The following feature was conducted and posted by the MC7C duo. Editing by -Gabe-. Do NOT copy and paste this! Direct link to it! ...and now, Mister Dylan Tranchant, artist extraordinaire. DYLAN TRENCHANT was born March 1st, 1982 in Tuscon, Arizona, an only child to a single mother. At the age of 8, he moved to VB, VA. He grew up in a tense environment between parental conflicts and became a very spiritual individual, dabbling into interestts in all things supernatural and occult-related, including fascination in aliens, god(s), the universe and multi-dimensional transcendance. Dylan’s philisophy on life greatly reaffirmed when a drunk driver killed his sister and her best friend less than a month after he moved home from leaving the air force to be closer to family. His life fell apart and revealed many challenges that could only make him and his family stronger, as well as spiritual epiphanies within a month prior to the accident. At this point, Dylan feels it as his responsibility to make the most of everything before he dies... his artwork has changed a lot recently as a result, mirroring influences from artists such as Alex Grey.:INTERVIEW: How long have you been creating? What got you started doing art? Since I was one year old, I was taking crayons to my grandparents’ walls. According to my Mom, I was drawing before I could even stand. For as long as I remember, I was turning my thoughts out so that other people could see what was going on in my mind...the things that no words (at any age) could describe.Describe your work to someone who has never seen it before. I’m a little bit of a copy cat. if i see some aspect in someone else’s art, that is extremely and aesthetically pleasing, i copy and copy and copy until i find a way to incorporate it into my art work. right now, a lot of my stuff is about "K-holes," the color red, silhouettes, STRONG lighting and a LOT of outlines. What do you find visually stimulating right now? Any local artists that we need to keep an eye on?I remember snatching up kid’s drawing on the back of menus, when I was working at this one restaurant. I think if there’s one local artist(s) that I like, it would be the 3 year old kid losing him/ herself in the piece that he/ she’s creating on anything that they could get their hands on. What other artists or movements inform your work/aesthetics/sensibilities?I really liked seeing what Di Vinci was doing when he made the notes and the pictures all the same piece of work. to know what someone is thinking is amazing for any viewer. if there are artists that can give me an idea of what’s happening in and to their mind while in an artistic trance, then i love it no matter the "standard" of quality of the piece. If there were no financial limits whatsoever for you, what constraints would you most like to overstep? Are there other mediums you would explore?Animation is a big deal for me. I’m moving to DC so I can go to school for feature length animation (in all applications, including CGI). but if there was no financial barriers, I would create a "temple" of local art in every city, town, village, etc. so the next civilization (or visitors) admire true achievements made not with concrete and steel but within the mind itself. Did you grow up in Virginia? (If not, when / why did you move here?)I grew up in VA when a VB pilot married my Mom and moved us here from CA. I was lucky, however because all my best friends were as passionate and talented (if not more so) than me ; it really gave me purpose.Do you do gallery shows? If someone is trying to put me on display, I only hope that they like what they see. I never turn down an offer for an installation. What’s your favorite piece (at the moment)? Why?A little piece that i painted on wood called "LIMA." it took me over 5 years to complete and every couple of months, i would add to or change it a little bit at a time. it’s a living piece of art.The business side of being an artist: how do you market/promote yourself, and does it work? How do you cope?I don’t think that I’ve been very good at promoting myself, but all it takes is a person to tell their friend and so on, right? If it’s good, it will be seen ; it will promote itself. I guess it never hurts to get better, then. Let’s have some fun with word association. Give me your immediate feelings on the following (if you’ve got no discernable feelings, make something up that won’t embarrass you in the morning) Pembroke Area aka Downtown Virginia Beach- - VA beach wants people to come down from other states and admire it, but what good is it if it’s only a collage of national restaurants and establishments? promote VA BEACH with REAL VA BEACH people and ideas. If they don’t like it, they can go back to their crappy state. =) The Oceanfront- Truer and more relevant to what VA BEACH really is. Granby Street-I hope I’m not the only one who said this: THE JAFFE ART CENTER! Portfolio Weekly- faithful to it’s kin. Independent Music Stores / Businesses / Restaurants- rare Best Venue for art shows-haha, the woods! Best Kept Secret- Edgar Casey foundation! Pungo-eeesh, i don’t go there anymore because all the drunk drivers- sorry pungo! Favorite Dive Bar- cogan’s isn’t a dive is it? at least not on Tuesdays! What’s the most played song on your iPod (or an equivalent music playing device) in the past week? BlackBlock by MODESELKTOR!!!What came first, the art or the misery? Explain.I can’t make art in such a state of mind. even the grimmest of my worst in in pure state of consciousness :WEBLINKS:Myspace page (contains both Dylan’s music project and artwork!)
