OK, where am I at with this raw life thing. I have this beautiful body at 8 months pregnant, at 40 years old, pregnant with my 5th child! A beautiful belly, strong muscles, lean, I can still run – I don't, except when I need to catch a wayward child or run for a phone call, that kind of thing. I am hiking and swimming and doing yoga and my own version of third trimester pregnancy aerobics which I'm working on putting on DVD.

I am wearing belly shirts, showing my big round belly off everywhere I go, and I get so many compliments on it. It is a bit shocking I know. Women don't often walk around with bare pregnant midriffs! This is the first pregnancy I've done it. But I see people light up when they see it....

You look amazing! I love when pregnant woman show there bellies, and I did the same thing.  I hard that exposing your belly to sun during pregnancy was a great thing to do anyway!

You are a true woman, Jinji.  I admire you greatly.  I had my last baby 11 years ago (I'm 39), and have wished to have more since.  I began eating a 100% raw vegan about a month ago and I am floored at how amazing I feel and look.  I have wanted to be 120 pounds for so long.  Well now I am!  I think I will feel & look better and better as time goes on.  Question: Do you eat raw honey?  Do you eat much dried fruit?  Anyway, you are an inspiration to my soul.  I will send loving thoughts for your labor and delivery.  Peace & Joy,  Laura

Thanks so much for all the comments! :)

Congratulations to you also on your success!!! To answer your questions, I do eat raw honey, but I keep dried fruit to a minimum - some raisins once in a while. I find they can make me bloat. And I think they're hard on the teeth.

Hi Miranda,

I'm glad you asked me about the circumcision question. It is one of those backwards dyslexic things mankind came up with: "Hey, let's keep the penis clean by cutting off the foreskin!" - the Universe answers: ....Ummm, guess what? The foreskin is there to protect and keep the penis clean! Duh!!!

It is kindof like the way we came up with "Hey, let's kill the food with heat before we eat it so that it won't have any germs and won't decompose!" ----Um, yeah, but when you take out the death force, you also remove the life force! Hello!!!

Here is an article I wrote about circumcision a few years ago....

"The Circumcision Question"

by Jinjee Talifero

11/29/05

Antiquated Practices

Is cicumcision necessary? When we didn't have access to hot and cold running water in our homes and a bath was an annual affair circumcision may have been served a purpose preventing infection. However now that most people in our part of the world wash daily there is no need for such a barbaric practice.

Similarly eating meat was necessary during the cold seasons or drought when fresh food was not available. But these days we have access to fresh food all year long so there is no need for eating meat, a secondary food.

What a Welcome

When the first thing a baby boy experiences in this world is the chopping off of his most sensitive body part is it any wonder that our men are desensitized to the point where they can go to war and kill other human beings? "What a welcome!" says Frederic Leboyer in his wonderful book "Birth Without Violence". Leboyer also says that no anesthesia is used because doctors are taught that "babies don't feel pain". Any Mother who hears the screams of her baby undergoing this surgery knows otherwise.

Long Term Effects of Circumcision Considered

Could it be that the desensitization of the male member that results from circumcision contributes to an inability to be fully satistfied and therefore leads to the insatiable appetite for pornography in the western world?

From a naturalist standpoint if a penis is meant to feel certain things during intercourse and then doesn't feel them wouldn't that leave a man frustrated? From this standpoint is circumcision in many ways a male version of the female genital mutilation that we protest so strongly against in parts of Africa and the middle east? Note that women attain sexual pleasure without their clitoris even though the clitoris is the most sensitive part of the female sexual organs.

Dr. Kellogg of Kellogg cereal fame dictated that circumcision should become routine in hospitals in America because it would reduce the desire to masturbate as the penis would be less sensitive. A sick and twisted puritanical idea, however well-intentioned.

The Biblical Standpoint

Many people still circumcise because they are led to believe that the bible instructs it. I searched the bible for "circumcision" on biblegateway.com and I read through all the references to circumcision in the bible as well as the chapters they were referenced from. The text in the bible on circumcision is mostly very situation-specific and could be interpreted in many different ways. For instance to me the strongest and most pertinent passages about circumcision say that circumcision of the body makes no difference to God. Here is one of those passages from Romans 2:29

"A man is not a Jew if he is only one outwardly, nor is circumcision merely outward and physical. No, a man is a Jew if he is one inwardly; and circumcision is circumcision of the heart, by the Spirit, not by the written code. Such a man's praise is not from men, but from God".

The Medical Standpoint

It turns out that circumcision doesn't help prevent infection but rather contributes to numerous problems especially with infants! Here is one of several revealing articles from the scientific and medical community.

BRITISH JOURNAL OF UROLOGY, Volume 80, Number 5: Pages 776-782,
November 1997.

Variability in penile appearance and penile findings: a prospective study.

R. S. VAN HOWE
Department of Pediatrics, Marshfield Clinic, Minoqua, Wisconsin, USA

http://www.cirp.org/library/complications/vanhowe/

Patients and methods The study comprised a consecutive sample of 468 boys whose consultation with a physician included a genital examination in a primary care paediatric practice in rural northern Wisconsin.

Results Circumcised boys under 3 years of age were significantly more likely to have a partially or completely covered glans, a reddened meatus, balanitis, or trapped epithelial debris, and less likely to have a fully exposed glans than were circumcised boys of 3 years or older. Among the 238 boys under 3 years, those circumcised were significantly more likely to have non-cosmetic problems, including coronal adhesions, trapped epithelial debris, a reddened meatus, preputial stenosis (phimosis) and balanitis than were boys with a foreskin. Findings in the circumcised group under 3 years included: fully exposed glans (n=78, 35.6%), partially covered glans (n=67, 30.6%), adhesions (25.6%), completely covered glans (20.1%), entrapped desquamated epithelial debris (24.7%), reddened meatus (19.1%), balanitis (15.5%), and preputial stenosis (0.9%). Only two genital examinations in boys with foreskins revealed pertinent findings. Coronal adhesions develop in circumcised boys at 2-6 months of age and usually resolve by 24 months. The degree of skin covering the glans after neonatal circumcision peaks at 6 months of age.

The circumcised penis requires more care than the intact penis during the first 3 years of life. Parents should be instructed to retract and clean any skin covering the glans in circumcised boys to prevent adhesions forming and debris for accumulating. Penile inflammation (balanitis) may be more common in circumcised boys; preputial stenosis (phimosis) affects circumcised boys and intact boys with equal frequency. The revision of circumcision for purely cosmetic reasons should be discouraged on both medical and ethical grounds.

End Male Genital Mutilation!

~ it doesn't prevent infection

~ the bible doesn't require it

~ it decreases sensitivity

~ it is not natural

~ the medical community makes around $60,000,000 a year from circumcision. (1.25 million circumcisions multiplied by the approximately $50 operation)

~ celebrated physician Dr. Dean Edell is opposed to it. See his shocking article at

http://www.healthcentral.com/drdean/408/9985.html

~ Dr. Spock is now opposed to it

~ American Academy of Pediatrics has issued new recommendations saying that they do not recommend circumcision as a routine procedure.

~ Mothers Against Circumcision have an excellent website with a huge amount of information

http://www.mothersagainstcirc.org/

~ This is a human rights issue

~ This is an ethical issue (causing pain to newborns)

I hope this article will help raise awareness of this issue. I hope it will inspire some to action. And I hope that it will help expecting mothers make the decision to leave their boy children intact and without trauma on their first day of life!

Dr. Dean Edell also takes a stand against circumcision!
http://www.healthcentral.com/ency/408/002998.html

Note: New studies also show that circumcision causes the penis to become uncomfortably dry and cracked in elderly men.

Wake up!!!

Jinjee, Thanks for the info.

I'm coming to you a year late with my response because I just found this!

In your address on the Biblical standpoint, you address the Christian Biblical perspective, but not the Jewish one.

Jews are required in the Torah to circumcise baby boys on the eighth day. Mohels, perhaps not all, these days do use local anesthesia.

Myself, a Jewish mom-to-be, I'm wondering if there's a midway point. Something that doesn't remove as much of the foreskin as the traditional circ. Or if there's a token (not actual) "circ" to fulfill religious ritual obligations.

I'm sure, though, you would be opposed to any circumcision of any kind, and I respect that view.

style="BACKGROUND-COLOR: #ff9966">Hi Jinjee, I totally agree with you.

circumcision is unnecessary and in my opinion horrible.

I live in Israel, and people who aren't even religious or believe in god still do it: I think it's more like a cultural thing to them. but if I ever have a son either way i'm not going to do that to him.

style="BACKGROUND-COLOR: #ffcc33">I really love your life style, and hopefully one day I would like to become a full raw-vegan as well, at the moment i'm only vegetarian and try to eat as much raw- vegan food as I can.

<P>Celebraton for you Jinjee,</P><P>I mean that in the way that I am 40 years old, a 14 year homeschooling mother of 4, having my 5th child also. I am 11 weeks. I remebered when you shared that you were pregnant and went through a little lets get ready, for this journey process, and so have I. I had no idea I would become become  pregnant also. I thought I was finished. I have a dd 14, another dd 11, a ds 8 and a dd 6. I came upon raw, and have written about my thyroid condition to you and many raw groups. I had surgery December 28. I continue high raw due to its benefits and my fear of gaining weight. I am 5ft 8inches, and 185 pound since pregnancy, I gained 5 pounds. I spend 27 years 5ft 8in between 121-135lbs. I never struggled with weight. My first child I gained 120 pounds, at 20 weeks I went 6 pounds a week until delievery at 42 weeks. I returned to 145 pounds and I gained 100 pounds the nest pregancy, I returned to 160 pounds and pregnant again. I gained 90 pounds and at my sons age of 9 months I was pregnan again at 180 I missed carried and six weeks later pregnantwith my last. The last two children are 2 years apart. I am now 6 years and still 180 lbs. I only gained 40 pound with my fourth pregnacy where I started doing triathlons. I train through my whole pregnancy for my first triathlon. I did it when the  baby was 3 months and I did it in 2hours 13 minutes with my swim under 15mins for the sprint. </P><P>I fear what? When I see you and read your story I only want to meet my challenges. I know I am not alone. I feel alone. My children enjoy raw with me, but my husband lives a different life. He is a family physician and is good with SAD he enjoys the benefit of the raw diet but lives the SAD one. He has done raw with our group Make Mine RAw for three months and loved the benefits. But he does not desire to be raw, and I feel guilty on both sides. He excepted my vegetarien ways when we met, and has sideline support me on my  way to raw, but I seem to feel so outside in my endeavors, homebirth, but committed, homeschool committed, 100 raw eating challenged. But he sees, I do not know what he sees. But I see me faultering not to make too much more of an opposition in our lives. You walk strong and I can too.</P><P>I love and respect you as an instrument of God, I believe God moves his power through human beings. I know as a natural birth mother, at home births, breasting feeding, homeschooling, loving and living my life I have touched many people. I am happy you are hear in cyberspace for me. I work to come to one of you and Storms retreats one day soon. You are gorgeous. I see me through you.</P><P>Do you know where vericose viens come from? My husband does not. If diet will take them away? </P><P>Thank You </P><P>Imani Olubayo Folayan (one who has faith, in the highest joy, and walks with it in dignity)</P>

Jinjee,

I love the new pic. Also love the belly shot. I am pregnant right now myself. Will be 30weeks tomorrow :-) I have been vegan for about 8 years and have been working towards going fully raw for the past few months. I have noticed such a huge difference. I actually am at the point where I don't want the cooked food anymore. I eat the stuff and suffer the next day. Aslo the way the baby reacts to raw food is completely different. When I eat raw I notice almost instantly the baby starts moving. Seeing your family has been a huge inspiration for me. I love the newsletter too and the recipes. It certainly helps making the food intersting.

Love & positive energy,
Lori-Ann

Circumcision obviosly has a spiritual meaning to God, otherwise He would have never instructed it. Eventhought it may seem cruel to hurt a baby that way, God, who is the creator knows best. One thing I heard is that the prothrombin shows that on the 8th day is when the human body has the least risk of having an hemorrhage than in any other time in their lives. It has also been proven that the reason the Jewish women don't get uterine cancer is because the male is circumcised on the 8th day. The word of God is not be questioned but to be obeyed.

Another study, published in the journal Pediatrics in November 2006, followed 510 New Zealand
newborns until age 25 and found that circumcision cut the risk of contracting sexually
transmitted diseases by about half.
These studies are just the latest to point to circumcision's potential health benefits.
There have been many over the years showing that circumcised males have lower rates of urinary
tract infections, penile cancer and a variety of STDs, including HIV.

Jinjee you look magnificant. I am so excited about your upcoming delivery. I cannot wait to hear what comes, as the sexes so far have alternated. My pregnancies were all on SAD, with a lot of unhealthy weight gain, etc. I cannot have any more children now, but often wonder how it would have turned out for me with the better diet and lifestyle.

I have mixed feelings about circumcision. We are Jewish Believers and the Old Testament law instructs it on the 8th day of life, which is what we have done. I know that the old law is no longer pertinent for salvation but many of those laws have been set by the Almighty for the health and good of the nation, so it's a tough call. I don't regret doing it though. I respect anyone's decision to do what they feel is right for them and their loved ones.

Many blessings to you and your beautiful family!

Hello! I am the only raw vegan in my family. I am the mother of seven - oldest just turned 23 on 24 May, the youngest is five. I was 42 when my youngest was born. All were born at home, although I had a midwife. She always said she wasn't sure why she was there - my pregnancies and deliveries were so easy. I am also homeschooling - since 1990. The one thing I found helped me the most was to put my tongue on the roof of my mouth. This relaxed my jaw. If I felt like making any noise, I tried to keep it at a lower decibel, like a growl almost. This also kept me from tensing up. Anyway, you are a pro at all this and will do well. Enjoy!

Hi Jinjee I have been following your Gradenfamily web site now since last year when i began body cleansing and some fasting. I have been on an ongoing path to health and renewing my body. I was most inspired by your pregnancies and how strong and vibrant your are. I had surgery for a bicornuate uterus after miscarrying 5 times and loosing a my first child at almost 6 months. Also took my new outlook on my health after having been submitted to a various procedures for moderate cervical dysplasia, which has weakend my already weak cervix. On this personal note you have inspired me to heal after all these procedures. I am very interested in finding out more about how raw vegan life can heal the female reproductive system especially after issues of infertility or the like. I do not have a child as of yet and I am preparing my body to be strong enough to have a successful pregnancy by taking the raw vegan lifestyle into strong consideration and practice, but i know it is a process and I welcome your insiparation into mylife.

Thank you so much for sharing you and your family's stories.

I love your pregnancy photos. I too had a baby in May, on the 29th, a girl we named Violet Ray. She was conceived at 8,000 feet on Mt. Shasta. I gave birth at home in Shasta, it was amazing. I spent about two months of my pregnancy raw but found it hard to continue. I have been off and on raw for about thirteen years. I discovered raw after my first child was born. Your website has really inspired me to make the commitment to a living foods lifestyle, and to feed Violet raw foods. Thanks for sharing your photos and stories! Much Love Kymberly
