Busking=street performing. Thats what I do now. I can't get a job, so why not play some tunes!!!

I went out Saturday afternoon in downtown Ventura with my mini guitar. I played for about an hour and a half, until my finger started bleeding badly. Here are some pix that Jon took of me doing it! All together I made about 22 bucks.

The people on the street were lucky. Normally buskers, at least in my area, aren't as good as you.
I still think it's awful that you need to do something like this to make money, especially that your fingers were bleeding. but you looked good! Keep it up and you'll make it! talent like yours can't go unrewarded forever.

Holly, it breaks my heart that a lady of your talent and abilities is having to do this for a living. Everyone has to do what ever is necessary to survive, but you should be playing concert halls, not sidewalks. If I had the cash to finance you, I certainly would. I still have a merchandising thought that might bring in some bucks for you if you are free and clear to do your own thing. Let me know and I will run it by you.
Best Regards,
Doc

Wow - you'd definetly be a cool busker to see. Holly live and unplugged! :)

My mate grabs his piano (yes a full piano) and plants it in our town center and plays for the whole day. His fingers come back red raw, but it really helps him money-wise. It's great and all but i dread for the day it rains heavy. What would he do with his piano! :S

You'll get a job, u are super talented and lots of ppl think so! ur lyrics are from the heart and pour out your soul and to me that is the best kind of musician ...and I would know because I am one....the ones that aren't afraid to share their lives (good, bad and personal) in order to spread the many truths and lessons formed in song are the best! keep it up Holly! .....by the way...I'd def. pay more than 22 bucks to see you play in my area....you have heart don't let anything keep u down!

You should come to Surfers Paradise (Gold Coast; Australia). When we go out we see the same one busker on the street. He cant actually 'play' or 'sing' per say but he seems to keep himself in booze and smokes for his efforts... You would have been living in a two story house quite well after a week ;)
Although I would say that you would skip the busking and go straight to the Gold Coast entertainment centre. We are always looking for a good bands/performers to come to us down here. We always seem to get bypassed and have to track to Brisbane - which you would probably remember, I saw you perform with Fort Minor in Fortitude Valley and the Arena.
From that minute, my sister (who I DRAGGED to Fort Minor) were absolutely in love with you and your voice. For some very distressing reason, your music never made it to our radio, if it had of it would have done very well indeed. The whole country would have been in love with you.
All the best and we hope to see you back in the mother land soon.

Holly, you should do what Marie Digby did... she did acoustic covers of a bunch of songs currently charting and put them on YouTube. When people search on youtube for those popular videos, they'll see your versions too..

http://www.myspace.com/mariedigby

Then on the pages w/ the videos you make, put a link to a blog, preferably w/ a domain name, and you embed those videos on your blog. You can sign up for google adsense and make money from the ads while the covers expose your music to a wider audience. Once your blog, which should also have other music related commentary, gets enough traffic, you could sign up for ad networks like burstmedia and valueclick.

o.O Girl go find a bar or a coffee house. There are many who'd gladly hire a performer, as long as you're willing to negotiate the price, and it'll at least be better than $22.

Honestly, regression is not a good thing.

BTW, matching the hat with the outfit = spifftastic.

Being a musician is hard my husband’s one and at times it’s not easy. Have you tried open mic nights for tips? My husband has a best friend out in LA with a small Indy recorder label. I picked his brain to see if there any jobs available but it’s vary small and just run by Corey no job’s available :0(. Have you tried a temp agency? They can find you temp jobs with flexible schedules and pretty good pay you tell them what you want to make. Then they match you up with jobs since you live in LA there has to be loads of temp jobs it’s a big city. Try Addecco they are nation wide I worked for them for a while it was fun and the really cool thing about it is. Say you are working at a temp job and you need to travel for a gig you tell them you can’t work from this date to this date and they put someone to fill in for those dates and when you come back you pick right up where you left off. You should look into and see if you like it. Good Luck You are vary brave and I wish you the best.

P.s.
I know you have heard this a thousand times you have so much to offer to the music industry don't loose hope. It's just as much about talent as it is timing. You have the talent now you just have to work out the timing part.

Come back to San Francisco! The Independent, Hotel Utah, Cafe du Nord, or something like that at night. "Busk" down at Fishermans Warf and Pier 39 during the day - I'm sure the trip would pay for itself and then some! Shoot - while you're out here hit up Starry Plough or Freight & Salvage in Berkeley too! Hook up with a local like Megan Slankard. That'd be a good trip - and a great show! Hope all is well...

My random guy and why do I have the know how...

Most people don't get breaks like many of todays famous performers do. they have to work their asses off. ask Jason Mraz. ask Jonny Lang...they had to work their asses off.

I agree, you should be famous as shit. especially for your work with Fort Minor (which I think is not what you should be famous for cause you;re beyond that) BUT...

Sometimes it's hard.

I'm a really good blues guitar player and a singer songwriter and I've been playing sine I was four and I'm passionate about music...but I will most likely never make it.

I don't know what to say. Find an old 50's greyhound for cheap, have a buddy fix it up, and go on tour. you know that there are musicians who will tour with you (I know one!) and you could even take turns driving instead of hiring a bus driver... You can sell your CD's at the shows for gas money, not to mention the 4-800 bucks you could get for doing a show...

Just a thought.

All your hard work is going to pay off. Can you possibly do those smaller venues around LA or Orange County? Or is that up to your label? I know with all your friends on Myspace you should have a decent crowd. I can bring at least 5 people with me. I support you all the way!!!! I dig the long hair by the way.

BUSKING?

Holly, what are you doing out on the street? And $22? That's what... (does currency conversion) ... £10? COME TO THE UK! There is method behind the madness (maybe). There is a huge Linkin Park fan-base here, and you're either a huge fan or you're not a fan as far as I'm concerned, so almost everyone will know that Mike did his whole Fort Minor thing, and anyone who listens to "Where'd You Go" (which, by the way, I'm outraged at not hearing on video channels or the radio, likewise any "Like Blood Like Honey" tracks) and aynone who hears will go "Who is the stunning female vocalist?" and will therefore wiki you and find you!

See, you know it makes sense.

Jen
