(interview by MC7C. Do not use or copy/paste. If you do, you are a jerk and should probably jump off a cliff with man-eating alligators below just in case you don’t die on impact)

How long have you been creating? What got you started doing art?

D: I have done art on and off many times during my life. My high school art teacher Louise Lowenthal had a major impact on my art when I was in high school however I didn’t do anything with my art until 1994. Thats the year that I can say was a real starting point for me.

Describe your work to someone who has never seen it before.

D: thats a hard one. Well I like to use imagery that hopefully many people can identify with. I try to provide an image that will stick with you long after you have walked away from viewing it.

What do you find visually stimulating right now? Any local artists that we need to keep an eye on?

D: I do like looking at other artists work. There is so much art out there that I do like. Locally I do like what Michael Scott Younger is doing.

What other artists or movements inform your work/aesthetics/sensibilities?

I really like people who are doing their own thing and not necessarily following a popular trend. I like fluxus artists. Also look at Ray Johnson, he was doing his own thing, to him everything was art and he was totally original.

If there were no financial limits whatsoever for you, what constraints would you most like to overstep? Are there other mediums you would explore?

D: I would probably like to work perhaps in film or music or even both. Combine art, theater, and music.

Did you grow up in Virginia? (If not, when / why did you move here?)

D: I was born in Norfolk Virginia in 1960, moved to Pensacola Florida in 1964. I moved back to VB in 1975. I have lived in the area since then.

Do you do gallery shows?

D: I have done many gallery shows. I have done some local gallery shows and also some in Los Angeles.

What’s your favorite piece (at the moment)? Why?

D: I don’t really have any favorites.

The business side of being an artist: how do you market/promote yourself, and does it work? How do you cope?

D: Thats something that I really don’t expend a lot of energy on. I know many artist who do a lot of self promotion but thats something that compared to other artists I have sport of negated in many ways. I could do so much more to get myself out there but I haven’t for many reasons. I guess if you look at how much energy I have put in that area and some of the things that I have done I guess I haven’t done too bad.

Let’s have some fun with word association. Give me your immediate feelings on the following:

Pembroke Area aka Downtown Virginia Beach-

D: Downtown Virginia Beach???? 100 years too late.

The Oceanfront-

D: You can find me there when there is surf.

Granby Street-

D: I had a couple of cool art shows on Granby Street in the past. One at the Zeitgeist Gallery in 1995 and one last year 2007 at the Jaffe arts Center (JAC). The show, "Crashing Waves & Tidal Forcese", at the JAC had a 45 minute wait to get into the gallery. The Norfolk Police questioned people outside wanting to know why everyone was lined up outside.

Portfolio Weekly-

D: I read it when I get a chance. Alexis Waller a writer for the Portfolio did a nice article on my show last year. I also had a write up back in 1995 by Catherine Dorsey in the Portfolio.

Independent Music Stores / Businesses / Restaurants-

D: You have to love them. I really like Volume Music. I love great restaurants too. I used to love to go to the old Dumbwaiter restaurant in downtown Norfolk back in the day.

Best Venue for art shows-

D: I participated in the "Renewal" show at the Warehouse in Norfolk last year. It was a really good show. It was fun and the people there were really fabulous. There was a really good vibe at the show and in the people there. I plan on participating in the "Renewal" show again this year.

Best Kept Secret-

D: is between two people and only if one of them are dead.

Pungo-

D: I am related to a lot of people that live in and around Pungo. I roots run pretty deep there. No kidding. I spent many a summer vacation there at my grandmothers house in Pungo.

Favorite Dive Bar-

D: My favorites are either no longer there or they have changed over the years. Way back in the day I liked going to a place called the Cats Meow. It was a real dive that had live new wave and punk rock music. This was in the late 1970s early 1980s. Also during this time there was the Taj Mahal on Little Creek road in Norfolk. They had all the great punk bands coming from NYC or DC back then. It was a really cool place back then. I also really liked to hit the old Kings Head Inn too.

What’s the most played song on your iPod (or an equivalent music playing device) in the past week?

"No Ones Gonna Love You" by Band of Horses.

What came first, the art or the misery? Explain.

D: Probably the misery. The misery of being human and having to live and deal with the human experience. The art is the communication that is one human trying to connect with the rest of humanity.
