I've been resisting posting anything about Michael on myspace, it seems a forum to tawdry to really express how profound and experience of being friends with him was. But I've been thinking about him alot lately and wanted to get some of it down.

I met  Michael in 1993/4? at the ShowOff Gallery when after a mind-blowing Noggin concert (my first) I began blathering to him about how this was the music I had been looking for. Michael quickly became one of the most important people in my life in terms of shaping my aproach to music and art and how to look at the world (especially if you find most of it alienating). He and his daughter Aral welcomed me into their lives and homes fully and without judgement. Griffenshire became a destination as soon as school was done on a friday and never wanted to leave on sunday.

Over the last fourteen years I've had the pleasure of playing music with Michael in more combinations and situations than I can remember and watched him play countless shows, with Noggin, Behead the Prophet N.L.S.L., BoneCure, Artie Smudges Trio, Bright Shiny Object, Quisp, 202 Stringz, with Joshua and on and on. Micheal always played like it was the best show ever, never lacking in enthusiasm or the missing the simple joy of making a great racket.

This is leaving out his amazing visual art, film work and the writing that he was concentrating on before his death. His is an amazing body of work

Michael died in his home early on Sunday morning of a severe lung condition, he was surrounded by his daughter Aral, Arals mother Terry, his son Adam and myself. It was very peaceful and like the rest of his life: it happened on his terms and was an amazing thing to take part in.

The world does not provide many real role models on how to live your life well and to the fullest. Thank you Michael.

Love Love Love

I thought you were only 14 when you saw Michael play, and when we met Michael we knew he would be a mentor and friend to you and we trusted him to take you with him even out of state to play music. That was a huge leap of faith for us as parents. I'm glad you could be with him and his family, and I'm proud of the bond you had.
Love Mom

corey,
this is realy sweet and personal. i am personally glad you were there when michael passed. i know he wanted as many people that were close to him as possible, and comfortable. your mom's comments are so nice to see too. if she didn't know already though, all those shows you came up to at the show off and hanging out at michael's house - you were with good people.

I first met Michael after watching him play with Behead the Prophet at the Show Off Gallery in B-Ham in 97 or so. Later, through my friendship with Corey, Danielle, Darryl and others I was invited to play with Michael in 202 Strings. I was amazed by his openess and his free approach to music "Here, Play this cello!....Doesn't matter if you haven't picked one up before." Got invited to record a show in seattle with that group, a memory that I cherish. Visited Michael with friends precious few times but always enjoyed the great warmth of the man and his home and the opportunities to play free, beautiful sounds. Thank You Michael!
