Opening as usual, recap of last week. And pumping the PPV. Still some nice footage of some of the old timers. That's what happens when you sign off and they own the footage. Some of these guys are probably turning in their graves. But I still like it.

Shane and Stephanie doing their spiel. Only thing I can say is Grecian formula, try it, you'll like it, Shane.

The show, first match, Mickey James vs Katie Lea Burchill with brother Paul at ringside.

These girls worked their butts off, did some great moves but not much on timing. Katie does take the time to work on character--definitely the more polished of the two. Solid and stiff performance. Wonder how many injuries have happened due to just not enough ring time, and the fact that they rush everything trying to get too much in? Katie loses and then brother Paul and her attack Mickey. Oh my gosh, surprise, Kofi Kingston comes to save the day.

When coming back from commercial break, impromptu Intercontinental Match already in progress. Paul vs Kofi, set up from the attack last week and brought to a head with Paul attacking Mickey, and Kofi asking for it after save.
A very good match, by both men, actually a good wrestling match. Paul grounded Kofi and made him show that he could wrestle. But it looked like he had a hard time getting into position to apply holds. Just inexperience.
Paul shows tenacity works hard, like a heel should and doesn't go down on the first shot. He made Kofi earn what he got, made it believable, got some heat, and gave him a good comeback. Paul does some blocking which doesn't hurt, because he doesn't over sell it. I really enjoyed this nice surprise and how about a match with no ring entrance?

Santino against Beth Phoenix.
Oh well, should have known, two good matches in a row just wasn't going to happen.
Vince I will tell you now, you are missing the boat with Santino, because he can work. Not that the others can't and many aren't capable, but I have stated in the past the great ones take impossible ideas and make them work. He did it and for those who think you have to win them all--wrong. He came out of this with more heat than he entered with. Fairly good job by both. Slam by Beth was different, I hope I don't see that again, and fans did you notice how he was beaten? With the most devastating hold today ? The crippling schoolboy.

Kelly Kelly vs ?....Dibiase and Rhodes come down instead. Mic skills not that bad, creating a team of young men we can all dislike. Disrespectful, arrogant, talented, and good looking. They both took after their Mothers. Duggan came down, always great to see him, tried to bring the boys attention back and of course they humiliated him. I hope they both know he could mop the floor with both of them, at the same time, without breaking a sweat. And Jim, you have never dropped your head like a sad cow in your life. And damned sure didn't look comfortable.
Attaching JBL to these two could help them. Although they are sure to be tossed around later, but boys, that's paying your dues. Lets see how you handle this. Oh, by the way, did you like Kelly's match? A great ring entrance.

CM Punk vs Kane
Is this a warm up to show that he can actually wrestle Batista? I certainly hope not. Kane really did do something special to make this work. Threw some great stuff grabbing a hold after great drop kick with CM sitting on his butt. Of course, he didn't give it the respect it deserved. Still Kane made this work. Finish see CM, I told you--you can't pick them all up. And think you would have had a better move to use for the count out.

Aftermath, well done by Kane, saved by Batista, would have liked to seen Kane get away with heat. All this, I'm sure and pray that they are turning CM heel. As he would have a better chance of getting over, and at least he wouldn't have to change his outfit. Kane has certainly brought his contribution to a new level. Sometimes a story makes one's creative juices flow and that is what I am seeing in Kane. He deserves it, and the WWE needs it. Something happened in this match that also happened in the second match. Do you know?

Edge and Vicki G getting married on Smackdown, Friday, waiting for invitation, but Thank God, it got lost in the mail.

Chris Jericho and Paul London.
Guess the attacks by Shawn earlier had no effect and didn't even leave a scratch on him. Still pushing the jealousy angle--that I like. Shawn, not a hair out of place, but at least he looked like hell.

Jamie Noble vs Snitski
Set up has lesson to be learned for young men. Don't let pride and lust for a woman get your ass kicked. Snitski looked good with broken nose. Just a win for him, to get a little something back so he can do the favor when needed. Noble does his gimmick well. Don't know about you, but my time, I've met a million just like him, no, not all of them were wrestlers.

JBL, C. Rhodes,T Dibiase vs Cena, Cryme Tyme
At least no limo. That's a blessing. Cena starts with C. Rhodes--whatever happened to locking up and getting the hold, or to the heel throwing the first punch or kick? Oh the times have changed. Check the ring attire, heels dress like wrestlers, the babies like thugs. When you start a match kicking, punching , and doing finish maneuvers, where do you go from there? No where but down. The heels were doing the wrestling, and not easy to get heat on a thug, but they didn't give up. And it's happened, the same freak thing occurred and 2nd and 4th match, is also appearing in this one. Hope it goes all the way and is capitalized on. JBL taking ref trying to give Ted and Cody opportunity to get cheap heat from outside--they didn't. Maybe they don't know or just too excited. Rhodes gave great move with missed bulldog but then got up and delivered punch to Cena to stop the tag. It was milked properly but would have been better if he had tagged out and let the fresh heel do it. Tag made comeback given by Rhodes and Dibiase - JBL avoids Cena and then gets DQ'd for the save. Damn! A DQ on a save.

Afterbirth, all I can say is won't the murder of Cena hurt the PPV?? What a stinking way to end a decent show.
Tonight we've had a DQ, a count out, a girl-boy match, a lost match, an impromptu match, and Noble non-match, no referee.
Tonight we had over 33 minutes of wrestling. A fluke? I hope not. Whatever the reason, I thank you. Still would be sweeter with more. Matches still don't get enough time, and that's how you make stars. Giving them time to establish exhibit show-ability and create character.
Now let's talk about that freak thing. Better yet, you tell me if you know.

JBL's car attack on Cena certainly goes against the WWE's corporate policy on "murder/attempted murder" but perhaps they don't care anymore.

Truly, if this were real, Cena would have been severed in half. But, I'm sure he'll stumble into the PPV all bruised and soundly defeat JBL like the Superman he is.

(By the way, wwe. com is reporting that Cena wa "grazed and escaped" the attack.
)

I personally liked the impromptu nature of the show even though the finish to the main was senseless.

wwe. com said that jbl attempted to run cena over , which we all know wasnt gonna happen but yes cena supposibly turned into ""super "" cena and moved out the way at the last minute... i am so glad i have wwe 24/7 so i can watch old school wwf and prime time wresting and such , cuz the writers in wwe today are terrible and are not nothing but soap opera writers.
happy tuesday shannon and jake, hope all is well with yall guys

LOL I've been waiting all week for this...well, I didn't like Raw again...I ain't gettin this whole Vince thing, I guess we'll find out what's up when he returns in a few months...but funny thing, weren't things just as chaotic when vince WAS THERE ??? They talk about CM's title match being unsanctioned, but I thought the contract said he can have the shot ANYWHERE ANYTIME...it's WWE they probably forgot lol...and then thought the viewers forgot
The thing I didn't get was (and this is just my philosophy, by no means being disrespectful) the way Kofi was bouncing Burchill around was a bit much for a guy that small, Burchill is big, I think that a guy that weighs 180 shouldn't hiptoss a guy who weighs 250, but that's just something I think....also, Burchill has now been pinned clean by Kofi, I guess that feud is dead for now...with the girls out there, surely they could have set up a DQ sor something to continue the feud and give Burchill some heat...

Cena's promo was too long, the match with JBL has been done before and the promo sounded like a soliloquoy in a bad OFF,OFF Broadway play...

I didn't like the whole Rhodes/Dibiase thing with Duggan...I like Rhodes and Dibiase as a fresh young team, but we all know it's scripted and it seems that Vince McMahon loves taking shots at the old schoolers....I woulda like to have seen Dusty come down and help Duggan out, hell Duggan and the 2x4 take the young punks out...once again a long talking segment that only served to set up the main event

I don't like Cryme Tyme...I don't like Cena...they wear jeans and sneakers/construction boots in the ring....they can't wrestle either....being on the indies, I always thought that it'd be impossible to even be LOOKED at without proper wrestling attire, it's pretty funny being that Cena has been their main man for the last few years...oh well on to the freak thing...LOL

was it CM Punks 5000 kicks and Kane still can't go down on a bulldog ??? LMAO or was it Kane's dropkick while CM was sitting ?? Burchill getting hiptossed like a jr heavyweight ??? is it the big men not working like big men ??? strange...

can't wait till next week !!

Still trying figure out this freak thing you are talking about...can't quite figure it out...the ONLY thing I can see is either the small guys aren't selling enough for getting pounded by the bigger opponent, or the big man is selling too much for the smaller guys (as seen in the main event)....give us an answer LOL !!

I think that whole thing at the end of RAW where JBL gets in the car and makes it look like he's gonna do some serious harm to Cena, was total bullshit! Anybody with with a half of a brain would know that was not real, otherwise JBL would be charged with attempted homicide.
That was plain STUPID to do that whole bit! When is there actually going to be more wrestling on RAW and less bullshit??? **sighs**

Better than the week before but still needs a lot of work. Last car crash/Cena angle just plain dumb. Again, Jake you nailed it. Man, I look forward to these reviews. Tell it like it is. Too bad WWE couldn't use you as a booker? Or writer. Anyways, not sayin to kiss ass, just the truth. As far as the flukes..I'm baffled? WHAT...Did i sleep thru some of it? Thanks again for a great review..oh yeah, Jim Duggan must need money, don't we all? Hope you never bow your head for Vince..Keep on rockin team snake!

It's really interesting from a fan's standpoint to watch a show, really like it, and then see a professional review it and point out things I wouldn't have noticed. Thank you for posting these blogs! I'm really excited about the Kane angle. It's like you said, he deserves it.

If you don't have the time to answer this no problem, but I was curious as to what you think of Paul London?

maybe it's just nostalgia talking, but I remember a lot more depth to the story-lines when you were wrestling. Everything about the current product feels shallow and predictable...maybe it's the fact that everything's been done, and there's nothing new under the sun.

I agree that once again Raw was disappointing with the lack of action.

I have a few questions for you.

If you were booking Raw who would you put the World strap on and why?

I remember years ago you were very critical of Jericho calling him Jeriblow.
What are your opinions on him now?

Much better as a heel and the angle rings true. I'm sure that you understand that a shoot is better than a work. And this with no doubt a shoot. As far as who I put the strap on, myself, or Santino. Other than that, Awesome Kong, ooopps!! Different promotion.Actually Kane would be great choice if they would leave it on him for a long period of time, it would be tremendous money in the bank. He works hard enough to deserve it.

I agree. I thought it was a decent show until the end.

I was completely baffled on JBL getting DQ'd for a save. If that's a DQ the referees haven't been doing there job in over a bilion matches because those should have ended in DQ's as well. Jerry Lawler even seemed confused by it. I think he said "I'm not sure what happened here.

I have to agree with you Jake, there are far to many missed moves, and moves half completed. Thats why there are so many injuries as of late. I seriously hope the powers that be in the front office realize this soon.
If you were to recive the call to come back into the WWE squared circle would you take it?

Jake,

It was a nice change to see people working holds and actually getting over doing it in a few matches. I have always said since working with you in Indiana that you should start your own company and show Vince what he has forgotten about the business. He needs stars and he has few right now. I hope wrestling gets back to wrestling and no just 2 hours 45 minutes of talking and video packages.

Hey Jake,
Couldn't agree more with the main event aftermath, nothing like a nice vehicular homicide to pump up ppv buys.

personally liked the Beth Pheonix and Santino match, puts Beth on a higher plain in the womens division.
just wish I could see in Santino what you do, I'll keep lookin !

Also HATED what they did to Duggan, Jim deserves to be treated a hell of a lot better. In 25 years, I've also never seen him hang his head like that, not acceptable.

Thanks for another great one.

Stay Cool,

I was expecting him to stand up for himself and hit those two assholes with the 2 X 4 and what was with the ending? it was something shocking because I haven't seen anything like that since the NWO ran the ambulance The Rock was in with a semi truck but still you are right it was stupid and plus there could have been a lot more action and less shitty storylines

I almost forgot, I think the "JBL 1st degree murder" angle that closed the show may have benefited from a stuntman subbing in for Cena and performing a Jackie Chan-like backward somersault over the hood of the parked car... the benefit being that people probably would have laughed harder.
Still, if you're going to shoot your show like a B-movie, why not shoot it like a *well-funded* B-movie? Anything would have beat the sloppy ending wherein you saw Cena simply DISAPPEAR when they cut to the other camera!

Damn, they didn't mention once that Paul London was trained by SHAWN MICHAELS (I'm 91% sure of that, anyway). Also, how often do tag matches end on a DQ for saving your partner from a submission anyway? In my sixteen years as a wrestling fan, I'd never seen it until last night. To jump to yet another topic, I also hope Punk's heading for a heel turn, for his sake. It's the ONLY way he's going to get over if they keep handing all the bigger guys his ass, with the exception of the ever-peripheral Snitsky. I fear Punk's title reign will resemble Rey Mysterio's from two years ago. I don't know if you heard or not, but in a post-air dark match after Raw, they put Punk in a non-title match against Batista, who reportedly squashed him in two and a half minutes. I wouldn't count on those in attendance last night to be shelling out 45 bucks to see that main event on Sunday night. I actually think anybody who does is just paying to see Michaels/Jericho, although I really think Triple H/Edge would have had some drawing power if they'd decided to build it up.
Are you the least bit interested, Jake, in any of the angles leading up to the Bash?

I wish RAW was like it ten years ago. Because they had much better characters such as... Big Boss Man, Stone Cold , even Jake would be cool coming back. I just don't like characters for the wrestlers anymore. But like TNA on the other hand has great characters. Such as Sting, Kevin Nash, Scott Steiner, Abyss etc.
If only WWE would bring back some greats!

I am a true fan of yours from when I was a kid, and now I find myself looking you up on "You Tube" to catch you in some matches. I caught one with you and Ric Flair from maybe the mid 70's Great match.

I just started to read your reviews of the Monday NIght Raw's and TNA Impact's and the reviews are great for a wrestling fan like me, one that loves the today wrestling but sorely misses the "back in the days" of wrestling.

I have a question for you. Have you ever thought of getting back into the wrestling world on the Creative end? Maybe booking.
You sure as hell sound like you have the mind for the business and I think you could take these younger guys and help them find not only what makes them good, but what will make them GREAT! and Rememberable!

After all, any one person who watches a DDT being givin speakes the name of Jake "The Snake" Roberts while watching some poor guys head get trashed into the mat.

yes i agree with what you said. I've been watching wwe for probably over 20 yrs , my son loves watching, they just have turned wrestling into just one big drama, but i guess that what sells the public , it's somewhat interesting to see what they will come up next, i liked it better in the days of old where they would wrestle with the holds and not so much drama, but that's t.v. it's still wrestling somewhat i keep watching so their keeping me interrested, well, hope to see you sometime when your in the colorado area.
kudos to you! your fan, steph

Right on the money Jake! Every week I record Raw and every Monday night I come home from work excited, hoping for something better and then every time I get kicked right in the nuts! The WWE has no respect for the legends that paved the way, most still viable performers and competitors, that pisses me right off! I'm not a Cena fan and I preferred JBL when he was with the Acolytes, C.M. Punk does nothing for me, nor Batista but you have to love Kane, hopefully this is something big for him and not another spectacular letdown. I dig Beth Pheonix as she can actually wrestle, she's not just there for eye candy, although I would like to climb her like a jungle gym! No matter what bullshit Vince throws on T.V. I'll watch it and he knows that.

I'm not a super hardcore wrestling fan, not like I was ten years ago... but I definitely dig your idea to do the weekly reviews. It's you old timers (whoops) who have the name power and get the attention from the wrestling fans. If enough people pay attention to what you old, old, old timers (haha, kidding) have to say... then maybe things will turn around and wrestling can get that sizzle back. Keep up the good work bud.

Here's a little food for the thought.

I liked the Beth/Santino match for one reason, unpredictability. In the predictable world of wrestling, I dare one person to tell me that they thought Beth would respond to the open challenge. I question it on the other hand because she came out as a babyface with this one. They had just turned Melina face, and now will we see the same thing with Beth? That would leave Jillian and Kat as the only lady heels on RAW. Good wrestlers, but not very credible with the crowd.

The whole parking lot angle where JBL rammed into Cena was definitely strange. I thought his fall away slam on the hood of a car would have been enough. Maybe a powerbomb on the concrete. I really hope this is the kiss off to the JBL/Cena feud. Those two were in the Fatal Four Way at Backlash, had a singles match at Judgment Day, a First Blood match at One Night Stand, and now another gimmick match at the Bash. It's time to put this baby to bed.

thanks for the add jake
I couldn't agree w/ you more vince has gone way too far for the ratings all because TNA are beating them in it I mean the idea of having a who done it w/ vince himself when it said on a wrestling website that they had stage hands push the stuff he had on that lil stage set

also I felt that the john cena dead storyline was too much they would not risk the health of one of the major players in the business today in john cena

it's like for ecw talent axl rotten said in his video he said I think that vince has gone too far to make the fans watch his program he said it sickens him to see vince do this kinda stuff for ratings or something like that

on to the subject of steph and shane begging for unity I found that pretty funny too considering vince is not dead as they planned in the storylines in fact when one of them got on the air at raw ppl laughed when steph said we need to join togather in my families time of need

anyways like I said I've been a fan of yours for awhile now and I like that there's someone who voices there opinon as much as the fans do who knows what vince will come up w/ next they hinted 'round an incest angle but I don't know if theat will take either

it's not like the ol' days back when you and the legends in this business was when it was 'bout wrestling instead of 'bout drama that's why TNA is so hot right now because they have good storylines but they actually wrestle

I mean big kev nash is one the hot ones right now sting is hott too in the business and the knockout division TNA's version of the WWE divas are doing well
they even cut a couple of promos where they say they're 'bout wrestline not just beauty contest but wrestling which I found a bad burn to vince that's why the x-divison is hot right now too b/c vince took out the cruiserweight title and plus isn't funny that many of the top guys and some the girls in TNA now were part of WWE

anywys again thanxs for the add sorry I wrote so much just thought you's like to hear an opinon from a fan of real wrestling and that's what it needs to be 'bout wrestling not anything else don't cha agree

hope to hear from you soon

first of all hi, first time here. anyway my two sence for what its worth is YES they really need more wrestling, i live in the UK and when it wasnt shown live here we got an editied version of raw on friday night which had commercial breaks every 15mins.

but watching live at 1am (or taped and watch day after) theres commercials every 5mins. they come back from a break show 5-10mins talking then another break. i figure thats what its like with most american programs but even if they put an hour of 5 10min matches and bit or promos inbetween it would be a lot better then what we get.

i like how wwe is pushing younger guys (push matt hardy more next in my opinion) and i like CM Punk but i dunno theres just something about him that doesnt quite fit the role of world heavyweight champion.

there proberly trying to use him as a "bret hart" person (squeeky clean steriod free etc) which again they need due to all the steriod crap in press but put him in the ring with guys he can wrestle with, batista and kane should throw him round the ring for fun.

atleast with john morrision(nitro) on ecw they had great wrestling matches.

on a side note i love santino, not so much as a wrestler though but i think hes golddust on the mic and gagging to be a manager. stick him with a guy(s) that cant really talk on the mic much, even sticking him with snitzky would get something out of it. Same really for JBL it make him GM of raw and stop the same matches with cena over and over.

I couldn't agree more. I posted on Tuesday how much I was enjoying the flow, the matches, pretty much everything until the last 15 minutes and it ruined the whole thing for me.

i stopped paying attention once Cena came to the ring.

But i snapped back in when the DQ happened.
I thought the same thing you said - DQ? on a save? What kind of crap are they forcing down our throats nowadays?"

So sad.

Jake, thanks so much for everything you do.

I'd love to see Punk go heal. That's the only way he can be convincing as a champion. Would be interesting to see how they make him stay "straight edge" though. He could do something sorta like what Chris Jericho is doing by taking a position that he is morally superior to all the others which could enrage the whole locker room and really bring on some heat. That woudl be a good angle for him in my opinion. As for the who Cena thing, it's a desperate move on WWE's part. A real good fued wouldn't need that kind of crap in the story line. I feel like my intelligence is truely insulted when something happens to Vince or any of the other characters. Otherwise not a bad show for me.

Hey Jake! Just wanted to write that I really enjoy your reviews of the show. Best, most insightful reviews on the net every week.

So are you going to tell us what "freak thing" you noticed that apparently escaped everybody else? Very curious.

Best,
skr

Jake, awesome review as always. I thought it was a pretty damn good show this week, but it all went to crap with that last angle. And TNA followed suit and the same thing happened at their PPV: strong show, horrible ending. You are the most trustworthy review on the 'Net, man. Keep this up, I look forward to it each and every time.

Jake dont u feel that if they would have done a dramatic JBL Vs John Cena encounter after the main even dont u feel like that instead of doing that stupid car thing...Cena should have been run over by a car....or attacked by the security men from 2 weeks ago?....then again thats just me

I am SICK TO DEATH of these unbelievable "attempted murder/exploding limo/stage accident" angles..when Stone Cold was "run over" back in 1999, he was out for a year in the storylines (we all know he had surgery); when Eddie Gilbert ran into Jerry Lawler back in the early 90's, he just rammed him enough to injure him, and put him out for a week or so..now they had JBL smash Cena's whole f'n body with a car (something BATMAN would never even live through), and now they expect for Cena to be Superman and show up this Sunday for a bullsh!t PPV? WHO BOOKED THIS SH!T?!?!?!? and WHY?!?

what happened to "I want to be the World Champion, so I'm working my way up the ladder, because I want to be recognized as the best wrestler in the world today?"

what happened to "you are in my way to the title, so I'm gonna clip your knee and put you out for 6 weeks"

why are they insulting us like this?!?

hell, why do I even bother watching anymore?...

stay up, Snake Man!

They should use the moves and strategy as gimmick opposed to telling the same stories and doing the same interviews all the time. They hotshot angles on a monthly basis instead of building the storyline throught wrestling matches and thats one of the key to make wrestling real hot again. Im sure everybody here remember the minutes of pure joy waiting for the DDT. The set up, the trap, the DDT...

I have gotten the chance to sit down and watch a wrestling show in a long, long time. But that show sounds pretty good. I believe Vince should turn Cena heel and have thought this for awhile now. When they were building heat between HHH and Cena, most or all fans would have thought that HHH would be the one to turn heel and what a great swerve it would have been to have Cena heel instead. I have heard from several workers that HHH prefers to work heel and he does do a damn good job. If I am actually off this Monday, I may just have to watch Raw.
