Who Gives Kudos:

As some of you may have heard on NPR's AirTalk this morning, Congress has issued a ruling that SIGNIFICANTLY increases the fees that are paid by internet broadcasters for streaming media, to the point that small webcasters would be racking up bills that FAR exceed their annual revenue - effectively rendering them bankrupt and, therefore, closed.

If this ruling is allowed to stand, it will be a gigantic blow to independant music. Internet radio will have to chase advertisers with a budget hefty enough to pay these gargantuan bills, and therefore indie and experimental music will cease to become a part of their playlist.

Basically, internet radio will start to sound a lot like terrestrial radio. And we all know how much that sucks, right?

Here is a page that gives a simple, straightforward, easy-to-read overview of the situation - live365.com/choice

WHAT CAN YOU DO?
(taken from the above link)
-Send a stamped letter, mailed by U.S. Mail or FedEx to your congressperson (find their mailing address). This type of hand-written message with your own personal story is treated with a LOT of value when received by your congressperson. Include your personal story... your name and location, the type of music you listen to, and how this new royalty will affect you. Be as specific as you possibly can.

-Though it's not nearly as effective as a postmarked letter, you can also send an e-mail message to your Senators and Representatives. With your zipcode or address, you can use this quick, easy e-mail form to get directly to the congressperson for your location: congress.org (use the form letter found there or write your own story)

We work for a small market radio station that is actually on a dial, so you are killing us by taking our listeners from conventional radio to the computer. Independent music will not disappear from peoples playlists just because the advertisers don't want to broadcast them. It is less costly to create and maintain a website with mp3s for sale than it is to pay for a subscription to internet radio,so why not tell these broadcasters to make a website and podcast their shows - but then one could also just as easily record a show and put it on myspace for no charge to anyone. And if they don't want to do that, they should get out of the radio business. It's a dog eat dog world and they can't have everything handed to them.

i am not killing you, i am not doing anything to you personally. i am not even intrinsically "for" internet radio and "against" terrestrial radio. what i AM "for" is artist and listener freedom and what i AM "against" is the government's arbitrary curtailment of that freedom.

i am not what is taking listeners away from conventional radio. a natural market evolution that caters to niche interests via internet radio is what is taking them away...i am merely protesting an unjust law that would put an artificial end to that natural evolution.

basically, what i'm saying is...*I'M* not killing you. the market is. and if you can't handle that...you should do your show for free on myspace or get out of the radio business, right? you can't expect everything to be handed to you, and it is, after all, a dog eat dog world.

if the product that you offer is superior, the market will support it. if it's not, it won't. that's the way capitalism works, or should. the way it SHOULDN'T work is that the government steps in and rescues dinosaurs who refuse to change with fluxuating trends by placing arbitrary demands on the content providers who ARE willing to give consumers what they want.

i'm not telling people to listen to internet radio, man. people are doing that on their own. i simply wish to defend their right to do so.

Not to veer from your message too much, but I know a great internet radio show. Check out KGRL.fm. She plays the best all-female music out there!
