140 characters works for some things. Sometimes you need more space. I would like to address the spin factories around the world. Over the last week my posts on twitter have received a lot of attention. I have not begged or pulled or asked for any of it. Let me set a few facts straight.

1) I do not think that going off on my neighbor was a horribly offensive thing to do. I have been woken up every morning for the last four months by hammering and construction on a structure that is very close to our property line after being told the land was being purchased to build a park. Yes, there may have been a more diplomatic way to do it and maybe broadcasting it for the net wasn't the wisest choice. My father is a contractor my step father is a contractor. I grew up hiking shingles to the roof of houses and driving nails at 7 am for a living. I have absolute compassion and understanding for the workers. I do however have a job that sometimes forces me to work into the night (sometimes the movie business requires that) and occasionally I like to sleep past 7 am. Yes I live a very fortunate life and for that I am very greatful, I do however work for a living. I have a family that I support and a company that I run daily. And I cherish the 4 to 6 hours that I sleep a day.
2) I didn't "chuck beverages" at the construction workers. They were very happy to see us and laughing at the whole ordeal. I asked them if they wanted something to drink and they said yes. I thought that it would be a nice gesture. I am sorry if some found this offensive. But I know that the workers loved it.
3) I don't feel that my distain for the unwarranted attack on my step daughters by a blogger I will not name is out of line at all.
4) I don't smoke marijuana and any statement to the contrary is a lie. I simply feel that Michael Phelps is entitled to his privacy. The kid made a mistake (he is only human) and anyone who has been in the public eye knows the magnification of minor missteps can be blown way out of proportion. Yes he is a role model and a great one at that. But I'm sure that in his lapse of judgment he wasn't thinking, "boy I hope the whole world can see this so that kids everywhere can copy me." And truth be told, if they went out and trained and worked as hard as he has to reach the great heights of success in their careers I wouldn't hammer them about a slip up either. And in kind I would like to retract any negative statement that I made about the kid who published the pic. I'm sure he/she wasn't in a sober head space while taking it or publishing it for that matter (you are the company you keep). I leave perfection to the creator of this great universe and wouldn't assume that duty on any human being.
5) I find it exceedingly disappointing that the press coverage of my wife and my blog posts have not included the philanthropic pursuits that we have adopted and encourage. Our intention in becoming more active on the web has been with the effort to connect to the community in an effort to create a greater bond with the amazing fans that we have adopted over several years. We are sharing our lives our thought our ideas and yes our faults with the hope of using connectivity and oneness to build a greater unity and take down the walls that divide us. We have dedicated ourselves to building a coalition to abolish 21st century slavery and are smart enough to know that we can't do it alone. But truth be told we are having fun connecting with people and if we are to be defamed for doing so, so be it. We aren't publishing news. We are sharing with a community of people that are sharing back with us. So I only ask that you don't take our conversation out of context and please stop printing half truths in the media so as to drive up your user consumption and sell more ads on the content that you claim to be news.

Ps. US weekly my 15 minutes of fame has lasted 10 years I think we can quit using that line now.

twitter nation. you rock. ak

Mr. Kutcher, depending on where you live at the time determins what kind of laws you have in support of your peace. The CA Penal Code section 415 (Disturbing the peace) does not have a time frame as to what time of the day you can or cannot make noise. It simply states that if you are disturbed it is illegal. Now a general rule for noise complaints is from 10 pm until 8 am.....T. Stidam

some people are too quick to judge. always have been and always will be. in reality, it's sometimes hard not to since junk is put in our face all of the time. the media wants us to side with them and their influence is so great that i feel sorry for their victims. i'm gonna keep faith in those who have their own minds and the capacity to hear all sides of the story before they judge..

It amazes me that "celebrities" are so rarely viewed as working PEOPLE...just like the rest of us!!! The difference being you are constantly having your privacy invaded with cameras!! As a professional photographer ( and Human) I respect people's privacy...and wish others would do the same!! My life is not on display..I don't work in the same field as you, and no matter what we do in life there will always be someone out there attempting to rain on our parade. The ones who do this need to get a life and spend less time attempting to make a name for themselves at the expense of others... Michael Phelps...people need to mind their OWN business, and stop taking other people's inventory!!! AS IF...any one of us is SO PERFECT that we have any right to cast stones and shadows on others...just plain despicable.. recommendation....ear plugs...I depend on them!!!! Keep up the great work...you and your family are an inspiration to many!!! And,OH MY GOD....You're REAL PEOPLE...with LIVES outside of the television and movie screen!!! SEEMS that should be BREAKING NEWS for many!!!

Ok you would have to be really narrow minded to think how you think. Two things.....1. The difference being, they get payed millions for doing the most stupid things, and if you get payed that much then what else do you expect?..2. Michael Phelps, he is ADHD and the use of canabis on ADHD people has a double effect as on a normal person, it also destroyes brain tissue 4 times faster than a non ADHD person, so its killing him alot more than a normal person, and he is a icon for young swimmers around the world, and if he expects peoples support then why would you go and do something just so plain illegal like that? And thats unlike Ashton whos only real achievement is having some good looks. (or so say the shallow, materialistic bitches in out society today) You should think of the REAL reason why these people are being watched non stop, and STOP thinking everybody is as innocent as you and me.

Hey dude. Listen, I understand what you mean COMPLETELY. It just sucks you have to explain yourself on here so it gets out to other people who believe the trash in the media. I think it's awesome you use twitter (found you because I'm a fan on @kevinrose) and I think it DOES cut out the middleman. It connects you with people but some people (mostly the tabs) turn it into something it's not. The only thing I would say is KEEP DOING what your doing and connect. Forget all the crap the media throws it you and says. I think WE ALL KNOW the real truth. The ones that believe it or hate you for being real and open, they are not real people anyways and need to open their eyes. P.S. I really wasn't a fan of you until I saw the real you on twitter. It showed me the real Ashton without the lens. You seem like a awesome dude and I will for sure be following what you do from now on. Look forward to the next sundance comp. too. I commented to you on twitter and you responded to me. I thought it was great but has a lot of bugs to workout. As a Comm. and Marketing Major, I can tell you it could be huge if done right. You already know that though I'm sure! :) Peace out my man. I never post comments or read posts on myspace but glad I did this one. http://twitter.com/mrbradg

Again, you've put the haters in their place, and rightfully so! Well Said! ..1The media is out there looking for drama, any kind- making small things into one big deal. When my neighbor is mowing his lawn in the summer at 7:30am that ticks me off. my kids and i do not need an alarm wake up call! When my neighbor is blaring his music in his car at 11:30pm and wakes up my twins who i spent forever trying to put them asleep- that ticks me off. We all get ticked off, that was your way to vent, so be it. whats the big deal? it was justblown out of porportion...2 it was quite obvious the workers were enjoying it. you can throw a vitamin water at me anytime lol..3. i agree that 'that one blogger' is a loser. im thinking that his hating and attacking other individuals in his mind is supposed to make him feel better about himself? your step daughters are all beautiful! ..4 i also agree about michael phelps issue. hes human, he makes mistakes. he was caught on camera making a mistake, but its not like thats who he is. hes an olympic athlete, someone to look up to. and besides its not like these people making a big deal out of the issue are perfect and neither are their kids. how do they know their own children arent out doing this too?..5 i love that you and demi are on twitter. you two are one of my favorite couples! now follow me on twitter please!! =]~ my username is YasmineO

Well said. And as for #4, only this crazy bizarro "Conservative Christian/Family Values" society would one photo with a bong invalidate years of training and dedication and the outstanding accomplishments Michael Phelps has achieved over a lifetime. Like Don Henley so wisely penned, folks do love their dirty laundry - and the only thing they like better than raising someone up onto a pedestal is watching them fall off of it. Nutty. As for the bloodthirsty media, there are two basic types of people in this world. People who do what their heart leads them to do, and people so miserly they must poke fun at such. Follow your heart. You're doing great. :)

Yeah, I was a little surprised at all the coverage your rant on your neighbors got, gotta love the media though..they seem to be able to sniff out the "important" news. (a little eye-rolling here) Anyway, the world will always have haters (especially the anonymous kind) so the hell with them and keep on doing what you do. I read what you wrote in the Huffington Post and if the media would focus on that instead of your personal rants at your loud ass neighbors then the world might just be a better place. Of course you DID post your rant on the net, lol. ..Micheal Phelps, weed obviously doesn't affect his athletic ability, he just needs to be more subtle ....didn't he notice the damn camera in his face for crying out loud?? Oh, and I do have one bone of contention with you....being a soldier isn't just "drop and give me 20, this is your rifle, defend this land we call home". My husband was a soldier at one point and his duty to his country and what he did in his deployments was far more than just that. He had a brain, he used it, and he helped the needy of the world in his own way. He still does. I like you, and I like what you and your wife are trying to do. But always, always respect a man in uniform because there is more behind the uniform....just like there is more behind your "celebrity",right?

i love your twitter comments aplusk! these people are such parasites that no matter what u write they will twist it into something horrible!! Consumers, fans and "people" in general are a lot smarter these days and wary of stupid news stories. I mean cmon here in australia our national news had a report about paris hilton getting the british pm's name wrong.. ..must have been such a slow news day.. they must have run out of cute puppy stories!!....I think for people like u that are always under constant scrutiny from the media etc, twitter and myspace etc are excellent forums for people like myself to make our own informed decisions on what sort of person/people u are.....I applaud both yourself and Demi for the work u do and for being (as i read online today and laughed) the first celebrity couple on twitter... I enjoy your 140 characters....oh and the michael phelps thing..that made our frikin news too...and really who cares if he had a splif??? much love @eliescha....

Hey Ashton, I just want to add my 2 cents here and you know that doesn't mean shit but what are you without a voice. I follow you on Twitter. I follow your wife too. I think it's bullshit the media gives a shit about what you say in your 140 spaces. I wouldn't want to have your life. I couldn't take the constant invading of every aspect of where I am going, what I am eating, and who I am talking too. And the list goes on, and on, and on. Twitterhood is a place where we (the users) shoot from the hip. Sometimes we make bold statements, sometimes we just validate ourselves in type. And what you and Demi may not realize is that those of us who "tweet" now think of you both as just normal people now. Not that you weren't before, but now in a way where we can reply back, cheer you on, and debate issues that matter. I know I never expect a tweet from you, but I think it rocks you both utilize a form of free speech that any tom, dick, or harry can. I think it's disgusting a blogger would attack your step-daughters. That is sick on so many levels I won't even validate the loser. So hang tough and don't fall for the hoopla. Soon something else shall arise and this will become old news. Tweet on with your bad selves. You have friends on Twitter. Tammy

Ashton and Demi, Let me start by saying that you and Demi are two of the greatest people ever. I don't know you personally, of course, but I do see that you are VERY caring individuals! You both have unrealistic talent and beautiful hearts and minds. I adore both of you, not as celebrities but as people. You have connected and welcomed the Twitter nation to your lives and let us inside your home as if we were the best of friends. I love the hilarious things that both of you post daily and I truly enjoy being connected to the both of you. I'M SO GLAD that you and Demi have taken this stand.. and I assure you, we will all be there to stand with you. We will always defend you and we will always take care of you. In closing, I will say this: Fuck US Weekly, fuck TMZ, fuck Perez Hilton with his tits that are bigger than mine, and fuck every other trashy tabloid that has nothing better to do than try to ruin celebrities and their lives. Ashton and Demi, YOU are the ones that rock. -Susan twitter.com/digital_bath
