WHO ELSE?
First Published 'Testament of Lael' (1993)
He was a man, if not of means, certainly of meanings.
The face told a sorry story...a lifetime of beginnings and endings but, unfortunately, next to no middles. The eyes held what very little plot there was, a sad one at that, limned with lost chances and fruitless ambitions. The jaw was set in a fleshy bivouac of despair, the nose a reluctant pioneer of the air.
Hands shook on shaking. I could tell immediately that he lacked grasp as well as feeling. The fingers slipped like pink eels from mine. The eyes looked as if they had by now swivelled round in their sockets, but scrutinising the brain seemed to be taking introversion a little too far.
Whatever the case, I needed to make the best of a bad job. I couldn't afford to be in two minds about such a moment of historical and religious significance. Who else was there? I told him what to do. I showed him how to counteract the various shortcomings of the barely foolproof, hardly failsafe system and warned him of the possible side effects on him personally. Finally, I told him where I could be contacted in the event of an unexpected life or death emergency.
So, after several last minute pep talks, I returned to my station by the cross. I did not even grant him a last glance for the road, in case his eyes had swivelled back and were appealing to me. In two minds, I merely left the room and the control desk in his sole care.
After all, who else was there? In fact, one might ask who else am I?

The long and the short of it was (and still is, I suppose) that the whole affair went well. I needn't have worried. He put up a good show. The holograms he controlled from the console were simply perfect (well they fooled most of the people most of the next millennium). And even the vinegary sponge looked pretty life-like.
I'm the bee's knees now. After all, delegation is the art of good management. And at least I didn't suffer the side effects, did I? At worst in two minds, I was never to suffer the crude reality of being the two bodies strung up for the show of suiting the story I'd earlier misconcocted.
I was merely the myth in the middle.
