I've been battling with the best way to explain our recording process to all of you. It is important for us to express to you how incredible we feel about these new songs and still not come off like a bunch of blow-hards. Maybe your expecting stories about the "magic in the air", or "the feeling of the vibe." Maybe you want to hear about all our rock star friends dropping by with Filipino models and big black suitcases full of goodies smuggled in from far away fairytale lands. No no, there was none of that madness I can assure you. But you bet your ass that before Steve's first "BOOM-RAT-TAT-TAT-TAT", we had already put in our first order for Chicken Wings. Yes my friends, if Warrior Sound is "where the magic happens", then Wingman in Carborro Plaza is "why it happens."
Imagine our surprise, upon returning with 70 pieces of gooey, fried chicken corpse, to see that Steve had only one song left to track. To those of you who don't already know, Steve Bache is a machine that runs entirely on pizza & wings and you best believe that the difference is noticeable. The chicken wing track has the greasiest groves I've ever felt, and I do mean felt, brother.
After that day it was obvious that there actually was some sort of magic in the air. The vibe continued to grow with every track that Adam would lay. And believe you me, he laid them good and hard. Sticking it in every song then breaking it off so to speak. These songs were not only growing legs, but full beards and sets of perfectly round breasts. It was almost as if there was a haze of smoke filling the control booth, pouring from under Adams "magic fingers", making us all feel a little more like superheroes and less like "poor band dudes". With the guitar tracks finished we were, for the first time, understanding what was hiding in Adams melon. How one man can play his guitar at practice, whilst hearing thousands of guitars playing along with him in his head, is beyond me. But he does it and he does it so badass it would make you run inside to tell the teacher.
Our days were filled with jams, our nights with chicken wings, brews and UNC basketball. What more could you ask for? (TAR? HEELS!) Matt was up next. He had assured us, almost everyday, in-between every take, as he lifted weights, of how awesome his tracks were going to be. And man was he dead on. He was pumping out bass tracks like it was a competitive eating competition. That mans pockets were filled with loose groves. And hear me now folks, If you've seen us live you know how much hair goes into his bass lines…be ye warned. The bass on these jams is pretty hairy. Hairy, long and flowing with beauty, and also with a scent of sweet lavender and natural botanicals.
A vocal booth has always intimidated me. I could try to blame it on slight claustrophobia, but you're allowed to call it BS if you want. This time was different, This time I was on another planet. It's amazing what you can do when you are comfortable. And that's the whole point, we are all very comfortable in that studio with our friends around us, it's like we've been fighting tooth and nail to do this for a while. And now we know that the proof is in the pudding; "We get by with a little help from our friends."
It's a pretty amazing thing working with people who are excited about what they do. We have such a special bond with Mitch and Al, the two producers at Warrior sound. With their help, the beautiful voice of Miss Bibis Ellison and the haunting sounds of the cello thanks to Andrew Anagnost and with all the moral support from all of our loved ones in the Triangle area, the four songs are now finished and we couldn't be happier.
We are home now and we can't really say that the high has worn off. It's an itch that we have to scratch and scratch it we will. No matter who we hurt in the process. Yes kiddies, this is where I throw you the curve ball. Here comes the bad news. But first the good news is that the bad news only affects the people in and around Austin, Texas, Atlanta, Georgia, Mobile, Alabama, Metairie and Shreveport, Louisiana, Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, Joplin, Missouri, Little Rock, Arkansas, Louisville, Kentucky and Nashville, Tennessee. If you live in any of those areas we are deeply sorry, but we will not be playing the dates recently posted on our site. As much as we really are excited about getting back out on the road, the excitement and the eagerness to record the rest of this album is just too overpowering. Also, Envy On The Coast who were scheduled to support us on the these dates had another touring opportunity that we agreed they should take instead of our short tour. So please understand when we say this guys. There are bigger, tastier wings to fry at the moment for everyone.
We know a lot of you are already saying, "there they go again, that He Is Legend… they haven't changed a lick." We know, we know… we talked such a big game about changing our ways and getting awesome. And we were really nervous that cancelling this tour was going to be a big bummer to a bunch of you. So we got to wrapping our brains around ways to make it up to you all. We think we have a pretty good idea that will not only tide over the people in and around the ten cities who will not be seeing us shake it down live in May, AND you crazy kids who are unaffected by the cancellation, well you get a freebie! (You lucky bastards).
So here it is folks. A tiny taste of what we have been working on. Chew on these until we can get the whole record finished. Then we cross our hearts, we're gonna bring this party to the streets.
One Love and Enjoy,
~Schuylar & He Is Legend
