SIDS Solved?
The Rest of the Story

Dr. Davis has written an exciting not yet published book called SIDS Solved?: The Rest of the Story which details his experience since coming upon the "Accidental Poisoning Explanation" for unexplained infant deaths. The following is the introduction to the book. We will also be happy to send you the first chapter of this book for free when you subscribe to the CribLife2000.Com newsletter!

Introduction

My name is Dr. D. Denton Davis. I am a practicing Emergency Room physician with over thirty years of experience in clinical medicine. This story is about the Sudden Infant Death Syndrome, or SIDS as it is more commonly called. I have chosen the title "SIDS Solved," because I believe that a plausible explanation has arisen from research that has taken place in Great Britain and New Zealand over the past ten years. The additional by-line "the rest of the story" will be recognized by most readers, who are familiar with Paul Harvey and his news broadcast. I believe, as a physician, there is information available concerning the unexplained Infant deaths, which is extremely important, especially now, for parents to know. The recent change in the policy regarding SIDS by the American Academy of Pediatrics is a tremendous concern, because SIDS especially over the age of six months is now considered suffocation with a soft object until and if proven otherwise. This explanation is powerful, controversial and simple. The proof of this explanation may become the difference between guilt and innocence. It should not be taken lightly. Unfortunately there has been a well-coordinated effort to keep this story out of the literature and away from the media, however it deserves to be told. Ultimately readers, after hearing the "rest of this story" will be able to make their own judgments.

Readers may also come to the realization that this is a story within a story-one that will play out through what I have seen and heard over the past four years. I believe that my story about the people the reader will learn about and their explanation for unexplained infant deaths will become a beginning, not an end to this evolving story.

Invariably the unexplained infant death story is the same; a lifeless baby is found, usually after being put down to sleep on some form of a mattress, and is rushed to an emergency room, where people like me attempt, but are unsuccessful in restoring a heartbeat or breathing. After so many years in this traumatic environment, I have become all too familiar with these deaths and the grief of the frantic parents.

Sadly, thousands of babies continue to die each year in the United States in spite of all the research that has been done and the risk factor warnings that have been issued. This story will be about all the babies who will not benefit from "face up sleeping" and the reasons why.

Recently, and quite by accident, I uncovered and have investigated a profound and what I believe to be a critically important, previously unreported story from England and New Zealand. This story reveals how two consulting scientists, one in England and one in New Zealand, together with a British businessman, appear to have identified the a possible cause of unexplained infant deaths. Not just a new risk factor, but rather the possible cause.

The simple facts are these; chemical compounds containing phosphorus, arsenic and antimony, which have been added to a baby's crib environment since the early 1950's, appear to play the major role and therefore represent a significant continuing danger to infants. This research has demonstrated that if a baby's mattress contains any of these elements, which can usually be found in polyvinyl chloride (PVC), a common mold or mildew can interact with them, creating intensely poisonous gases. These gases are particularly dangerous for babies, especially those under the age of 6 months.

A plausible explanation, as well as a solution has resulted from studies conducted by these gentlemen. A simple cover made from polyethylene, which contains no dangerous chemicals, placed over a baby's existing mattress appears to have already protected over 100,000 babies. Preventing poisonous gases generated by fungal microorganisms consuming chemicals within a mattress from reaching a baby is the reason.

Since late 1994 saturation publicity about this protective covering has been provided throughout New Zealand by means of newspapers, magazines, TV, radio, public addresses, innumerable letters and with the support of baby care professionals. In addition, a book titled The Cot Death Cover-up? which this present book is partially based upon, has been published in both New Zealand and Britain. This has given parents in those countries the facts and enabled them to take the protective step of covering their baby's bassinet and crib mattresses.

The protective covering is made from a simple high grade, thick, non-permeable polyethylene material, which is used to wrap the mattress, or in the form of a slip-on cover, which was designed and manufactured in New Zealand to fit over various sized crib mattresses. The mattress cover currently being marketed in New Zealand and some other countries was developed by a chemist. To date, six years later, not a single baby sleeping on a polyethylene protected mattress, which has been properly wrapped to specifications, has died from unexplained reasons in either England or New Zealand. Yet during this same six-year period about 475 babies in New Zealand alone, who were on standard mattresses have died. . The statistical conclusion from these facts is that the lives of many babies appear to have been saved and continue to be saved in New Zealand, while further unrelated research is being conducted throughout the World.

Based on this experience, and the wealth of scientific research which went into this discovery, it would be quite wrong not to make the facts known to all parents, especially those in North America where unexplained deaths possibly wrongly being attributed to "suffocation with a soft object have claimed so many lives and will continue to do so, if dangerous chemicals are allowed in baby products.

For additional valuable information, please continue to read this book. I believe you will at first become shocked, and then very angry, at what you will learn because definite attempts have been made to suppress this story and to keep this information from you, the public, and especially you the parents of infants who remain in danger.

Information can be found at www.criblife2000.com which is far more comprehensive. Controversy has already been created by this book and this web site, but I do not believe that I have underestimated the interest or the intelligence of parents or their ability to decide what is best for their own children. As a consequence, this book includes both the practical and technical information, which will explain the environmental scientific basis for this horror.

Critics may claim that much of this material is anecdotal, but no one can afford to ignore the letters from the many parents, who have written thank you notes to the three-man team, which made this discovery. It should be noted that none of these gentlemen were funded in any way, either for their research, time, or incidental costs in their ten year campaign to convey their findings and advice to parents everywhere in the world. Critics must also attempt to dismiss scientific evidence that mattresses contaminated with chemicals and mildew are potentially deadly.

This introduction would be incomplete if I did not include one example of the success of their work.

"Our baby son had serious breathing difficulties and we had a breathing monitor. The alarm was being triggered six to seven times a night, indicating that our son Jake had stopped breathing. Every time this happened we would rush to pick him up from his crib and take him to another room, praying as we provided stimulation. After becoming aware of this accidental poisoning explanation, we followed directions and covered Jake's mattress with a polyethylene mattress cover. The alarm never went off again and there were no more "near misses." Is it possible that at least in this case the monitor served a useful purpose?

If after reading this book any readers are uncertain that there is sufficient evidence of the likely correlation between crib mattresses, mildew, phosphorus, arsenic and antimony, they are advised to follow their own intuition keeping in mind that no harm can result from protecting a baby from these dangerous substances. As a messenger I will attempt to build links with all organizations concerned with infant morbidity and mortality by pointing out the basic fact that every mattress containing chemical compounds and mildew is "dirty." No baby, therefore deserves to sleep on a "dirty" mattress.

Did you read this part?

Sharing the parent’s bed is more dangerous than a crib for a baby, because all mattresses are potentially dangerous. Parent’s beds are more likely to have gas-producing mildew than a baby’s crib.

I am not sure where I read it, but I read somewhere that co-sleeping babies actually have a lower risk of SIDS, the study said they thought that it was because babies mimicked the parents breathing pattern and therefore were more likely to maintain a regular breathing pattern. However, that study would coincide with this one, because most adult matresses would not have the polyplastic covering on it...there are not as many adult "pee-pee" matresses...

You can just as easily put a cover over the parents bed. I definately support co sleeping. It is just good to have whatever info is available.

Awesome! LOL, Ethan has not been in his crib yet. He has enjoyed laying with Mommy and other family members.

WOW. Thanks for posting this blog! I pasted a link to it on my pregnancy site, and told all of my friends about it and encouraged them to read it, especially following the loss of a friend's 7 week old son to SIDS. Seemingly such a simple solution to a terrible problem!
