Image Comics ushered in a new generation of young, talented creators and one of the brightest, the most affable and most ambitious was young Mike Turner. He stood out because not only was he tall, handsome and smart as a whip, but because he had dreams beyond just comics and more importantly, made those dreams come true.

I liked Mike a lot. We socialized mostly after hours during cons but since he had family and friends in San Diego who I also knew, we had a chance to hang out here as well, and he was just a great guy to shoot the shit with. Like Dave Stevens, Mike made comics more glamorous and cooler ahead of its time. He also always made sure to put the fans first, and it's been truly heartwarming to read all the accounts and tributes to his good nature and his big heart.

I had known about his worsening condition for some time now as I work right next to Joel Gomez who was pals with Mike back when Joel worked at Top Cow and Aspen, but even that knowledge couldn't soften the blow of his passing. It is particularly bittersweet to me that his death fell during the Wizard World Chicago convention as that is where I remember him being at his very best many years ago. Not because of the long lines of fans waiting to just meet him (because that was a normal occurrence, really) and not because of an amazing cover or comic he had just published (again, there are too many to list as I was a big MLT fan) and not because he always looked like he was having the time of his life (which he truly was--I still remember hanging out at his condo in LA, marveling at the view and toys), but because he was on stage at the Wizard World Awards show with Sam and Jeph Loeb, inspiring everyone in the room with his determination to not let cancer take him down.

And even when it got bad, Mike still made appearances at shows, drew gorgeous cover after gorgeous cover, and damn if he still didn't make it all look easy.

Cancer took its toll but did not defeat him. Mike will continue to inspire, through word and picture, anecdote and hilarous, tall tale.

Rest in peace, Mike.

Yeah, same here. I remember he was featured in a Wizard article back when I was in grade school.
He had such a distinctive ..style.. and every time I was in a comic book store, I'd see at least 3 comics that had his art on the cover. It became such a staple in the industry that even if you weren't a fan, you'd at least recognize the work and know it was his. He will be missed.

Ever since I started reading comics in 2005, Michael Turner had been one of my favorite artists. Whenever, he had drawn a varant for one of my favorite books, I was always excited to see it. He had a God-given gift that he was gracious enough to share with everyone, and I only hope he finds peace in Heaven.

Mike Turner was one of the best artists in Comics...
He knew how to take readers to other levels, past
what the writers had probably intended, in the scripting...

I don't know what to say. He was a master of the craft. And he kept going even while he was sick. That's the sign of a powerful human being. Thanks, Mike. And thanks to you, Jim, for the kind words.

Mike Turner was an amazing artist. He definitely inspired alot of the up and coming talent that's out there right now. It's sad that at such a young age a great talent was taken away. May he forever live on through those that he inspired. Inside and outside the realm of comic books.

I hadn't heard. That's horrible. And ironically he died the same week that Mike Weiringo's tribute came out.

I've loved Michael Turner's art since I first saw it in Top Cow's Ballistic. I am saddened to hear of his passing. My thoughts go out to his family.

Even more important than the great art he produced was how great of a person Michael was and how great he treated his fans. No matter how big he got, he never lost sight of treating everyone with respect, and for that I will never forget him.

His determination to not let his illness stop him and his ability to push through it to do what he loves was a big inspiration for me. He is one of the many reasons that I have developed my graphic cartooning skills. When times seem tough, I will think of him and know that he strived and pushed through the worst to give his fans and family all the love he could possibly give. God Bless you Michael L.

well Jim I can't say I've had the honor and pleasure of meeting you in person but I met Mike back in 2000 in Orlando. All I can say is that not only did I meet a truly gifted and amazing artist like yourself but I saw that he was a very much down to earth man. I've come across several artists and writers in the comics field and man have I met some real asses.
SO many of them stuck on themselves thinking they are gods among men when in truth, the real gods were the ones who shared, gave , and listened-like Mike :-)
He will be missed not just by this old army warhorse but by millions of adoring family, friends and fans.

R.I.P. Mike, for you will always be a legend among legends.

again one great artist who died.

I met Mike at SDCC 07 and I see that every artist told about him was true, It was a kind man and nothing could have show He was ill.

I always believed in detiny, but sometimes you really ask "why" , why the good leave first and why the bad are still there.

The comics industry, and all the artist loose someone who didn't deserved that.

Rest in peace, Mike ...
