greetings,

well well well...a lot has been happening over the past few weeks what with "The Way I Am" on an Old Navy commercial and all. i have to tell you guys that it is incredible the amount of exposure that commercial has given me! and it has afforded me many opportunities that i would have never had before! i am very grateful and so happy. and because i am still going at this with out a label, which is fun but scary, i am able to fund my career as a record label would...at least for now!

my question to you all is, when do you call it "selling out" and when do you call it "succeeding"? i have gotten a few emails and comments saying that now that my songs are on TV and mainstream radio programs, that i have become "a sellout". i suppose i should have stayed in my basement playing concerts for my dolls all my life.... i have seen this before. it makes me a bit upset because it seems that some people love knowing about an indie artist, but as soon as they garner some attention, these people get mad! but you have to understand that this is how we make a living!

i would like to open this up as a forum for you all. i want to hear both sides. my feelings will not be hurt, but i am interested to hear more.

so let's have it.

I have seen the commercial at least 10 times now, and I decided I really liked your voice, even though if my boyfriend were to call me Baby I think I wouldn't really like it. So I searched the song up, found your name, and then found you. Then I heard Keep Breathing and the whole version of The Way I Am, and I like them. I think that you found a way to get your music out there in a unique way, and doing all this without a record label does sound scary. I think you did the right thing. But I'm not really an Indie fan, having to constantly search up new and unknown bands and artists would be a bit over my head, I listen to what I hear and if I like it I listen to more.

I agree with Tina, having to look up unknowns is for the talent agencies and such......I discovered you because of the commercial and I don't think your selling out by trying to get exposure.
I think that the people that think u are selling out are just selfish. They want to be special as your fanbase and they think that once u make it to the bigtime they won't be special anymore. Also...I know alot of people that like to see their fav. artists up close, at the small clubs and halls and once a band makes it big they usually start playing at the bigger venues and stadiums.
It's kind of a catch-22 Ingrid, your fans want you to succeed, they just don't want to lose you to the BIGTIME...if you know what I mean.
Just don't lose who you are or your love for your music and you won't be selling out!

artists, specifically musicians generally have a limited career in terms of how many years it can sustain itself. I say get while the gettings good, I'm selling the hell out the first chance get. Anyone that changes their mind about your music because more people have heard it are retarded, did they decide to like it cause their ears liked it? or because no one else liked it? duh. Good for you, take over the world, I'll be throwing confetti and cheering you on.

PS I posted this here so it would be near the top and thus increase my chances of selling out.

I agree, liking a band because you think no one else does is JUST AS STUPID as liking a band because everyone else does. The fact of the matter is the people in charge of the music on shows and in commercials are seeking out unknowns and probably have a better ear for talent than most record labels do.
I don't think an artist is a sell-out till their inspiration is money rather than the love for their art. Success is not the enemy, losing who you are is.

I totally have to agree with Stephanie on this one.

I don't love your music because you're indie or not, I just love it.

I would have to say that you "sell out" by letting whatever business it is that's using your song to alter it to such an extent that it lacks the original artistic intent. I believe the Old Navy version stayed true to the original song.

But on the other hand....Leeeet's go Outback toniiiiiiight......
