Faulk: This flick was like going to a good friend's wedding. The feeling is nice, and it's good to see your friends all dressed up, but as the bride marches up the aisle you can't help but hope they hurry through the pomp and ceremony so you can get to the beer.
I like Sophia Coppola, and I like the feel of this movie. It has near perfect visual appeal coupled with a punk rock mystique that I can't help but find entertaining. But it moves slow, and the dialogue is so sparse that at times you're only hearing the echo of chewed corn kernels in your head.
Kirsten Dunst, as usual, nails her part, as does Jason Schwartzman. In fact, virtually all of the roles are perfectly played, but at the end something was lacking. The movie set out to make a vilified historic figure more human, and ended up without giving her much of a story.

Durant: Here's my theory:
This is how little girls who grow up in their dad's large movie-making shadow play with dolls.
Faulk's right, the movie was slow and kind of aimless at times but it doesn't matter. It's a good flick.
Kirsten Dunst and Jason Schwartzman are perfect, Molly Shannon, Rip Torn and the rest of the cast are perfect.
I could have stood to have had a little bit of footage of the peasants thrashing Versailles.
It's refreshing that she didn't try to follow up "Lost in Translation" with the same type of movie. As far as historical accuracy, I don't know nothing about that, but it's a good movie. And from now on I'm going to say "Party like French monarchy" instead of "Party like a rock star." Those poofy-headed, white-faced, big dress-wearing cats knew how to get down.
And those montage scenes of delicious, fine, sweet, buttery, fruit syrupy, cream-filled French pastry goodness put my diet will power to the test.
Jason Schwartzman is now inducted into the Fat Guy Hall of Fame, meaning we will see whatever movie he's in.
Rating: L/T
