You know those tunes that are the ones to instantaneously transform the dance floor from clear, to congested? It wouldn’t be too big of a surprise if one, or all, of these hot club hits came from none other than the newly famous songstress, Katy Perry. Escaping the sounds of this blossoming musician is nearly impossible, especially when the halls are flooded with tone-deaf imitations of the hit, “I Kissed A Girl“, or when the hits of Perry seem to lurk your favorite radio station every half-an-hour. But by the looks of it, listeners seem to have become captivated by the Katy cult, for more reasons than just her music. Her style, transition of upbringing, and overall confidence have swept the nation and influenced a plethora of teens globally.
From conservative Christian, to saucy songstress, in recent years, Katy Perry has made a drastic transition, and judging by her surplus stardom, her new-found worldliness may just be for the best. Growing up in a Christian based household, being the daughter of two pastors didn't exactly leave much leeway for the opportunity to tune into secular music. But as time progressed, Katy became exposed to the sounds of Alanis Morissette and Freddie Mercury. Although Ms. Perry had been put in a trance by the musical stylings of these artists, she remained true to her Christian values by releasing a self-titled Christian album in 2001. By seventeen, the budding musician began collaborating with hitmaker20Glen Ballard.
In following years, she teamed up with the Matrix, a Grammy-nominated production/songwriting team whose résumé includes collaborations with Avril Lavigne, Shakira, and Korn. There had been visions for the Matrix and Perry to become a singer duo, but ultimately the project was put to rest. Despite this downfall, Perry achieved redemption by appearing in a 2004 write-up by blender magazine who deemed her as "The Next Big Thing." In 2007, Katy signed with Columbia records where she was able to generate club-ready pop hits, and even songs that were controversial to not only her parent's values, but to an abundance of fans. One song in particular; "UR so Gay," brought about hype with its scandalous lyrics and video that accompanied. But despite the negative publicity towards the single, her hit "I Kissed A Girl," portrayed the right style of controversy that appealed to listeners, as the song seamlessly became her breakthrough hit that jump started her fame. The single even topped charts in 20 countries, and the accompanying album, "One of the Boys," landed on the Top Ten in America. Perry’s uniqueness has a massive impact on her success, she even says her music is, “A blend of rock chick meets Lucille Ball meets the spontaneity theatrics of channeling Freddie Mercury.”
Along with Katy’s individuality in music, her quirky edge in fashion has also took the world by storm. “I'm like a chameleon; I always just kind of ch ange and like, whatever...yeah. I woke up this morning, I'm like, 'Okay, I want to look like new wave meets California cool punk chick this morning.' But some days I wake up and I feel like I want to look like I'm straight out of the 1940s,” says Perry. And Katy’s chameleon style, has led to thousands of trendy teens to also evolve with her ‘kitsch’ fashion sense. But her sense of style would be nothing without a fierce, and outgoing personality to back it up. Even Perry describes herself as spontaneous and humorous. She lives for receiving outrageous dares, and surprising everyone by fulfilling them, even since she was just a tyke. But by the looks of it, not all celebs are warming up to this fireball. When Perry had proclaimed, “I'm like a fatter version of Amy Winehouse and a skinnier version of Lily Allen!',” singer Lily Allen, was less than private about making her feud and hatred towards Perry known. Even though her persona doesn’t appeal to everyone, she does have the support from excessive A-listers, some even including Madonna!
Who knows what this devious singer has in-store for us, but if its anything like she’s delivered, be prepared to be pleasantly surprised.
The spectacle of Katy Perry has just begun, and her fame is soon to become even more of a world-wide epidemic. Like she says herself, don’t just show up, put on a show!

Hey Katy! I have been a fan of yours for 2-3 years now and have looked forward to the day that the everyone else would get a chance to hear your music. I love your voice and your lyrics are always playful but still meaningful. This is why I'm a bit disappointed that you chose to release this video to my favorite song of yours, "Thinking of You". I absolutely loved the original video you released a while ago. I thought it captured the sense of the song perfectly while still allowing your personality and unique identity to show through. You are definitely unlike a lot of what's out there right now in terms of music and your new video (with the 1940's theme) has no originality to it and is not worthy of the song or of you. I apologize if this is offensive to you (I'm pretty sure you'll never read this but oh well) but honestly, I just thought you were above the predictable stuff. Your first video for this song was amazing and I just wish people had seen that instead of the recently released one so they could see how truly one-of-a-kind you are as an artist.
