I only met Tony Wilson once. It was in 2000 and he was in his "Call me Anthony" period. Rigsby's manager at the time, Mark Crowther, had asked him to come and see the band play Joseph's Well in Leeds and I came up to see them and meet him beforehand. He had the children with him and decided that we needed to find somewhere to eat before the gig. Needless to say no one had booked anywhere so we spent an hour with Tony driving around all the popular eating places in Leeds and discovering that they were all full (at the weekend! who would have believed it!) so we started to head out of the city and stopped off at various curry houses etc. on the ring road. They too were full so we ended up in a big McDonalds. So we sat eating Big Macs while Tony and I discussed his new internet venture and how to make selling music online work. It was all slightly surreal. He set up Music 33 shortly afterwards but he couldn't resolve the payment issues at the time and it never quite took off. It was just slightly ahead of its time I suppose. Any way he went to see the band (comment "better than Coldplay") and put them on "In The City" later that year which was great. As I said that was the only time we sat and talked but I still recall his enthusiasm and his charm. It was wonderful to meet him and I always looked out for what he was doing afterwards. I shall miss that. He was someone special.
