products in it then every female in this office, and I would have so many drugs in my system that they could use my blood as a painkiller. So I am thankful for being here in this time period. I don't want to dress up in chicks clothes or do drugs in some hotel room on the Sunset Strip, I just want to play the music that I love to play.

Now with all that being said let me tell you about our last show. Now we were playing with a death metal band from Sweden called Dark Funeral. Now these fine gentlemen are about 6'5 and weigh at least 250 and feel that it is necessary to paint there faces with black and white face paint. I don't know why, they had such beautiful facial features. Now my band is just a group of guys just gong up on stage to play some music. (Lets just say we stuck out a little), and we played our set. I wanted to paint my face like Peter Criss of KISS to fit in with the Dark Funeral guys, but I didn't think they would like that too much. So we played our set and got a great reaction from the crowd. They didn't care how we looked or acted on stage, they just cared about the music. That's why music is great, because it doesn't matter what you look like, if its good, its good and that's what matters. So Fred and Nicole, please continue to listen to your 80's jams, I don't look down upon you for listening to them, I've accepted the fact that you guys are a little "different" from everyone else and that is all right.
