Read on, brothers and sisters... :INTERVIEW:How long have you been creating? My whole life. I have always been drawn to color texture and pattern. What got you started doing art? When I was a kid I would go to my sister Lisa's art shows and I always remember thinking "I want to be a part of this when I grow up". Soon after that I started stealing her paints.Describe your work to someone who has never seen it before.Tattoo inspired contemporary quilt art. What do you find visually stimulating right now? Spring, I love this time of year when everything is fresh and new and full of color.Any local artists that we need to keep an eye on? Painter Bill Harris and everybody else at Libertytown Arts Center and of course Kenny Brown and Chance Kenyon down at Tattoo Revival What other artists or movements inform your work/aesthetics/sensibilities? I am influenced by just about everyone I meet... too many to list. My personal favorites are always quilters from the past, the things these women created entirely by hand is mind blowing. If there were no financial limits whatsoever for you, what constraints would you most like to overstep? I try not to focus on limitations so this is a hard question to answer. I would say my priorities are space and efficiency...so if I had unlimited funds I would rent a real studio space at Libertytown and hire a few employees to help tie up loose ends.... and iron... I hate ironing =)Are there other mediums you would explore? I work in other mediums all the time but as for my career textiles is the only way to go. I am a fabric addict!Did you grow up in Virginia? I lived in VA off and on for almost 20 years but at heart I still think of myself as a barefoot hillbilly from VT. Do you do gallery shows? Yes off and on when I can find the time. What's your favorite piece (at the moment)? Our Lady of Guadalupe, the whole piece just came together so nicely. She'll be my favorite for about 3 more weeks until I finish the next one =)The business side of being an artist: how do you market/promote yourself, and does it work? I market myself every chance I get, whether it be a tattoo convention, craft show, magazine article or online. I also love to participate in charity and community events. But the best has always been word of mouth. I don't have to much trouble coping... I have been working in the fast paced tattoo industry for a long time so I have always had a very good understanding of what it takes to succeed as a professional artist. Organization, flexibility, focus and most importantly PATIENCE! Let's have some fun with word association.
