Current mood:  distractable
at last i get around to putting up some new music - here is the track i have recorded with the unbending trees, called overture. it will be released on strange feeling as a digital single on 29th september, and the album "chemically happy (is the new sad)" will be out on october 6th, and you really can't be without it. no, seriously, you can't.
meanwhile, progress on my new album consists of me having had dinner with ewan pearson! hurrah! we did manage to at least have a conversation about the next bit of recording, which will happen in the autumn, and by then things will be really taking shape.
and also this week i am meeting up with jens lekman, to do something or other. there will be a guitar, and a mic, and jens with his laptop, and who knows what may come of it. a number one single possibly. or an obscure b-side. you don't really have b-sides nowadays do you. pity really, they were always our best tracks.

Wow...reading about you and Jens Lekman... How wonderful! I love his music! And you have the best voice in the world - so the result must be a number one single for sure. Tell him I still need his approval for the filmed concert footage we did in Berlin together...:-)

much love

Nice birthday hint from Ant there...! Have been enjoying "Overture" regularly for a couple of weeks now... Kristof posted it on the The 'Trees MySpace page a couple of weeks back (keep up T!) also courtesy of Mr G. Coe Esq and those lovely people at BBC 6 Music... Shall put release dates (and Ant's birthday) in diary accordingly...

Mandatory random question:

P.S. Why the picture of a birdie (finch of some description?) posted against "Hunter Gets Captured..."

Will eagerly await musical output of Jens Lekman meeting, do try & record something and not just "do lunch"! ;-)

Bring back B-Sides! They were always so exciting weren't they, 'cos you never knew what you'd get (unlike the A-Side, which, by definition you'd bought because you liked it...). Smoke & Mirrors, Book of Love anyone...!?

Oh god, another blog reply longer than the original blog, sorry...

Mick.

Overture is really lovely; great chords and great to hear you over piano and strings again. It reminds me of a David Sylvian song. Not sure if it's ever crossed your mind, but you and Sylvian would sound utterly astonishing together.

Love the new Overture and everything, but the elephant in the room in that song is that it is perfect for a LIVE PERFORMANCE DUET, which is the real thing we can't, as you say 'be without'!

Hey Tracey,

I just wanted to let you know how thankful I am for your music. Rollercoaster changed my life many years ago and I needed it again recently to get me through some tough times. I love how life happens that way. Keep making great music.

Tracey,

Great track, and you have had some fab b-sides, the one that always sticks in my mind was the one from "Night and Day" ( now that's a long time ago) was "On my mind"

take care

too funny! yes all hail the b-side - couldn't agree more. you get rid of vinyl (for the most part) and cd singles (also, for the most part) and all the gems that weren't deemed 'commercial' enough get forgotten. pity. i couldn't image a world without no 'louder than bombs' my favorite smiths work or 'more pink' (one of tori amos' finest offerings ever, equal if not better than 'under the pink') I heard the trees track a while back on their page and love it. simply beautiful tracey, as always! also, the albums title may be one of the best in years...
well, autumns right around the corner so i hope you and ewan are devising another classic. can't wait.

best~astor

The collaboration with The Unbending Trees was a perfect match. What a gorgeous, melancholy song with great lyrics! Good to hear about Jens Lekman too! I find "overture" sort of similar to something David Sylvian would have put on his Secrets of the Beehive record, and that's a compliment of course. Can't wait to hear more from you...

Your vocal on working weeks Venceremos - We Will Win (12") was great, if you can count that as a b-side to the album version?? It was released as the a-side single wasn't it? I have without luck been trying the get that on cd/digital for years! As for other b-side gems, On my mind is a close second and your russian 1985 ep (with ben singing 'Don't you go') come's third.
Looking forward to the new stuff!! ;-)

dear tracey,

if you are currently in berlin, i would love to show you around a little. if you are in the mood of singing, then i do not believe you will find anybody around here who would be able to sing along every single song you have ever made like i do. i mean it, contact me via myspace and let's hit the town.

It's a beautiful song, tracey, has an Autumn/back-to-school (!) feeling about it. A bit Weimar Republic-esque - lots of slowed down film and women with bobs.

B-sides. I think Draining the Bar was probably my fave. Though I downloaded goodbye joe a while back and always like the sound of.. well, is it the tape speeding up or summat at the end cos the guitars go 'geeuuururrrhup' at the end?

Are there still No1 singles? HMV have stopped doing any kind of chart - which is very democratic of them.
But I can still remember the highest placing of my favourite records, including some of yours, and can't help feeling that the youf are being denied a key pleasure in life!

my fav b - side of yours would be '' on my mind '' from the 12 inch night and day , i brought it along with virgina
astley ' from the gardens where we feel secure ' from rough trade , i pretty sure that summer we caught rip rig and panic at the carnival that year too . talking of b- sides would you ever cover 'bachelor kisses' by the go - betweens ? its one of my favourite tracks of theirs . happy slow recording .

No, don't panic! I meant it was a GoBs b side from one of the singles from Tallulah:

"Was There Anything I Could Do?"/"Rock And Roll Friend" (plus "Mexican Postcard", 12" only) (Beggars Banquet (UK), Mushroom (Aus), October 1988) [wikipedia, ta.
]

I'm ashamed to say I've never heard R&RF - I could have heard your version at various gigs but who knows! If you have a version somewhere will you post it, we'd love to hear it.

I always liked that link between you and them - e.g. Blue Moon Rose, Apology Accepted (one of the greatest songs ever? Another sign of the greatness of three chord songs) - and I still listen to their three great late 80s albums. Pure gold.

Tracy you have done it again. Overture, so melancholy, reminds me of the times when i used to listen to walking wounded endlessly whilst lying on my bed and looking into the sky, comparing the different clouds go by. Beautiful.

Tracey - Overture is just amazing, and I'll be a-buyin' the album. This conversation of B-Sides has really got me thinking... I was particularly fond of the EBTG tracks from the US 'Those Early Days' maxi-CD 'Another Day, Another Dollar' and 'Dyed in the Grain' - I can still hear you singing that line 'I love you too much, yeah...' and there was something about it that just floated away so wistfully... Good times, mate, good times. Waiting eagerly for the notes on the recording session. Also - the bits about Jens is great to read... he's something of a local hero around these parts (New England US), and he speaks to the audience as if he were talking to each of them as friends - seriously! He'd better show as a guest on your tour following the new album (not so subtle hint to see you on the road again.
)
