One of our members needs some advice:

"I use Nikon D50/D80 cameras and have only ever used the built in flash. When I shoot gigs I hardly ever use flash at all, but most of my peers have flash units attatched to their SLRs. Can anyone recommend flash units for the cameras mentioned? Also, are any of you self taught in using them? If so, how easy or difficult was it to learn (do they come with an instruction mannual?!?). Is it just a case of switching them off and on when you want to use them?!? Forgive my ignorance - I have no idea at all, but if I'm to progress I guess it's something I have to learn....Thanks."

I have both the sb-800 and sb-600 and they are great....a little bit of a learning curve, but the manual explains the use very well. You can control the sb-600 from the sb-800 and I use both for group shots at weddings, very nice feature.

I also have the SB-600 & I love it. I taught myself how to use it, but I'm still learning more about it everyday. Good luck!!

I also use D50 and D80's on a daily basis, and the Sb600 seems to work quite well for almost everything I have shot to date. I am self tought, never looked at the manual (but I never said that was a good idea, lol, but I learned, the hard way, haha)... Anyways, ummm... yeah... I agree with everyone else, its good!!! hehehe

I agree that the SB-600 is a nice speedlight...that's what I have. I just wanted to add that one of the nicest features is that Nikon flashes are made to go with the Nikon cameras, so it can read a lot of needed information directly from your camera.

Also, I'd REALLY recommend getting a flash diffuser. These are FANTASTIC for softening the flash and for spreading the light out more evenly throughout a room. There are a couple different styles out there, but, just make sure you get one that's made for the specific speedlight you end up going with. :) You'll LOVE it!

Good luck! :)

The SB800 comes with several types of filters/diffusers and a pretty good manual. The ability to control other Nikon speedlights is quite handy as a previous poster mentioned. It's pricey but worth it. Don't forget to adjust your WB. Have fun with either one, but do go with the Nikons.
