Hi Pam,
I have exciting news: our comments can help save polar bears from extinction!
At first I couldn't believe Fish and Wildlife was going to do it. But it's true - the public has been asked to comment on the listing of polar bears as a "threatened" species. Send your public comment in today to urge the Fish and Wildlife Service to list the polar bear as "threatened."
According to government studies in recent months, more and more bears are starving to death, and more and more of their babies are dying before reaching adulthood. In fact, of polar bears studied between 1990 and last spring, only 25 cubs per 100 females survived. That's less than half the survival rate of polar bear cubs studied from 1967 to 1989! [1]
The threats polar bears face are monumental, and it will take decisive government action to help save them. This is why a "threatened" status is so important. With a "threatened" status, the government will finally be forced to do more to protect polar bears dying at alarming rates. Send your public comment here: http://go.care2.com/e/R4Gm/Cycr/Vh6R
Scientists attribute increased rates of starvation to a loss of the summer ice that helps polar bears find food. In addition to loss of ice, scientists have warned that noise from oil drilling and oil development in their habitat could cause mother polar bears to abandon their helpless cubs. And a cub's chance of survival without its mother is impossible.
If polar bears have a "threatened" status, many key threats to polar bears will be taken more seriously, including the climate crisis and harmful oil drilling in their habitat. Send in your public comment here.
Last spring, 3 adult females were found dead, showing signs that they had starved to death. Unless we act, polar bears may vanish forever.
Fortunately, there's something you and I can do - today - to help save them.
Thanks,
Hilary Stamper
