In the Zone!

MAKATO ARTIST OF THE YEAR 2008!

Born in Middletown, Ohio, between Cincinnati & Dayton. Music came from my mother's side of the family. My Uncles played SAX, Trumpet & Trombone, my Mom & Aunts sang and played Piano & Organ in Church. When I stayed with my Aunt & Uncle for a year in Lebanon, Ohio, I started writing song poems in the 5th grade. I wrote one about my 5th grade teacher, Ms Lukens. I was introduced to the Guitar at age 9. But I got serious about music at age 12 and started getting more involved with playing and singing. My first club gig was at age 13, playing behind a local Blues Star from Dayton named " Piney Brown". I sang & danced in talent shows before I learned Guitar.

The family moved to Dayton, a major city. I began to learn a lot from looking, listening and asking questions. I learned Blues, Gospel and then Jazz.
When I was in the army, stationed in Germany, I performed at service clubs and toured the USO circuit entertaining troops. I was also relieved from guard duty & KP to play with my band for the battalion Co. & the officer's parties.

While living in Dayton, I played and recorded Gospel with "The Wondering Souls", "The Gospel Travelers" & "Zion Trumpeteers". We performed in many cities like Detroit, Chicago, Louisville, Memphis, Atlanta and other cities. I played behind the "Different Shades of Brown" from Springfield, Ohio. On the club scene, I performed and recorded with a Blues singer named "Piney Brown". I also worked with Band Leader & Sax man, "Big Jay Bush & The House Rockers." I had also the privilege of working with female Vocalist, Little Dottie People's who is now a famous gospel singer. I worked with " Frank Cole" and "The Night Rockers" from Macon, GA.

I also had my own band at seventeen, called the "Ohio Twisters".
In 1974, I was asked to play guitar with "Heat Wave" which I passed on it. After moving to L.A. in 1975 to audition for "Bobby Womack", I was told by his PR Man that "Barry White" was also looking for guitarist. Fortunately, his office was in the same building, so I went to "Barry White's" office and was sent to his rehearsal studio to meet the band for audition. I passed the audition and the rest is history. Joseph "JoJo" Robertson, Barry's first guitarist introduced me to Barry at "The Soul Train" TV show in Hollywood in April, 1975.

From 1975 to 1979, I toured America, Central America and Europe. I also wrote songs for Barry and recorded on "Music Maestro Please.", "Barry White sings for someone you love", "The Man" and "Rhapsody in White", LP's

I wrote two songs for "The Main Ingredient" singing group. At the end of 1979, I started working with Wolfman Jack's Band on a Blues album and later a TV show called "The Wolfman Jack Radio show." I played with "Chuck Berry" on the pilot show taped in 1980.
I recorded and co-wrote some music on "New Births" album "Platinum City". We've been friends since meeting years ago. I moved to Atlanta in 1980 after finishing with Wolfman and The "Blues Brothers" movie to work & record with "Isaac Hayes." I stayed with Isaac six months after recording on five tracks for "Linda Clifford's" album, which was collaboration between Isaac and Curtis Mayfield, Isaac the Music, Curtis the Lyrics.

I went on the road with a singer called "David Julian" to places like Fargo, ND., Cleveland, Ohio, Syracuse and to Canada- Calgary, Regina, Moosejaw and other parts.
Before leaving for London in 1981, I appeared in Dayton on "The Gil Whitney" TV Show where "The Fifth Dimension" was also on the Show.

I moved to London in 1981 & toured there all around Britain and British Isles, Isle of Wight and Isle of man with Clem Curtis and The Foundations. I also performed and recorded with Jamaican singing group "The Chosen Few". We performed around London and were doing interviews.

I recorded for D.J. and producer Tony Williams of Radio London. I recorded on a song called "It's Over" which went to no. 3 on British Radio which put me on Top of the Pop's TV Music Show with The Funkmasters. I worked with producers like Peter Richards and Steve Harvey.

I moved back to L.A. in 1985 and Barry White called me back for another four years of touring in 1986. I had a great time in Monte Carlo at The Sporting Club. We also performed at The Radio City Music Hall once a year in New York City.

Visit Emmett North Jr. Recordings!

The early years with Barry, we did TV shows like "The Dinah Shores Show" and "The Merv Griffin's Show" later "The Pat Sajacs Show" at CBS-TV, Hollywood.

I recorded original music for "Tony Sepe" of "Domain Records" along with "Bill Sepe" and Michael Nunes, also a video, they were also a part of the Barry White organization and are also my friends.

I later went back to London and met my best friend and drummer Graham Cuttill. Him & I and some more of our friends would perform in Clubs & Pubs around east London. I put together my "In the Zone" album and the music on my EP "The Groove" with their help & assistance.

My "In the Zone" CD was released in London in June 1995 and still being played and sold in Britain, Holland and Belgium. When my album debuted, we performed London's famous "Jazz Cafe", performing the whole album with a packed house, from main floor to the balcony.
In 1998, I recorded and toured England, Finland, Holland and Belgium with " The Atlantic Soul Machine" headed by "Pete Lamont" doing sixties soul. The album was called "Black, White & Blue" of which I co-wrote a track called ..Black, White & Blue". Freddy Couseart from Oostende, Belgium introduced me to this band and booked us in Palermo, Sicily in July 1998.
