The third movie of The Mummy series, The Tomb of the Dragon Emperor occurs in ancient China rather than Egypt. The movie’s plot is based loosely on the Terra Cotta army and the first known emperor of the whole of China, Qin Shi Huang. Whilst there are still cheesy but funny one liners, notable vehicle chases and epic battle scenes, the movie still comes out flawed.

It is probable to assume that historians will frown upon the historical inaccuracy portrayed in the movie. It is indicated that the Terra Cotta relics were not discovered until 1974 by farmers digging for a well. Alex O’Connell played by Australia’s Luke Ford, uncovers the Terra Cotta army in 1946. Also the Terra Cotta army was seen to be a form of funerary relics for the first emperor of China. Construction of the emperor’s mausoleum took eleven years and began when he was thirteen years of age. In the movie the formation of the Terra Cotta army was a result of a curse put upon the emperor by a sorceress, played superbly by Michelle Yeoh.

The old saying that actors are what a movie good still rings true. Brendan Fraser, who plays Rick O’Connell and John Hannah, who plays Jonathan, are the only actors to reprise their roles. Fraser fits into this ‘Indiana Jones type hero’ like a glove. He’s still got the charisma and look of abject exasperation all weathered adventurers have to pull it off. Hannah of course is still there to provide comic relief and he does so with his boyish charm, although his screen time has been cut down dramatically. The biggest disappointment is Maria Bello. Well a good actress in her own right, she lacks the chemistry with Brendan Fraser that Rachel Weisz had. I confess to not feeling sympathy toward Bello’s character when she realized that her husband had been fatally wounded. Luke Ford, seemed too old to be playing Fraser’s son and the because of this the actors resulted in depicting a more brotherly relationship. Jet Li portrayed the villain well but lacks any different facial expressions other than a stoic, almost empty gaze.

Fans of The Mummy series will most likely go to see this movie for its great action and almost comic peril as well as to complete watching the entire series. The movie definitely doesn’t fail in delivering visual eye candy although there is a particular moment in the film where the CGI rendered the scene to be unbelievable in its attempt to illustrate a real entity. The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor lacks the finesse of the first two films but is still enjoyable enough of a “popcorn movie” to entertain the masses.

The movie was great, Brendan Fraser was hilarious, however hated Maria Bello as Evie and thought it was weird how Alex had an American accent where as in the last one he was clearly as English as they come, consistency would help!

The Mummy, without the 'mummy'

'The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor', had allot of hype to carry with it following the success of the first two instalments.

Sadly the film lacked the magic formula that MADE the prequels; Rick and Evy.

Rachel Weisz (the original 'Evy) had a strong on-screen connection with Brendan Fraser ('Rick’), and upon removing this combined with stepping out of the Ancient Egyptian world proved too big of a step-down from the first two movies.

That aside, there were too many predictable plot turns, childish jokes and ridiculous character inclusions (eg Yetis, 3 headed fire-breathing dragons, but also terracotta warriors).

If you take the original ‘mummy’ (Evy) out of the mummy, you are left with mummy like figure of bandages without any substance.

i thought it was alright
it needed more emphasis on the actual main parts
like it kept going on to the next section without actually doing much within it
especially with the canyon with like the grass lands in the mountains

Hmmm... The Mummy.

Like with most sequels this film was nowhere near as good as the originals, however there was good and bad parts. The film is based around an ancient Chinese Emperor, Emperor Han, trying to regain power and authority in Egypt after being cursed. If you love non-stop action then this is defiantly the movie for you too see, with constant gun battles, lengthy chases, and a 'super' indestructible emperor with a definite mean streak.

However, the director tries to make it appealing to all people by mixing in some humor and a love story to the plot. This does not work.

Johnathan has no real standing in the film other than to create the comic relief, but he is trying too hard with the humor. In the previous films, Johnathan came off as a real laid back Englishman who was in the wrong place at the wrong time and thus said amusing things to the audience. In this film though the lines said seem more forced and are not really the character, thus making it not flow and not overly funny to me.

The love story that unfolds is between, of course, the traditional damsel in distress and white knight, Alex and Lin. This love story seems very... predictable. It follows the same format of all other films of nowadays and now i am just getting sick of it. She tries to kill him, she falls for him, he falls for her, she is captured and he rescues her. With all the action surrounding the love story, it kind of covers the predictability of it, but it could of worked much better instead of the un-convincing acting that was there instead. There was little chemistry between the pair.

Also, the change of actor for the part of Evie made it hard for me to get absorbed. I know circumstances didn't allow Rachel Weisz to return but it made hard for me to keep with the story. I didn't think that Maria Bello really took from the previous portrayal of the character, she seemed to make the character her own, in most acting cases this is a good thing but when you are following on from previous movies there needs to be a bit of consistency.

I would recommend this to people who enjoyed the previous mummy's and people who love action/adventure genre. I would give it 6 1/2 stars... not one I will be buying on DVD though.

The Mummy (1999) burst onto the screens as an new take on an old premise, with state of the art special effects and a young vibrant cast. Nine years later, we have The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor.

Set in 1946, Rick O'Connell (Brendan Fraser) and wife Evelyn (Maria Bello) have settled into a rather dull retirement. When approached by a government agent for 'one last job', they journey to China to return a mystical gem known as the Eye of Shangri-La. Of course their son Alex (Luke Ford) happens to be there, having just unearthed an army of terracotta soldiers along with the cursed statue that was Emperor Han (Jet Li).

The third in the series, this film falls short of the original on several grounds. First, it's the same take on the old premise. The film only ventures into new territory in terms of geography, and like The Mummy Returns, the storyline mirrors the first, down to the mummy being cursed as a result of infidelity.

Secondly, there is the sudden jump in time. Similar to Indiana Jones & The Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, there is a significant time difference from the previous film, with the characters having experienced all manner of ventures and learning new skills 'during the war'. The rough and ready Egyptian look has been replaced by 40's glamour, with the characters looking more ready to attend a Hollywood premiere than take on a rampaging clay mummy.

Also lacking is the fresh-faced cast. Brendan Fraser in particularly borders on parodying the dashing figure of the original, while Maria Bello takes over the role of Evie from Rachel Wiesz, albeit with a faltering accent and lacklustre chemistry with Fraser. Jet Li has minimal screen time in the flesh as the villain of the piece, and spends the majority of it stalking and glaring. His martial arts ability aside, he lacks the menace that Arnold Vosloo's Imhotep brought to the first film.

However John Hannah is solid as ever, providing comedy relief as Evie's brother Jonathan, while Australian Luke Ford is predictable but servicable as Alex.

The film is best described as a mildly entertaining piece of fluff. There is some entertaining action sequences, with some quality special effects and occasional comedy, but struggles to hold a candle to the original film.

"Here we go again!" Rick O'Connell (Braden Frasier) expresses as he battles a new breed of mummies, this time in China to fight the dragon emperor (Jet Li) and his army. And here we go again indeed for it seems no one wants to be dragged through this dismal adventure.

The plot isn't the best. Evelyn (Maria Bello) and Rick are both bored with their retired lives, they desperately but secretly await for a new venture and it comes thanks to their college "drop out" son Alex. And so begins the fight to stop the Dragon Emperor unleash his army of clay like warriors.

The connection between the characters suffers a puzzled distance. The missing presence of Rachel Weisz is felt. Jonathon (John Hannah) hasn't changed expect for looking much older. Michelle Yeoh as Zi Yuan and Jet Li's take as Emperor are the some of the rare exceptional highlights of the film.

Special effects are on the same level as the previous 2 mummy movies (if not a little bit better) but does not come close to the success of The Mummy or The Mummy Returns.

Only for the true Mummy fans. This movie alone would make a mummy retreat to its tomb for centuries. Maybe in 2-3 years they can do a retake like they did with the hulk.........

The Mummy 3 wasn't too bad. The CGI and special effects were pretty cool but I was annoyed that Rachel Weisz wasn't in it. It just wasnt the same without her.

Maria Bello who played Evie in it was ok, but the story could've been better by saying Rick and Evelyn had gotten divorced and the new chick was his new wife, thus the reason being why their son was far away from them.

Something like that would've been better, but all and all, it was a pretty good movie.

Rick O'Connell: I've put down more mummies in my time.

Alex O'Connell: [scoffs] *One* mummy.

Rick O'Connell: Same mummy.
*Twice*!

It's a film definitely not without flaws.

As a big fan of the previous mummy films, it was going to be hard to top the first two films and perhaps wrap up a trilogy.

With Rachel Weisz out and Maria Bello in, it seemed as though it was just a two big of a change to make the film any good. Even when watching the film, despite Bello being a great actress, she was unable to replicate the Evelyn O’Connell that fans have known and loved. But having said that, the film wouldn't have worked half as well if she wasn't in the film at all. Fraser had stated prior to production that he "didn't want to start off a third film putting flowers on Evey's grave." And that is quite true.

Even with the previous films dealing heavily in supernatural material (MUMMIES, bringing people back from the dead, flesh eating bugs, a scorpion man), "Tomb of the Dragon Emperor" exceeds both of them and brings in Yetis and a (somewhat) mummy that controls the elements and shape shifts into dragons and other beasts. It's hardly a flaw to critise; you can't say its unrealistic when the former films aren't exactly grounded to reality.

Jet Li makes a good villain, despite being terra cotta for the most part. With Michelle Yeoh, Luke Ford and Isabella Leong being welcomed additionals to the cast.

As a film, it's watchable, plenty of Special Effects to enjoy and a few laughs.

As a Sequel, it's rather disappointing. The characters that we've known aren't what we remembered and the actual feel of the film is indeed quite different- with most of the action scenes shot in the day.

In the end, it's hardly apart of the trilogy. But when people complain that "The Mummy Returns" showed nothing new- they can hardly complain about this.

It's pretty simple what the general consensus was while leaving the cinema; don't spend your money on that shamble!

For lovers of the last two Mummy installments, avoid this movie like the plague. Instead of the usual dry humour and action filled plot, director Rob Cohen has managed to massacre this franchise so that all that is left is a number of weak actors, a sloppy plot and load of "dad jokes" that only warrant a groan. How he managed to do it so spectacularly, God only knows, but at 111 minutes, you'll be wishing he just gave up in the middle.

After the success of her second book, Evelyn (Mario Bello) is lacking inspiration for the third. The relationship between her and husband Rick (Brendan Frazer) is lacking, and when the opportunity to go to Shanghai to deliver an artifact to the Chinese government, they quickly snatch it. While in Shanghai, they are reunited with Jonothan (John Hannah) and their son Alex (Luke Ford), and go to deliver the artifact. Not surprisingly, they resurrect the Mummy of an Emperor (Jet Li) and the only person who can assist them in their plight is Lin (Isabella Leong). Hilarity does not ensue.

Oh, where to start? Well, replacing Rachel Weisz with Mario Bello was a terrible choice. Her fake Brittish accent is irritating, and without Rachel Weisz's charm, the movie lacks something. Maria Bello is insincere and the chemistry between Evelyn and Rick is non-existent. Watching these two kiss is like watching your parents...just the thought alone is off putting.

The supposedly strained relationship between Alex and Rick is believable, but the conclusion of this storyline leaves you feeling cheated. Sure, Rick turns up, they fight, they work together to rectify the problem and suddenly become best friends. Wake me up later.

Jonothan's "witty" comments fall flat every single time, and his role in the movie is completely insignificant, which is unfortunate, as Jonothan's one liners were often the comic relief needed in such an action filled movie. This is probably due to the fact that the whole movie was so laughable in itself, it didn't really need much help.

To its credit, the CGI in the Mummy is quite spectacular, and the landscapes that have been crafted are beautiful. But then, they bring in the CGI Yetis to help the protagonists, and they've lost you again.

The Mummy takes views on a roller coaster ride. But not a good roller coaster. One of those cheap haunted house ones that you laugh all the way through and then realise you just blew money on that crap. Fans of the first two Mummy movies will be sorely disappointed by this installment.

1.
5/5

The Mummy 3: Tomb Of The Dragon Emperor

Brendon Fraser teams with his wife, Maria Bello, and son, Luke Ford, to take on the resurrected Dragon Emperor and his terracotta army. The story is overflowing with cliches including casting Chinese staples Jet Li and Michelle Yeoh as the villain and heroine. This sequel has plenty of action, but not enough plot, and certainly not enough thought. The movie is certainly hampered by too much family squabbling, family bonding, poor romance plotting, CGI, a lack of logic, and no mummy.

The Mummy series is the new Police Academy because, it doesn’t matter how bad it is, they are bound to make another one anyway. At least the women are tough.

the mummy 3 was a brilliant story... unfortunatly it didnt match the other movies. with the absence of rachael weize, the character of eve was wrong. i mean her character was played well but it wasnt the same and the entire atmosphere of the movie was too different. but as a movie not in a trilogy, a very well written story and very well acting.
