I had the same problem as you do about whether to go with Nikon or Canon...I am glad I went with my d80...I would never consider switching now...the d80 is awesome....Amazon has great prices and is reputable...my hubby bought stuff from them and my mother-in -law also......comparing:Amazon- $1,044.......Best buy-$1,199.......Nikkor is your best for lenses, but I have heard sigma is ok too....good luck I hope this helps

When you shoot weddings you really need to consider the lighting situations...most times during the ceremony you will not be able to use flash....I would seriously consider the D300 because of the iso's you can shoot, 6400 with little noise. Also, you need fast lenses....I carry 3 bodies when I shoot a wedding, 2 digital bodies (D200 and a Fuji S5), and a film body (nikon F5)...i have B&W film in this camera, usually 400 rated at 1600. My lenses are: 17-35mm 2.8, 28-70mm 2.8, 70-200mm 2.8 w/VR, and an 85mm 1.4, I also have a 10.5mm fisheye (I use sparingly). you need fast lenses, and you need to have at least 2 different focal lenths ( I would recommend the 28-70, my workhorse, and the 70-200). If you are shooting weddings, you will not regret having the right gear. Also a good speedlight (SB-800) is great. Hope this helps and best of luck. Dave

Well, God welling one day I can afford something like that...If you started off with all of that, then you were lucky or rich!!! lol
However, Im trying to get started so I have to do the best i can with the lest possible, that also meaning I have to take the weddings you wouldn't..But, we all have to start somewhere..
Right now I have the 18-55, 28-80, and the 70-210mm...I have the d80and 2 film for my other photographer color and B/W...
Im looking at getting the SB600 flash-and 30mm f/1.4-lens will this work good for weddings?
The fisheye sounds great with a price of about 700. for the 10.5mm. but, what could I do with a 18-55mm? or do I really even need one right now?
And have you ever used a 80-400mm in a wedding? Is it a slow lens? OR will it work?

So, what do you think I need or dont? Sorry for all the questions, but Im new!!

Thank you for your time..
Robyn

I know if I was shooting a wedding, I'd never use the 80-400mm, but everybody is different. Not to mention, that lens is not cheap, so that is something to think about. I will keep my thoughts about Nikon to myself mostly because I'm a Canon lover. The one thing that I will say about Nikon is that you need to remember that you are paying for a big name brand. Yes, Nikon has great stuff, but you can get great stuff at a better price just without the Nikon name on it. Other company's have great cameras and lens too. Sony has out a whole new line and I hear it's great. I just got the Canon 40D and it kicks ass. I love it! Please keep in mind that all this is just my thoughts and ideas, and I'm not trying to upset anybody.

Oh and I was going to say that Sigma has some great stuff too. I have the 28-200mm lens (for Canon) and it's a nice piece of equiptment. If you'd like, I can send you a sample from that lens. Just let me know. Or you can go to my other profile at; myspace.com/momentsrememberedphotos and look in the blog labled The Shortte Family Slideshow. Most of those, if not all of those photos where shot with that Sigma lens.

I agree with Tara. Nikons and Cannons are both great but you are also paying for the name. There are a lot of great less known name brands out there that do the job. Try checking out some pawn shops that have warranties and/or a guarantee....or even a local flea market or something. I personally use the new Sony A100. I love it. It has a wide range of ISOs and you can do just about everything with it that you can others. And also remember that just because you have a great or expensive camera doesn't mean the shots will be perfect. You should check out one of the older blogs on this page about how the camera doesn't make the shot, the eye does...in other words, just a reminder to not get too worked up about a specific camera....all things come in time. Just my thoughts...I have only done a few weddings but thought you could use some professional advice as well as an intermediate photographers like me :)....good luck.

I own the 40D and I LOVEEEE it. I have 2 friends who specialize in weddings with their 40Ds and one thing thats awesome about the 40D is that its great performance can develop nice as$ quality photos. Its innovative silent modes one of the best whereever noises can be a problem. So that would be a plus when shooting some weddings.
