Humeur actuelle :inspired
I was listening to one of my favourite albums of alll time tonight and I realized I very rarely talk about it or mention it when I descirbe my decision to make a double album and specifically a concept one.

The album I hail as one of my favorites of all time is actually a Eurythmics album called 'Savage'
. At the time, it was very misunderstood. I don't know if it did well in the charts but I know it was a shock for a lot of mainstream pop listeners who expected the band to churn out another 'Miracle of Love' or 'Missonary Man'. This was a deeply disturbing and pyschological journey of a woman. I dare not presume exactly what the exact stories described - but to me it seemed to speak for downtrodden women and particuarly the sort of disenfranchised female uber class who were delegated the role of sophisticated house wife but were in fact miserable.

With lines like 'I wear this unhappiness, like a chain around my neck' and 'I wish I was invisible so I could climb through the telephone.. don't cut me down when I'm talking to you...' The album seemed to be this beacon of hope, perhaps dimming in strength, but never the less emitting a pulse out of the heart of a woman beaten down by domesticity.

From the first insane beats of 'I love to listen to beethoven' to the heart wrenching 'You have placed a chill in my heart' this album is truly conceptual. The music videos were all linked and featured, essentially 3 characters. The mad houswife, the crazy alter ego uber tart and of course, Annie.

If you haven't listened to this album and you wanted to connect the dots from a piece of art that inspired the record I made, do check it out.

Annie has a new album coming soon.
Songs of mass destruction.
What a gorgeous title.

On that note, I'm off.

With love
D

Just out of curiosity Darren, do you think that people who don't listen to the musicians who have inspired you (or this album) can't truly understand your music as well as someone who does listen to your musical inspirations?

I mean, I respect people like Annie Lenox, but she's just not one of my favorites...so in saying I don't listen to her music, do you think I'm missing something from your music?

Geez, I'm not entirely sure if I'm phrasing this the way I mean.

Oh of course not!
In fact, it would be pretty boring if my records were just pale immitations of better things.
I think I wanted to reveal some inspirations because very often I think the 'root' of my
jump off point is often very disguised..

Want some more?

Truly Madly Deeply came from Prince's 'The Most Beautiful Girl in the world'.
The songs sound nothing alike.. but there you go!

Music is so specific.
I think it's a miracle we can all agree on any of it really..
But somehow we do!

Thanks for the insight Darren.

I'm truly loving Delicate and I didn't feel like I was missing something, but this blog just made me stop and think..."maybe I am."

I do agree, music is quite specific and there is so much of it to choose from (that's why it irritates me that radio stations seem to pick 20 and rotate the crap out of them), but I never wanted to be the kind of person who listens to something "just because my favorite popstar (or tart if you prefer :P) does." Not that I'm closed off to listening to something someone recommends, I just never felt a strong draw to Annie Lennox...now Prince is another story :)

i love that you love this record. I love this record, and I fell in love with this record around the time I was just beginning to really appreciate good music. It got a decent amount of play on MTV in the states, but I remember thinking it was too artistic to be gotten by most people. I remember buying the tape and the smell of the paper used in the cover & liner notes - it was a very specific paper that had a very unique feel and smell. I still listen to this record quite a bit, and it always brings a flood of memories back. It tells a story, has a arch, and imparts you with a sense of emotion all too familiar with life.

Darren, I love the new record. I'm so glad that I've gotten to interview you a few times, and so very proud of what you have accomplished with this opus. The songs have taken me on my own time machine to the place where I grew up, and back to the choices (good, bad and otherwise!) I have made along the way. It's been painful, euphoric, scary and ecstatic, and I wouldn't have it any other way.

Bless...

Hi Darren!
Thanks for the info. I do remember the Eurythmics album 'Savage'. Great one!! Of course, I'm a fan of Annie Lenox as well. She's also listed on my profile, so I receive blogs from her as well. She recently blogged about that album. Also, about the new album in the works/possible tour. She mentioned a site she's working on that will have her collectables. Visit her profile(if you haven't already), and you'll have the info on that. It sounds awesome!
Sending you much love!!

I suspect many mainstream pop listeners aren't actually listening to music. LOL There's always room for fluff, but I can't tolerate a steady diet of it. I was intrigued by Annie from the first video. Along with Cyndi Lauper, Aimee Mann & Madonna she validated the fact that women can be women in any way they choose to be. Great thing is they're all pretty much doing the same thing 20+ years on.
A friend of mine grew up in the early 60's in the suburbs & found out years later that the women of the neighborhood called it 'the ghetto' because they all felt trapped in their perfect houses with the manicured lawns.

I love when my favorite musicians make posts like this. Not only does it give insight but sometimes I find out about new (to me) music. I mean, I've heard OF the Eurythmics before, obviously, but the only song I've ever heard was 'Sweet Dreams Are Made of These' (And I'm not even sure that's the real title, lol). And you've got a great track record so far--you're the reason I know about Temposhark and I heart them :)

i will definitly have to look up these songs you mention. sounds like something i can relate to on a personal level. and being able to relate it to my own life is all it takes for me to like a song. doesnt matter the genre... im a lyrics lover. which is why my tastes span from korn to you to michael jackson to marilyn mansen... oh crap just dont ask me to spell their names right... i have a tendency to not really be a fan of any one particular artist. i tend to be a fan of particular songs and usually never learn the name of the artist or band. you are just one of those bizaar individuals who seem to crank out song after song of complete relatability for me. if i remember though.. annie lenox is one i always like the music of back in the 80's .. before my life really began. Im sure i can relate to it even more now. thanks for the tip.. ill have to go back and relisten to all her work.

Certainly with this Savage I used to try and relate some of the lyrics to personal experience, which she does make easy to do, not in an obvious and lame way.. that was then, though me personally can do that with many songs if they are from great lyricists.. take some of your songs for example.. Im thinking on sing to me for example.. im probably barking up the wrong tree.. but to me that seems like closure on one life 'Savage' to the next phase. Like i said being a cat person.. wrong trees and barking! See you soon D x

I listened to those Eurythmic songs on youtube they are truly amazing songs.

The mention of connecting the dots spun me out, I wrote a blog called 'Connecting Those Dots' at the beginning of August. The mention of dots always brings to mind the unforgettable quote from the movie 'Latter Days' - "Sometimes it all still feels like a mass of dots, but more and more these days I feel like we're all connected. And it's beautiful, and funny.. and good."

Thankyou.

I have to be honest, growing up I was a bit of a Eurythmics fan as well. Even though as a kid I listened deep to every lyric, even though I wasnt sure what it all meant. But I listened to some of her songs recently, and it actually made alot more sense to me. In many ways, maybe its not just a message being sent, but a book being written, word for word how being someone, yet powerful enough to bring her heart into song, can still feel like she's trapped on the inside, and not even sure if she break out (and her only way is by singing).

Thank you so much for this blog.
I haven't heard Savage but now I most definitely need to grab a listen.
The strength of concept albums like this is in being able to speak to the millions thorugh an example of one. I know nothing about creating musical art ( though I most definitely know how to feel and appreciate it). But I do know about teaching kids - they need to hear, see and experience the same concept in a number of forms and situations to allow them to generalise what they know, to retain it and to act on it. So it is also with music, and allowing the listener to experience soundscapes that build and elaborate on each other is such a powerful thing.

This Delicate Thing We've Made, for me, does all this..it is also a beacon of hope for anyone beaten down by life experiences and unsure of the path out of darkness. Thank you for creating it.

xLynne

It's really interesting to know the ones who inspire the artists we adore! Music is not a repeting thing (not always! lol) but the answer to "why some want to make music?" is always: they are crazy music listeners!!

Concerning Annie Lennox, her new single "Dark road" is a really wonderful sensitive pop tune.

I have listenend Eurithmics on and off when i was a kid, mainly cus i had to listen what my older cousin had as i didn't have money to buy music then.
My biggest vehicle was Mtv, and i think I remember that video right now.
Annie Lennox has written one of my fave songs about vampires and i remember loving the sound of that song in particular. The words I cannot remember them as i didnt speak english at the time but the sound always stayed with me.

I was thinking some days ago how being sad weights on your heart, it is like you swallowed a rock and when you are happy you'd feel light!
I am wondering what cause that weight feeling if it is something physical or if the soul can really get heavier...

Thanks for your insights

I have loved Savage since 1987 when it came out. True it only had a modest commercial success, but it exposed me (and I'm sure others) to the beauty of emotive writing with pop/dance backing. It fuses commerciality and pop with experimentalism and emotion on so many levels . . . a stunning CD and a (often overlooked) jewel in Annie Lennox and Dave Stewart's respective crowns.

What a buzz for me to hear you, Darren, find this album inspirational also. Thanks for sharing your thoughts!

D, I know you're probably sick to death of questions, but can I ask you this (cos I thought of one while listening to more and more of the Fairlight on the album): Apart from you, Kate Bush, and Iva Davies (Icehouse), I googled it and the Eurythymics used it. Did they use the Fairlight on Savage? Annie Lennox is inspiring, she's up there as one of my favourite female vocalists too. Also, is it just me but have all those different caricatures of women who represent different classes of women and their different looks inspire the recent Tori Amos album (American Doll Posse)? xo
