Lingerie Bowl Casting draws 230 "Scorching" women

Unexpectedly, there were no cleats, sets of padding, or exposed bra and panty sets at the Lingerie Bowl casting Saturday night at Jackrabbit Supper Club & Lounge in Scottsdale.

Some of the city's best looking citizens packed the bar by 10 p.m., hoping to witness women in risqué negligees, interviewing to be on the 13-member Phoenix Scorch.

But the future Lingerie Bowl competitors didn't exactly dress for the occasion. Instead of bras, panties and copious amounts of strategically placed padding, they just wore cocktail dresses and heels.  --> --> --> --> --> -->--> -->

This was the first casting this year for the Phoenix team and it drew 230 women competing for the chance to play the Los Angeles Temptations the night before Super Bowl XLII, which will be played at University of Phoenix Stadium in Glendale Feb. 3.

The winner of that pre-Super Bowl game will play at an alternate location during the Super Bowl halftime in the fifth annual Horizon Productions Lingerie Bowl.

Many of the Lingerie Bowl hopefuls were former athletes or members of the military, as an athletic background is a prerequisite for making the team.

One of those former military members, Phoenix promotional model Tammy Williams, 25, came to Jackrabbit in a fitted dress that showed off her shapely arms and legs.

She'd heard about the Lingerie Bowl four years ago and since then, has been waiting for her chance.

"I love the fact that beautiful women can be playing a full-contact sport on the field, but also be able to maintain a sense of femininity," said Williams, whose favorite footballer is Emmitt Smith.

The casting call at Jackrabbit was the visual round, said executive creator and producer of the Lingerie Bowl, Mitch Mortoza. Casting agents took a Polaroid, had the women fill out forms listing their names, measurements, heights, addresses, emails and cell numbers. Then they asked the women to name their favorite NFL team.

The Phoenix Scorch will be made up of women using the same formula promoters employed for the other teams, including the Chicago Bliss and the New York Euphoria, "an essence of sex appeal, beauty and an athletic background," according to Mortoza.

Round-two callbacks will take place in mid-September and include a test of agility and stamina.

"They have to show they can run, pass and tackle," said Mortoza.

With partners including ESPN and Maxim, the Lingerie Bowl has sparked interest across the Valley for months, and production coordinator Dave Lawson said organizers have received 1,200 bios from Valley women in the last week alone.

Mortoza said he hopes to create an "adult Disneyland" in Scottsdale during Super Bowl weekend. His Hollywood-based production company announced plans in April to host a block party from Jan. 31-Feb. 2 along Third Avenue, east of Scottsdale Road, and part of Buckboard Trail. But they've since submitted a special events permit application to host Lingerie Bowl Experience Village at Continental Golf Course on Osborn Road in Scottsdale, on Feb. 1-3.

"There will be a two-day music and football red carpet event that appeals to the MTV generation and will include iconic-level musicians, NFL greats and lots of Lingerie Bowl practices and games," he said.

The third day is the actual match. Expected attendance is listed on the applications at 15,000.

This is all a prelude to the start of the first season of the Lingerie Football League, which launches at 10-game, 10-team season Sept. 5, 2008.

Lingerie Bowl hopeful Keasha Kessler, 26, of Scottsdale, said she'd make a great competitor because she's not afraid to tackle anything. The model and IT analyst has modeled lingerie was a track star at Savannah State University in Georgia when she went to school there.

And while not a huge football fan herself, she says she knows a lot about the game, "My experience with football consisted of an ex-husband who never changed the channel."
