The area became known as "tent city" after 12 tents were pitched
.. E IIMA -->.. S SF -->Residents living near an Oxfordshire beauty spot have raised concerns about the number of tents being used by homeless people living on the site.

The area in Osney in west Oxford has become known as "tent city" since a dozen tents were pitched there.

Locals claim walking through the area has become intimidating and that the campsite is an unhygienic eyesore.

But one homeless man, known as "Snowy", insisted his rubbish was being recycled and the camp was not unhygienic. .. E SF -->

Local Labour councillor Susanna Pressel said she had received complaints about the site on the Thames towpath between the station and Osney Lock.

"I'm very sad to hear some people are so intimidated that they don't dare walk past now," she said.

Resident Maureen Ergeneli added: "I'm frightened of it getting too big because of the hygiene side of it."

But Snowy said he had a chemical toilet and that hygiene was not a problem on the site.

Resident Josephine Knight-Jacobs added: "Tent city should be left alone because Snowy has been no problem to me and he is obviously a homeless person without anywhere else to go."

Oxford City Council said its planning department was looking into the apparent change of use of the field.
