Current mood:  sad

Last Jan, something unfortunate happened. Most of my tour gear was stolen. We have yet to find any of it, but we haven't stopped looking or following up on any leads. You can find a list of items on my film profile. (/thisbinaryuniverse)

You have all been extremely supportive and helpful and I can't thank you enough!

If you find any equipment or any leads, please do not approach the person or establishment, call the police or send a message here.

Thanks!

:)

Your positivism during this arduous time and transformation of an obstruction into a growth catalyst for the further promotion of art is remarkable. Sincere wishes for the secure return of your equipment.

Greetings from the land down under,

Thats terrible :(
I hope the fuckers get attacked by a flock of rabid seagulls, which will then draw attention from other people, which will eventually lead to you getting all your music and gear back.

But from destruction/chaos comes a new creation. Your idea is very intriguing. Having such a service online would be a great way to stop thieves from re-selling stolen equipment. Of course you would have to think about all the ways that someone could mis-use the system and have mechanisms against it, but all in all I think that it is a great idea.

My God Brian, this is insane. I just spent the last few hours researching your mathematical work on TBU and then decieded to check the MySpace. After seeing you live in the "haunted" State Theatre (you had to borrow my pick at the end you bum!)  and digging deeper into what you put into these pieces, I know that the people responsible for this could not possible understand the worth and function behind what they have taken. If your belongings are not returned or discovered, I would suggest you start checking research labs! And that is only partially in jest. While it would take a crew of bespectacled madmen in lab coats to decipher your brand of scientific aural exploration, I fear that your upcoming software releases could have posed some type of threat to others in the industry. I honestly would hope this is the fault of vandals rather than corporate espionage, but my experience in information security would make me at least consider the possibility. I will send you a few suggestions for tracking your digital assets in a private message. If anyone doesn't deserve this it's you. You have been so generous with your time and knowledge. Best of luck.

Some years ago I had some gear stolen, the street value was not much (old kawai gear, etc) and kept interest away in finding it, but the years and amount of programming I put in were irreplaceable. Two years later, a synth showed up on craigslist, but by that time, I had moved so many times that I had lost the police report, and there was no way I could recover the synth. The best I could do was warn others with a posting that it was stolen gear.

I would love to see some kind of RFID based system evolve. Smilar to our pets, it would definately place a unique signature in the instrument, and your average idiot street thief wouldnt know where to look. Unfortunately 'chipping' it would involve opening a case and probably violating the warranty of the instrument, but i'm sure with the right people, a legal method could be worked out.

Best of luck in finding your gear. I wish I could help (not for the money or service, but to ensure your music continues to evolve).

3 times in 5 years, that is sad. :-( geez. But I'm sure you think it's only gear, that doesn't make the person you are after all, although I hope you'll find it quickly!

+1 for the gear list
+1 Zillion for the needy help...

...but you're living in the US, unfortunately a lot of american people are way too focused on being lazy sheep at work. Just as bad as in some european countries like mine!

Truly sucky, I really hope you recover as much as possible. I can't even begin to imagine what it would be like to lose my gear. Kudos for your altruistic intent with the non-profit too, if I am in a position to support it I will. Make sure you post an event or similar notification on myspace so people will be informed.  Best of luck!

Brian, I'm just wondering if you came to the 'law of attraction' yourself or if you saw/read 'the Secret'? You do stay amazingly positive & it WILL work for you. In fact, on some level you believe your reaction will help people which may be why the unfortunate part of the situation manifested. What you feel inside of you will come into existence... So, where do you see this going? You have the answers. I see you continuing to do great good!

Will...i am?

Wow, man.  I've had things stolen from me, and equipment is one thing, but when some of that equipment includes hours upon hours of creative work...that's another monster entirely.  I'll echo the "sorry"s and regrets of others that have commented as well...the ugliness of human greed never ceases to astound me.

I also, though, am with you on your ideas.  I like the idea of "thumbprinting"--we need more "checks" like this.  Also, I'm very happy to hear of an idea to help out those that have the creative vision/ability to do great things, but lack the funding and/or equipment to do so.  I sincerely hope that both of these ideas come to full fruition.

I truly appreciate and respect you as an artist...and thanks for keeping it as positive as you can.

God Bless.

Hello

That is a Horrible traumatical thing that happend, I hope you get your equipment back. I wanted to mention I am a IT Proffesion in Miami Florida, so I have to prepare myself deal with disasters recovery plans like, or if somebody sabataged/stole/blowtorched my datacent or if a Huricane slammed into it, I have to have a  Data contengency plans. I set up a VB script, which backed up all my servers at my company to back them up to Tape drives, and I send the tapes to offsite locations.

In your case scenerio

#3 MacPro 2.3 GHZ, with the 10K RPM Rapters, Which I hope those Hard Drives were Mirrored, them and were not striped.

However with that missing the data loss you are going through. However equipment can be redeemed through  insurance plan, however data in your case MUSIC/ART is not recoverable unless it was backed up. If it was not backed up the only way to redeem the data back is to actually get those Hard Drives back.

I wanted to say good luck with getting your equipment back.

BT,

So sorry about your loss. =^(

I am perplexed as to why someone would stoop so low to do something like this.

Frankly, this sounds like an "inside job". I would start looking to who had access to your studio, and at what times during the last 6 months.

Also, consider hiring a Private Investigator. You might be able to cover more ground that way.

Good luck with recovering your priceless gear.

DON'T LET THIS AFFECT YOUR ABILITY TO CONTINUE TO MAKE GROUND-BREAKING AND INFLUENTIAL MUSIC.

Peace,

ALAJ

The Musical: Matthew C Overlan

This news is heart breaking.

Having myself lost to theft a guitar that had been my partner in musical discovery since the age of 16, I realize how distressing this must be.  The objects we create with are by nature worth infinitely more to us than their material value.

What this criminal probably didn't realize is that his act, by delivering a severe setback to your creative output, also robbed millions of the inspiration and enlightenment we derive from your music.

Best of luck in your recovery efforts, my eyes are open.

Low Frequency Abduction®

...Lost for words...

I remember from a few years ago that this is not the first time that such a terrible thing has happened to you. To be in that kind of a situation once is bad enough, but to have it happen to you twice is seriously disturbing. How you manage (at the end of your text) to still sound almost forgiving, is beyond me. You really have a special kind of outlook and for one who gives so much to people in the form of your music, it is sad that there are those out there wishing to take from you in such an unpleasing manner.

I hope this situation finds a resolve. As an electronic music maker myself, I know I would find it almost impossible to cope with, as I would feel as if they had taken part of me along with the equipment.

Regards from the UK.

Yow. I have to think that somebody knew about that stuff somehow, and it wasn't random--and that they had some idea of the creative content they were taking not just the equipment.

I have a suggestion going forward: put together a disaster recovery plan. Seriously. A lot of small to mid size companies in the Twin Towers went bankrupt after 9/11 even if all their people got out because they did not have any offsite backup storage etc. etc. Your next computer rig should include a medium size tape backup unit, Apple can help you get one that will handle what you do. Very simple, have somebody set it up to do a full backup once a week, and incrementals every night. Then you take the tapes to a safety deposit box or something. It can save you if you have a hard drive failure, much less if you get ripped off like that.

As I get older, the more certain I get that the kind of fame people get in the entertainment industry has as many downfalls as rewards. There are a lot of psychos out there and money and/or fame draw them like flies to shit.

You have built up a lot of good karma in the world, and like people say after they get wiped out by a tornado, it was just stuff, and you are still alive. Hopefully the wheel will turn and all that karma will manifest.

Ron
