Who Gives Kudos:

Wednesday, September 20, 2006
so tonight i went to see 'american hardcore'.
a documentary about the hardcore scene in america in the early 80's.
it made me nostalgic.
the hardcore scene in the early 80's was amazing.
it was new and genuine and authentic.
it was remarkable.
and at the afterparty i played 'sex bomb' with flipper.
to set the record straight, i sang with flipper for 2 nights in 1982 or 1983.
at pogo's in bridgeport, ct, and at trinity college in hartford, ct.
i don't 100% remember.
and they don't 100% remember.
but we all agree that it happened, contrary to the way it's presented in the movie.
and tonight i played bass during 'sex bomb', which arbitrarily became a ct hardcore
anthem.
every ct hardcore band played 'sex bomb' at the end of their set.
cia, reflex from pain, vatican commando's, etc.
we all ended our sets with 'sex bomb'.
much in the same way that dc bands ended their sets with '12xu'.
the good old days.
ok, that's all.
g'night.

Yeah, I'm waiting for that movie to show up here. It was such a romantic time. I used to spend my entire paycheck on (a) beer and (b) records at Real Records, proprietor U-Ron Bondage of the very fine band Really Red. He was reeeeally old...maybe thirty-two? Small store in old building...one of the few buildings in Houston now that are over ten years old. Ahhhhh, memories.

Funny how things have changed. I started going to shows again a year ago and was surprised at the vibe. The bands seemed happy to be there and happy to have us there. Went to Paul Van Dyke/Jerry Bonham last week and felt like Saul falling from his horse...again. Left beatified and have pretty much stayed that way for a week now. It's always a romantic time, I guess.

Wow...you must have started singing very young.  What a memory!

I saw Amy Goodman last night here in Tampa.  She was amazing!  If you ever get the opportunity to hear her speak you will not regret it.  I wonder what it would be like to spend a week in her shoes....hmmm.  Peace to you Moby.

hahaha... I spent my formative years in the Tampa Hardcore scene, so this seemed like a good place to leave a comment. Yes, I too would like to see this film but not for nostalgic reasons. Because right here, right now is the best moment of my life-- in fact it is the only moment of my life. I've never been anywhere else other than right here, right now. If you get caught up in the mind, and its creations like the past, how can you avoid identifying yourself with it. The mind can't exist right here, right now, in presence. And where the mind does exist it is desperate to survive. Since life itself is a threat to the mind, because life only exists right here, right now and nowhere else. The mind must make an enemy out of life, itself, out of people and situations. It becomes, in the end, your little consciousness against the whole universe. How then is your nostalgia any different from people who feel that we should be in Iraq fighting the insurgents, which they brand terrorists? Isn't it really just two different degrees of the same phenomena that of living in the mind, which has become a monster and now threatens our collective existence, as opposed to living in the here, now, in presence, and in peace?

One day I am going to write a blog for you about this Moby. It is ironic that music and the musicians who produce it are often the artists who seem most ignorant about reality. Listening to Robert Rauschenberg or Jasper Johns one can get a sense of how much their art production has illuminated this reality for them. So many writers have also been touched through there art, Huxley even wrote a book about it naming it The Perennial Philosophy, but music which on the surface would seem to have the greatest power to awaken presence in an individual hasn't actually brought many musicians around. I can think of only one: John Cage... Lou Reed and Laurie Anderson also perhaps. It really makes one stop to wonder if music is not just an inferior art form. It does seem that those who most need music are most trapped in their minds, most barred from presence... from the Divine.

Yes, I grew up in the 'American Hardcore" scene also (and don't remember parts of it). You and I are the same age, so I think we were influenced by a lot of the same artists. I really do miss the hardcore scene. It definitely made an impression on my music taste.

I'm going to have to make it a point to go check out that film....I need some good flashbacks to the good old days...
