One of our memebers needs some advice:

"Hello and thank you so much for hosting such a great resource to us amatuer photographers! My questions are to the point:

1)I have a Canon D40 with just the starter lens (18-55mm) and am not thrilled. I love my camera, but if I were able to purchase a great starter lens for portraiture and hopefully weddings can you suggest a good working lens that will cover the above?

2)just wanted to know how you post your pics directly to your myspace layout rather than a slide.com slide show?

thank you so much!!

Christina"

not sure the answer for number one, but it is quite easy to post a photo on your page

go to tinypic.com
and upload your photo there.
then you will be provided with a set of links.

you may use the link for the myspace already, or you could copy the link that is "direct for layout"
and put it in this code

..

take out all of the spaces.

:)

Yeah, the 50 is a GREAT "all purpose" lens!
...and the f1.4 doesn't hurt either!!

I have the Canon EF-S 17-55 as my "basic" lens and I use my Canon EF 70-200 for anything that I know I nned to get the distance to shoot.
Its more about the lens QUALITY, however...
Spend as much as you can on a QUALITY lense with good glass, rather than overspend on a "bigger" lens with crap glass.

Just my .02

Best for the money.....hands down!
Get the EF-S 17-85mm IS.............

Or if you can put more money towards your lens, GET the EF 24-70 "L"

Both are great for all-around general purpose, and will suit low light situations.

Personally I find nothing wrong with the 18-55mm kit lens, but I didn't think it came packaged with a 40D. Usually the 40D comes with a 28-135mm IS USM or a 17-85mm IS USM. I have the 18-55mm that came packaged with my Rebel XT and for the price of the lens...it's not as bad as people say. You just need to practice using it. I typically shoot in manual mode and have shot some pretty decent low-light photos with it. Yes....it can be done! I also do custom settings in my camera to help me get the results I'm after. I have played with the 28-135mm IS lens that comes packaged with the 40D and it takes beautiful photos. I do agree that a 50mm f1.4 would be a great lens for low light, portraits and certain wedding shots, but it does require you move around alot due to it being a fixed focal lens. It also takes alot of practice to use. I don't own one yet, but it's on the top of my wish list. My suggestion is to do a Google search on best Canon lenses for weddings and read the forums on what other photographers are suggesting. A good place to go for lens reviews is www.photodo.com

As far as posting pics and doing slideshows on myspace...you can do slideshows directly from your pics section right here on myspace.

I did research and found that 50 mm f1.8 or 50 mm f1.4 was the two most used for portraiture. I have a 50 mm now, I've not used it for portraits, but for nature so far. It's got great depth of field and works great with the lighting..
