Current mood:  contemplative

Last Thursday morning, Mr. Colin White, the most important member of the Modern Literature Department at the Faculty of Humanities of Mexico's ..:namespace prefix = st1 ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags" />National Autonomous University, for the last three decades (at least) died. He was a true mentor for many people, including me. Several of his former and current students have written heartfelt and illuminating blogs about him (I'll post the links after my brief words), and I almost feel that I simply didn't knew him as well as they did. But I do have fond memories of him, and that, unknowingly, he was the main reason why I got so deeply into Blake as an undergraduate (by deciding that the particular class I belong to wasn't ready to understand Blake). Years later, he would recommend my undergraduate thesis on the flower poems of Songs of Innocence and Songs of Experience to his new students in the Romanticism course. I couldn't be more flattered than that, even though I no longer consider the academic world to be my destiny. He was ironic and would question us about everything… we would be scared, but now I understand that he was trying to shake us out of our lethargy, he was making us think. And in a world where "analyzing" texts is the norm (and from all sort of extra-literary views, whether feminist, cultural studies, multiculturalism, Marxism, psychoanalysis, etc.), he was a champion of poetry. Rest in peace, Colin…

El mundo es un pañuelo! Sabes que mi mejor amiga Erandi también fue su alumna? De hecho llegué a conocer al señor Colin pero hasta ahora empiezo a comprender la tremenda influencia que tuvo...
