Who Gives Kudos:

Wednesday, September 13, 2006

My name is Kevin. I'll be writing and posting codes for your MySpace profile and beyond, and describing how the code works, on this page and in the O'Reilly Do It Yourself Codes MySpace group. First we'll start out with simple profile customization options, then we'll work toward more complex codes.

You'll be able to use what's posted here in two ways: you can take the code and use it (it's all free); or you can use the code and also learn about what's behind the code, that is, learn how the code was designed and developed. If you choose the second course, you'll very soon be able to make you own codes (which I hope you'll share with us here in the form of comments and in our code groups and forums).

I'm working with O'Reilly Media in creating this site and all the code presented here. O'Reilly is a major publisher of computer and technology books. They've provided me with the books shown on the left, and I'll be referring to them as I come up with new codes that I hope many MySpace people will find to be fun and interesting.

As for my professional and personal info: I am a software development professional and technology writer. My wife and I wrote what we think was the first published book about MySpace.com ("MySpace Safety: 51 Tips for Teens and Parents"). She goes by the name "Lady of Avalon" in the MySpace realm (you can find her in my friend list).

We have two children, both in college now, both very active online. I created my daughter's MySpace account long before MySpace became famous, after she discovered it as a place on the Net where aspiring songwriters and musicians could post their material. For some super original music written by an up and coming young pianist/singer/songwriter (tracks that may have been recorded and mixed by me in our home music studio), click on Kala in my friend list. My son is an avid online gamer, but doesn't seem to care that much about MySpace.

I really hope you enjoy the code I provide here (with the assistance of the authors of the books, since I'll often be quoting their example codes, or using them as my starting point). Friend me and subscribe to my blog if you're interested in codes for your MySpace profile, and especially if you're interested in learning about how to write your own code, for MySpace, for other web sites, for creating games, whatever. Writing your own code really is the only way to get exactly what you want.

If there's something you'd like to see, or if you have a question about code and MySpace or about anything I've presented here, feel free to post a comment or send an email. I'm sure that if you're wondering about something, someone else is too! What we focus on in this profile is going to be determined by what people are interested in. So do let me know what interests you!

Oh good formal introductions! YAY!

Curious, how long have you been hiding around here?

I have been on myspace.com for over two years. I dont recall every seeing you around and I have always hung out in the coder relms. Actually I own one of the oldest myspace coder groups. Its been hacked and attacked but we always come back. =)

I also have two daughters. My oldest is almost 20 and the youngest is 15. My oldest daughter has an account number even lower then mine. She turned me onto myspace. She doesnt do much on here anymore but she has always created her own profiles. I dont allow my 15 year old on here a lot, she has no business hangoing out here. Although she does create profiles for some fan profiles, for people who are into the same shows she likes.

I spent the first almost year here as a moderator but later there was a conflict of interest since I also produced the first myspace skinnable flash mp3 player. Well duh my decision between modding and programming was easy to make. DOH! =) Others were beginning to have the same problem since they were beginning to create profiles for bands and business's which were coming onto myspace for the first time. And of course since they charged for thier services, this was considered a conflict of interest.

My husband also has an account, it is called ironically the PIMP which stood for the "Principal Internet MP3 Player". My youngest daughter actually came up with the name. He doesnt care for the myspace environment, but he loves to create gadgets for myspace users to use. And we of course make these available on profilejewels.net. For the most part we program in Flash because we can make just about anything work here within myspace with flash. We have since created things such as the weather by city you live in, horoscopes, mp3 players, day in history, amber alert, sports flash feed, and more.

Of course we are very famiular with the name O'Reily. Who in thier right mind isn't. Thats great that you are working with them to create a technical manual for coding myspace. I would think that would be a lot of fun. Oh not for me of course unless someone would want to spend just as long cleaning up the spelling error and grammer errors as it took to write. =)

So how long did you say you have been around here hiding?
