Category: Music
Random thoughts.

I sat down to get a haircut today and the hairdresser asked immediately.. 'What do you do?'. I was perplexed and said 'I, err, make music I guess'. Suddenly his eyes lit up and he was playing the fame game. 'Are you someone famous?' he asked. I sighed. He continued..'Forgive me, I don't keep up with the charts'. Clearly he did. I found myself at a crossroads. Do I dutifully explain my life's work or simply shrug it off? Did it matter if he knew who I was or what I did? I stopped the line of questioning by saying 'I could be, but probably not.. Where are you FROM?'.

He was from San Lous Obispo.
I told him I was from London.
Via San Francisco.
Via New York.
Via Brisbane.

Are we just what we 'do'?
I hope to be more than what I do.

I had a conversation today with a wise friend who told me that my life has been the search for authenticity. Trying to remain an artist in a commercial world, is a difficult path..I've managed to remain authentic at great personal cost. But oh how it's been worth it.

I visited my friend Spike in the studio today..
He's been working on the new M album and I hadn't seen him for 2 years.
He's another Englishman I adore. He and Willie Williams are mentors to me.
What is it about the English? They seem to dot my path like paper lanterns.

I find myself turning to thoughts of home and the pasing of time.
I look around at these American streets and I remember a boy who first came here with a fire in his soul and a chip on his shoulder.

"And the question is, was i more alive
than i am now?
I happily have to disagree;
I laugh more often now, i cry more often now,
I am more me"

I've been a fan of yours since the early days of SG. I commend you on being true to yourself. I am an even greater fan of yours because of it. Words aren't adequate to describe how much I admire you as a person... aside from how your voice and music touch me...

Much love & respect always,

What you do, and what you've always done... helps people. I just wish you could see that... you make it sound as if what you "do" is some small matter, as if it is just "making music" but it's so much more than that... where would I be today without that music in my darkest times? Not just your music, I had books, too... but your music was such an important part of my escape from a very unhappy reality.... Even if you were "what you do"... you'd still be a Saint..... but of course there's even more to you than that, amazing.

"Are you someone famous?" bless! lol You should have told him you were that guy who use to be in Savage Garden.hehe
It is such a shame that more people aren't exposed to your beautiful delicate music.
I highly admire the fact that you have chosen to remain authentic a rarity these days.
It sounds from this insightful blog you have read as many self help books as me;)
I love how you articulate your thoughts it truely is a gift. You would make a great writer!

Speaking of which, the following line from the previous blog sounds like it belongs in one of your songs: "What is it about the English? They seem to dot my path like paper lanterns"

Thanks for sharing this D,
I have moved from my country myself, following a dream, a dream called England i had since i was three.
I dont think we are our profession, or our artistry, or our religion, we are a part of all, we come here to experience life, as here i mean this world.
Life has so many faces and i think we come here to make our joy in a physical form.
That is what is life about to me, being happy, alive, giving love.
You give it through music sometimes, not all the times tho. So... how do you measure your success?

In a book I read recently I found he answer I could not find in words but only felt: Through our happyness, how happy, comtempt, alive we feel. I think you are the most successful artist i have ever known. You stood up by yourself, you made the music you loved and you have many many people finding inspiration in it!

Today someone special asked me out, *giggles* he doesn't have to be a popstar to make me feel the luckiest go in the world. He makes me happy, and laugh he is my measure of success.

I dunno if you get what i mean, I struggle explaining myself sometimes.

I just think, what we manage to achieve that bring us joy, it is our measure of success.
It isnt in money, in power, in fame, in charme... I simply measure my success in joy n love i feel, in both good times and bad times.
Have you ever noticed how even in the worst of times someone can bring a small light of joy?
Isn't that a success?

Ok randomed too much here xxxxx

Thankfully you know that your are more than this and you are more than that.

And your friend's comment about your search is what has come through each album, a chronology of Darren shared with the world over time.

The chip never goes away. It just gets better understood.

Sorry to write another post but I had to add this;) because your beautiful thoughts made me think of this song:

"I traded fame for love
Without a second thought
It all became a silly a game
Some things cannot be bought

I got exactly what I asked for
Wanted it so badly
Running, rushing back for more
I suffered fools so gladly

And now I find
I've changed my mind"

You definitely are more than what you do, Darren. Obviously, none of us "fans" can possibly know you as well as your husband, family, and friends but most of us know that you are much more than a musician. You are a person first and what you do is secondary. I don't know if I'm explaining it right but I hope so.

You should've come to a place like Supercuts in my area. They wouldn't even have asked what you do...lol. Kinda funny in a way that I went to get my haircut too. My bangs were in my eyes and I was going nuts!! But I digress :-).

I look forward to seeing you tomorrow!! Still not sure I'll stand in line for an autograph because I'm sure they'll rush people through so I don't know if truly meeting you will be possible but I'll definitely be there for the performance!!

Love ya!!

QUOTE: 'Are you someone famous?' he asked

LoL! And soooo much more :o)

Aside from the "famous" aspect ... which I clearly am not ... I can
relate to the "what do you do" interrogation. And I often find I
make excuses for being an "at home mum".

It's always kinda irked me that people are so focused on what one
does. I have a degree in Education, and plan to one day return
to my chosen profession. However at present, I am needed at home,
and I often question why I feel 'unworthy' as I hesitantly answer "I'm
a mum".

Not the same, I know ...

Either way,
YOU are so much more than what you do!
That's why we LOVE you

I dread that question more so now than ever, at the risk of sounding like a bum.

A month ago I'd mumble "control systems engineer", to expect a "wow", to then say "not really, its quite a boring job" and then, upon an insisting listner, explain what the job entailed to then move on to what my real interests were.

Since quitting my day job I tend to yo-yo between web designer... singer... songwriter... actor... I really don't know what I "do" when I'm trying to find my bearings.

I was on the phone to my car insurance company the week after I quit to request a hire car while mine was being repaired. To prove my case, I was asked the "what do you do" question. The following week I had an acting job so I said "freelance actor". The lady on the phone proceeded to tell me that only full time people get these benefits and I obviously didn't need a car so urgently. I explained that I had more driving to do now than before, since all my "little" jobs require that I move from place to place. Upset, I noted that I was actually a full time engineer, and was on holiday and did acting jobs on the side. Her tone changed immediately and proceeded to help me find a hire car. Should I have just said "control systems engineer" to baffle her?

Is this some form of "what do you do?" discrimination? We see it on forms everywhere. Even in gym membership paperwork. Why should it set the tone to how people treat you? What other questions should we ask to define others? "What is your sexual orientation?". "What political party do you vote for?"

Cause really, when it comes down to it. I'm really just a "bum" at the moment.

Hey! Sorry for the second post but after reading Izzy's comment, I would say that he hit the nail on the head. I was avoiding saying this but what the hell...lol.

I have a few friends who are professional Tennis players so for about 10 months of the year they are travelling everywhere and even to some places on nobody's map :-). It is really hard for some of my friends to not let Tennis be what defines them and let it be just what they do. They love what they do but that's not all they are. It's hard to keep that perspective when they have "tennis groupies" around that only like them for what they do and not really care about who they are.

I know that professional sports probably is not like the environment of the music business but reading your entry, I can relate from the perspective of what my friends go through and seeing them make similar comments.

You love music. It's a part of your soul and who you are but its not all that you are. I'm sure you know by now not to let just one thing define you. But just to repeat...you are many things. And we're, your fans, lucky enough that you share parts of yourself with us...total strangers.

OK, I need to get my ass to bed. Wish me luck that I can get in a good spot to see you tomorrow and don't end up with someone standing in front of me...lol.

As always...love ya.

We love you because of your genuine nature and the fact that you aren't a "pop star" in the sense of not being yourself to have a hit record.
You write personal songs, that turn out to be fantastic and draw a lot of people in.

You are honest and you've fought hard to get where you are today, even if it's not top of the charts and everyone knows who you are and sees you on tv every second of every day. I personally think if it did end up like that some fans would lose interest very quickly.

Yes we want you to be known for your music on your own merits and hope that one day you do get there because then you will have made it on your own (with the backing of your fans of course!) and you will be so deserving of that position in life and know you didn't sell out to do it.

So glad you are in a happier place now and I'm personally glad I've been with you in a fashion on your journey to be where you are today.

I totally believe people are more than what they do. I certainly never define a person by their job. It's probably one of the last things I ask about them. However, if you're doing something you love then it is part of who you are. As a writer I understand the desire to create. Take that away from me and it would be as if I lost part of spirit, but it's still not the total sum of who I am. I love the way you express yourself.

I've always hated it whenever someone asked for an "explanation" as to who you are!

Lynne~ fallen angel~

I wrote this poem three years ago. At a time, I was at a very low ebb. I wrote it about a certain singer songwriter who managed to lift me up and set me back on track in knowing this life is about finding inner peace.

Because of you
I laugh more freely
Cry more openly
Feel more deeply
See beauty in the simplest thing
You unbind my heart and make it sing
I know I have been
Touched by an angel
With invisible wings.

You are somebody to so many of us. And so more than what you do.

Beautiful words, darren. (even if they were taken from somewhere else)
I hate it how people define you by what you do for a living. I work full time in retail (so yea, a checkout chick, pretty much). And when i tell people, they tilt their head, and go 'oh'.
But you shouldn't be defined by what u do. Because u only do it, to pay ur bills. To put food on the table.
Life isn't all happy and pretty pictures. ...but you can do your best to make the most of it. Time goes pretty quickly.... and its those times u were talking about, when u stop to have a look around, that u realise, just how precious life is.

Hey I had the same sort of thing in Melbourne - except it was the 'where are you from' thing, being that I was visiting from Adelaide to see Darren Hayes live again! LOL...
As for the other part - I would hope I'm not known as what I do, or what I have done. I still work in a supermarket (now full-time in a different company), I work the concerts at the Adelaide Entertainment Centre, I used to do pizza delivery driving... and I'm thinking about doing some DJ'ing around the place (done that 3 times now!)...
By the way... I have no life! LOL!

I sincerely hope to hell we aren't simply what we do, though most people judge based on that and well if I were to be measured on that scale I'd be doing a whole lot of nothing. Which really isn't true, well the way I look at it anyhow. I just start a lot of things, get distracted by something else and try that instead because I really don't know what I want to do, and probably will never know what I want to do. Which I know most people will find irresponsable, but...Who cares :B I doooon't. So long as I'm having fun with whatever it is I'm doing at the moment, the only person it matters to is meeee.

Doesn't make me who I am though, I do that myself. And it's really impossible to define entirely, and people's brains do love to be able to sort things into neat little boxes so maybe that's why a lot of times "What do you do?" get's confused with "Who are you?"

Buuut anyway. Now I really want to make a photo collage thingey that best shows who I am :O Hmm, maybe I shall do so later. Silly, boy. Making me think such thinky things this early in the morning, and want to do fun things when I have no time. Should be a law against that you know.

Oh! And!

Can't wait till Boston ^__^
I shall arrive super early so I can be sure to get in. I would seriously cry if I missed you :(

Beautiful words Darren :-) I think what we do can't be considered for the only measure of our success. What we do indicates some kind of success which might be viewed in the eyes of public and society but the measure for the real success is the subjective success, the one we feel and live. It's something you must feel, the happiness, giving and receiving love, joy, the satisfation with who you are and what you do, the feeling of having someone who can make you smile, laugh or cry, your own feeling that belongs only to you.
It's all that makes you who you are, not an artist but a man who's managed to touch the hearts of so many people by inserting a big part of his heart, soul and who he is in what he's been doing:-) And we so love you for that:-)

obviously this person has NO taste! Talking about authenticity, you have never needed to remain commercial to your fans, we always love everything you do! We just want you to always be Darren! I am just back home from a rememberence service at the local High School, ( our community was asked to attend ) I am very humbled today by the young kids responses to the war dead and injured, makes ya think huh! Life has a way of stirring those inner emotions! Anyway you have a great time in the US, sorry Richard has flown home, but absense makes the heart grow fonder, and all that! Thanks for quoting that lyric at the end, Darren, it just about sums it up.

I've said before on this blog (though heaven knows there's no way for you to remember every blog comment you receive, that would be silly.) that you are the most authentic musician I've ever known. You don't do things because the suits make you, you do what you think is right and what will benefit your music and even your fans in the best way possible. Just the fact that you're coming to America to do these signings and one-off gigs shows that. If a 22 year old girl with no industry experience, who has never even met you, can tell something like that about you, you've got to be doing something right! There has always been that genuine aspect to you and I thank whatever dieties might be reading this for the fact that you've managed to keep it up over the years because (and this is another thing I've said here before...I love repeating myself I suppose, hehe.) you've given me faith in musicianship, and you've shown me that in order to be successful you don't have to be some robot that wears tight jeans and ripped t-shirts because the polls show that's what your target audience likes.

I'm babbling. Sorry! This is just something I feel strongly about. . .Anyway, good luck in Cali tonight my dear, and I will see you next weekend in Chicago!

I once heard "fame" described as the "sombre renown of waning statesmen and chinless kings".

That was in the first paragraph of a book called Great Jones Street, by one of my fav authors, Don DeLillo. Strangely enough, it was about a reclusive popstar who retreats from dissatisfaction with the life fame and fortune has bought him, to a small unfurnished flat in the wrong part of town. Great Jones Street is in Manhattan but it could be anywhere. The search for self is in the mind.

I have also heard it said (and from my own Mum, no less!) that man glories in what he DOES, while woman glories in what she IS. It's simplistic, and maybe prejudicial, but there's a core of truth there. I have fulfilling work...but I'd much rather be "renowned" for what I am. Because what I do, and have done, over the course of a lifetime, has changed with years and circumstance, but what I am has remained constant.

And you... the passage of those years may have knocked the chip off your shoulder, but you've still got that fire in your soul. ;) That's what you are.

you know what, Darren?

everytime I read your blogs...
it's like I'm immersing into another world ~ your world
The world of your music and the world of your thoughts...
You make me think...
...about things I've never asked myself before

that's just so amazing...
thank you so much for making me think
LOL

and you're so much more, than what you just "do"
you've got a great heart, a great soul
you're just...you...
;)

Love
