One of our members needs some advice:

"I am fairly new to professional photography. I was wondering what kind of portfolio is sufficient. I need to know what kind of album, binder, etc to put the photos in. Also, what sizes do the photos need to be in and how many? What I want is to have something really super nice and impressive to show to them. Thanks all for your help. I have learned so much from all of you."

What type of photography/client base are you wanting to show these two.

The best portfolio is an online portfolio. Of the hundreds of clients I've met with I don't think I've ever shown any of them an actual print (aside from wedding albums and coffee table books.) They see my work online before they ever even meet me and know the quality they are getting.

If you can't afford a website of your own you should check out fotki.com

You can upload a portfolio onto that and give people your URL go check out your pictures.

If you really need something to show somebody I would go with something simple and elegant. A black leather binder filled with 8x10s. Choose images that show variety. You wouldn't want all headshots just as you wouldn't want all full body shots. Also keep images grouped based on color or black and white. When I design wedding albums I almost never put a black and white image on the same page as a color image. This is because it is more pleasing to the eye to see uniformity.

Good luck!

Portfolios don't have to be hard copy photos in a port binder anymore.
I have 3 myself for different types of photography.

Most often, if I am bidding on a job, I'll put together a DVD with images tailored for the client.

Just like Brett, I send people to an online site first. I have portfolios to show people, but it's quicker and more cost effective (for everyone) if they can see your work before meeting with you. When I do use portfolios, I always use a simple but elegant leather album with about 10 pages of 8 x 10 slots. I separate my portfolios by type (weddings, kids, couples and even by models).

I find that people generally only want to see that which is particiular to their interest. Good luck and many blessings, Kimmie

this is a good question...... the fotki.com sounds like something i might check out and i was wondering about portfolios as well. i have had a few people ask for a portfolio. i guess i should get one together. i have seen in the past that photographers use a photobook with the slide in pages. not the clingy kind. but you put in the photo at the top of the plastic page. almost like what teachers have. and use the tabs and label them...color photos....black and white photos...before edit photos...after edit photos....wedding...family....children....soon to be parents....still images (landscapes and objects) and so on. that might help. but a photo book with out the pages and you get your own works. i hope this helps. im still a little new too.

Hi there! I just wanted to direct you to a nice portfolio site. I bought my portfolio from this company and love it! It is called Dick Blick Art Supplies. Here is the link to the one I bought.

The online portfolio is the best way to go though. But it is nice to have a hard copy to show.

Hope this helps!!

Hugs,
Becki
