Current mood:  optimistic
Category: Jobs, Work, Careers

It became official today.

After a 7am call time with a 9am crew call, after standing around for 7 hours at our location waiting for the studio to make a decision once it was realized that Steve Carell would, once again, not be crossing the picket line of the Writer's Guild picketers, our producer called the entire crew into the set of Michael's condo and announced that The Office is officially shutting down.

For how long? That's really up to the producers and studio, I guess. I feel the writers have a valid claim. They want residuals for all content written and produced for "new media" (i.e. internet, itunes, cell phones, etc.) and they absolutely should fight for it because all media will be streamed this way in the future. Truth be told, the writers picketing right now aren't gonna gain anything. They're losing so much money by not working right now that any residuals they garner from this new media will never cover it. But that's not really the point...

So, it sucks for us little people, but I'm not all that annoyed. I fully support the WGA, and the writers of The Office specifically. I wish them luck in their quest.

As for me, it's back to the unemplyment line and the dayplayer world. Personally, I'm kinda excited. As long as I can keep busy, I'll be aok and I can meet new people, catch up with old friends and still pay my rent every month.

Until this whole thing blows over anyhow.

That is all.

Thanks for the support and if you need a dayplayer, you best call me. I'm pretty awesome.

-Dan

(This is the crew gathered in the living room watching the next two eps of the show. It was a rough day... But that's what family is for.)

I really feel bad abou this whole ordeal. I am a huge fan of The Office, and it hurts to know production has stopped.

Good luck with getting through this time. Hopefully somehow this will get resolved soon!

I'm a huge fan of Steve Carell AND The Office, but now I am a bigger fan. Congrats to him for standing up for something he believes in like that. It isn't the writers and actors of his stature that take a hit on residuals as much as us "little guys." Good for him!!

Wishing you and all involved all the best.

I'm going to miss The Office more than words can express but I fully support the writers. Here's to hoping it can get resolved sooner rather than later.

Thanks for the update.

Sounds like the studios are way to greedy, considering they pulled the same crap with dvd sales.
Hope it gets resolved soon, with the writers and everyone else getting what they deserve.

I am very impressed with the support being received from all involved with the show. I hope for a this passes quickly, not only for the writers to get their due, but for the rest of you in the industry who are impacted. Good luck with the job hunt.

You're a class act, Dan - I have faith you'll be busy during this downtime.

If I wasn't stuck in the middle of the country I'd be doing what I could to help support the picketers.

Thanks Dan. You're the best. I wouldn't judge anyone on the show for any opinion on this, but I really do appreciate your words of support. I hope everyone's back soon and that you still are able to have some mean adventures in the meantime.

I second those emotions Dan. I've mentioned you to my new AD team. I'm not sure if they can bring you on now that the market will be flooded with peeps, but i'm putting in my best word for ya.

And BJ, Mike and I watched the web short on youtube that you guys made yesterday at the picket line. I'll miss working with the cast and crew so much. I hope for a fair resolution. I fully support what you're doing.

I support what the writers are doing. However on a personal note I will be crushed not having the Office anymore. Does this mean when they do finally agree that The Office will not go back into production? If that's the case I have just lost a best friend. This completely sucks for us viewers. I truly hope they settle this really soon.

Are there any non WGA writers that the show may decide to hire or do they have to be a part of the WGA?

Sarah -- Greg Daniels was one of the signatories of the open letter from showrunners attesting that they will not continue production until a deal is reached. This certainly means that he won't be bringing in "scab" writers.

Now I'm off to take some donuts to the strikers at 30 Rockefeller Plaza!

I think it's awesome that you're maintaining a positive attitude about the whole thing . . . what a PITA. As much as I'll miss my beloved TV (and when I say "beloved," I mean it), I fully support the efforts of the WGA and really admire the "big guys" like Steve, Greg, and Tina Fey for standing in solidarity with their fellow union members who are living project to project and getting screwed out of the fruits of their labor.

Beyond the scope of this strike, I hope this serves as a reminder to everyone to buy union made products whenever possible, too :).

Hey, Dan. Can I just say that that's an awesome picture of y'all? It just shows how much love and support there is for each of y'all. I wish you and the rest of the crew best of luck during the strike. Question, though... I've seen this as a concern among devoted Office fans. When the show comes back, whether it's next week or next year, will you and/or the rest of the crew come back as well or will we have a whole different crew? The overall consensus of the fans is that we have fallen for all the crew as well as the cast and the writers and having one big chuck of the Office Family gone is heartbreaking. (Especially if one is you...)

The general consensuse is that everyone will be back, barring any (then) schedule problems. But Kent, our head cheese, has told everyone that we're all welcome back and will be invited back. This has seriously been the best season I've ever worked on the show and that's because of the crew.

That was some funny shit! Re-runs don't scare me. I lived in the woods for over a year and saw nothing on t.v. (cause I had no power) so I still have a season and a half to catch up on anyway. This season Jim and Pam are together and I was all "WTF?"... so now I can go rent the dvd's and catch up. Stay strong. And the offer still stands, if it get's tight for any of you you're welcome to crash on my couch. :) We'll drink wine and play scrabble...

Thanks for the insight! I would have to agree with you after reading Jenna Fischer's blog. She really explained it well, for us non-Hollywood experienced to understand it, and that's what made the difference as I really was upset at first. I'm glad that the writers have the kahonas to stand up for this, as it really is unjust that they aren't getting anything from the internet streaming/downloading. That's just not right. Keep your head up, and I hope you find other work very soon.

Hey Dan!

I don't know you, but thanks for the update from your point of view. I didn't even think about how this whole thing affects the crew members. I just spent 6 months on unemployment myself, and it wasn't the proudest moment of my life! Thats for sure!

GOOD LUCK, and I hope everything falls into place before the holidays man!

I hope you get to go back to work soon. I hope this issued is resolved quickly.
