Dear Friends of The George Tavern

SAVE THE GEORGE TAVERN -- AMY WINEHOUSE STARTS CAMPAIGN

The George Tavern has been trying to negotiate with Swan Housing who are seeking planning permission to build 11 "affordable" flats on the site of Stepney's nightclub and attached to this listed Georgian building.

Unfortunately Swan have put an application into Tower Hamlets before negotiations have concluded and The George Tavern is left with no option but to object.

We have until the 4th February.

The main issues include:
- The George Tavern is the best music, performance and arts venue in the east end.
- It draws talent from all over the UK, Europe and beyond.
- PLUS as a beacon right in the middle of one of the biggest creative communities in the world (east London has more artists and musicians than almost anywhere -- running into tens of thousands) The George Tavern gives local residents opportunities to perform. exhibit and enjoy this wealth of creativity.
- ALL these activities rely on licenses. Residential development attached or next to The George Tavern put these licenses at risk.
- The George Tavern is a huge asset to Tower Hamlets and should not be put at risk for just 11 flats.

We have tried to flag these important issues with council members and officers with very little response.

So, now we are left with no choice but to make our voice heard. We are calling on all our friends to help us Save The George Tavern -- and first to put her name to the campaign is Amy Winehouse.

Amy is now a resident of Bow.

We are asking more famous friends of The George Tavern to join in and we will keep you informed.

WE NEED YOU TOO!!!!

Please support us.

Please write in objection to this current planning application and in principle to any residential development attached or next to The George Tavern.

And please come and enjoy some of our current events.

Thank you for taking the time to read about our concerns -- we are sincerely worried about the future of the area we live in.

I hope you can help.

Hi Pauline,

I am writing an email to Tower Hamlets and I just wanted to know how many years there has been a pub on the site, just to highlight the fact that it is a point of cultural import both historically and presently. I'd like a T-Shirt too, I don't know how much good it will do wearing it in Paris, but I could wear it for any shows we have coming up in London? Let me know if it seems worth getting one to me.
Hope things are looking up. I'm sure it'll be okay, you always seem to get through the post difficult times, it'll take more than 11 flats to stand in your way!

Let me know if there is anything I can do to help.

I'm writing too! Theres a few of us who regularly travel from the Shires outside London to enjoy the atmosphere and music of your amazing pub. And if all else fails, I'll have to inquire about one of these 'affordable" flats as I think of no better place than to live than next door.... See you at the weekend..:)

I'm behind you all the way - The George has been such a artistic haven to me personally in its undying tradition it serves as a halfway house still - half a place to drink and unwind far from the madding crowd, and half a place to take action, perform, create, GoMAD igniting little flames that draw crowds week after week of the like minds and the curious from all over.

SAVE THE GEORGE TAVERN = Not just any old drinking den
