Blog 1 - 'The Phantom: Legacy'

Now that we've sort of got those 'Sequel' rumors under control, I guess I can start talking about what we're doing and where the project is at.

First of all, I've got to say - this is a very exciting time. Being able to bring the first masked comic superhero back to the big screen is an absolute honor. I've been researching The Phantom intensely for the last year or so and I've been working with the support of King Features Syndicate to try and bring you the tightest possible film. Yes, this is a new look at the comic book hero, but rest assured -  He wont be 'heavily gadget man' (as that is another comic book hero named Batman) and he wont be an 'angry mob killer' (as 'The Punisher' -Frank Castle has been made into a film 3 times - remember the Dolph Lundgren film - that too was shot in Australia... old skool). He will be, without doubt 'The Phantom'. A man who has sworn an oath to protect - but at what cost?

I'm not really taking a break over the holidays - tis' the season to be writing :) but that really doesn't bother me. Even if I could take a break, I'd still only be thinking of the flick - oh and Jay Crewes's heavily spiked egg nogg which I'm missing over here! (You better save me some Jay for when I get back!!)

Apart from that, my life is as usual. I'm looking to get back to Australia early Jan (too much American food!) and hope to enjoy some of the Aussie summer.

Unfortunately I can't say too much else on the project apart from that we're ALL working very hard to do this film right. We're making choices. We're trying to keep the essence of the characters real and not get caught up in the 'wrong stuff'.

There's an actor I'd like to see play the lead role - but that's for another day.

Have an awesome festive season,

Stay safe,

Tim

I'm a long time fan of the character, loved the comic and the movie and am very much looking forward to your take. Curious who you see in the role too.

Please consult with the Swedish Phantom magazine.. they are doing the absolute best job at keeping the Phantom up to date in modern time without butchering the character.

The 1996 film was a complete disaster, I'd love to see a more adult darker movie of the character. Fear is one of his best weapons after all..

Hi.. tnx for accepting me as your friend in Myspace :-)You can view my thread in the Phantom Phorum at: http://phorum. thedan. org/viewtopic. php?t=2156. It has had 35,000 views as of now. I am terribly excited over the new Phantom movie announced by you. From my childhood (way back in the seventies), I wanted to see my favourite superhero onscreen.. but the 1996 version left a sour taste in my mouth.
Out of disgust, I had written in one of my posts, in the Phorum, on any future Phantom movie:

"1.
The Phantom be given a decent costume
2. Guran be give his basket hat back.. he should be a middle aged bloke and not a kiddish major domo
3.
Hero should be a stallion and not a mare
4.
Devil should be a fearsome wolf and not a bow legged Alsatian
5.
McGoohan should be kept out of the proceedings
6.
The Jungle Patrol should be a serious outfit, not shown chit chatting with the Phantom in the Skull Cave
7.
Diana, who ever she is played by, should not be scowling all the time

AND LAST BUT NOT LEAST, THE LEAD ACTOR SHOULD NOT SHOW HIS EYES OR ROAM AROUND HATLESS / COWLLESS WHEREVER HE GOES... HE SHOULD TRY AND INJECT SOME CHARISMA, SOME MENACE AND SOME MYSTERY IN THE PHANTOM, FOR CHRISSAKES.."

Hahaha.. guess I am a Phan of the old school.. and just can't stomach any deviations from the version of the Falk-Barry combo.

Viva el Fantasma!! And a Merry Christmas to you in advance!!

Joey
