Who Gives Kudos:

Saturday, July 11, 2009
A few nights ago we were out to dinner with some friends at the end of a long day.  There were seven of us at our table, and when we went to settle the bill at the end, the server pointed to the table next to ours (now empty) and said "the guy sitting there paid your bill".

We didn't know this guy and he was long gone by the time we discovered his incredible gesture... we were all completely stunned and so grateful.

Got me thinking about generosity... how startling it is... how awesome it is when we step out of our self-involvedness and do something for someone else, for no other reason than because we can.

I twittered about this (http://www.twitter.com/brookefraser) and challenged everyone to do a RAOK (random act of kindness) the next day, then tweet me when they'd done it.  The response has been AMAZING - so fun and so inspiring.  Funny how taking a few moments out of our day to do something good for someone changes us just as much as it helps them.  Hanging out the washing when it's not your turn... sending someone a nice card... buying the guy in front of you in the coffee line his drink... giving someone a bag full of groceries... letting the dog nap on the bed for once... helping an elderly person onto the train or across the road... these are just a few things people have done so far... Looking forward to reading many more!

I'm going on twitter whenever I can and re-tweeting what y'all are doing (RT)...
If you're not a tweeter, we can report your RAOKs by you posting them as comments on this blog...

Go for it!

B xx

Thats awesome! ... i reckon the best random act of kindness is when you do something in secret for someone, and then never mention a word of it to anyone

I was working a long, slow moving shift at a supermarket. An elderly woman was paying for her groceries at my checkout, when a younger woman came over and pulled out two blocks of chocolate and handed it to her and said 'thank you for showing me where the cat food was, If only there were more beautiful people like you in the world'.
I was so in awe, and even more so when there was a $50 note in between the chocolates! I looked at the older woman and she was crying. It was the most touching thing Ive ever seen, I almost cried myself!
Now I just need to get out there and start sharing kindness myself! Its amazing that all these people reading your tweets are making others feel the way this elderly woman did.

Aww that is really nice. I have always been one of those people who want to help others. It's one of the reasons i want to be a midwife. Sometimes, i get caught up in my own dramas, just like everyone i guess. But i never take my life for granted and i appreciate what i have. I think about people who live in poverty a lot, epecially when i complain about stuff and then i realise how lucky i am.

well, yesterday , i just took a bottle of nail polish that my grandma had on the dresser and i started painting her toe nails and finger nails for her. She was happy, i know she felt sexy for my grand dad after i painted her nails lol....... anyway, that was my very small RAOK . However the RAOK that the individual at the restaurant did for you and ur six freinds was just amazing .

before i read your tweet about this, i was randomly thinkin about it. that same day, a kid vendor bargained me the flowers he's selling and i gave him money instead and let him keep the flowers. i told him "sell that to someone else". i figured if he'll be able to have it sold, he can earn some more. it's a very enlightening feeling to be able to help. =) strange though, same thoughts hanging around. =)
keep it going brooke. you and your friends are a great inspiration to us.

Hi Brooke my name is Stacey and here is my little tale:
I took a Greyhound bus on Thursday from San Fran to Los Angeles. To pass the time I started making friendship bracelets which I learnt how to do while working at a summer camp here in the USA. After some time sitting in a seat alone a young girl traveling with her family sat down next to me. I was tempted to say nothing and keep to myself as one usually does when their tired and cranky on public transport. However I kept getting prompted to talk to her so I did, I asked if she knew how to make the bracelets I was making which got us talking and I eventually taught her how to make some. Turned out it was her Birthday so I gave her the bracelet I had been working on and some extra string to take home with her. It wasn't much but I hope it brought her a little joy during the long bus trip.

Open Skies Painted

When I was in school, about the last two months of it. . When it was lunch time, I would hold the cafeteria door for the people and I would make sure that everyone ate before I did. And then i would go eat, however before starting to this i struggle in my mind saying "I'm gonna look stupid!" who cares, i did it anyways =)
