With Fat Guys on the radio, Fat Guys in print, and yes -- maybe someday -- Fat Guys on TV, the next step is outdoor advertising: The Great American billboard.
So, ye legions of adoring fans, feast your eyes on this week's Fat Guy's rendering, straight from the desk of the Times-Standard. It could be coming to a highway near you.
Hollywoodland A detective examines the mysterious death of George Reeves, TV's Superman, as played by Ben Affleck.
Faulk: I can admit it without even blinking an eyelash. Pride doesn't even enter into the equation. All things being equal, Ben Affleck makes a better looking fat guy than Chris Durant. Affleck, blue collar boy turned Hollywood star, porks up plenty for this role as the sad and somewhat pathetic character of George Reeves, who struggles in the movie with the weight (pun intended) of failed ambitions. If you're looking for a true biopic, this movie falls short. It dances around the life of Reeves, without really diving in. Instead, the life and death of the chubby man of steel is a lifting-off point for a story about a detective, played by Adrian Brody, who's trying to deal with his own familial failings. In the end, though, it's the movie that fails to carry any of the movie's enticing subjects through to the finish. It picks up on professional rivalries of the detective, on what really happened to Reeves, on Brody's failed love life, then just ends -- like a lousy buffet line -- without dessert. The movie had style, it had a stellar performance from Affleck and a decent one from Brody, but it failed to catch air. Rating: L (for the look and performances)
Durant: I didn't watch the movie. I have no reason, I just didn't go OK? So get off my back. Gosh what do you want from me? I can't see every movie that comes out you know. Gosh, I need some "me" time. But what I did watch over the weekend was Saturday Night Live. I don't make it a point to watch the show like I did in the early '80s and early '90s, but I happened to stumble across it while waiting for my brain to shut down Saturday night. And you know what? I laughed. I didn't chuckle, or snicker, or scoff -- I laughed and I laughed hard, which is a rare reaction for the current line up of Saturday Night Live. I haven't done that in years. It was a rerun from last May I think, but nevertheless, it was funny. I don't know if it was Julia Louis-Dreyfus as host, Al Gore's special appearance, Horatio Sanz, Fred Armisen and Andy Samberg or what, but it was down right funny. Now I will watch as much as possible and if it can keep me awake then it's doing it's job better than it has in the last few years. Rating: XL (for that episode only, the show is on fat-cation for a while)
