Current mood:  disappointed
fuck this rap shit
i listen to classical.
-baatin

im sorry people. that is
all i can say about it.
sorry.

i'm really torn because the key to a victory is never admitting a defeat. but i'm so livid right now i need an outlet to just vent my anger. but im a smart businessman so i don't wanna burn no bridges either.

sigh.

defeat happens to the best of them. and yes i am willing to admit (and im sneaking this blog in much to the dismay of the "dont you go on myspace admitting defeat ahmir" cries of my family)

all night i heard "they never knew the wiser".

but fuck this rap shit. i didn't bust my ass all these years to just "get by" on the most important night of my life.

but that is what it wound up being.

the show i had in my head was a surprise around every corner. remember all that 2 hours and 59 mins talk of these blogs of late? sheeeesh my show was damn near over at 1 hour and 10 mins.

that is short for even ROOTS standards!!!!!!!

the thing is it's an art to pace a show for 3 hours. You gotta keep it 6 steps ahead: you gotta think "who is my weakest performer", "who will have the best responses", "who rambles?", "who has a tendency to stick to the script?", "who will fly off the handle" "best shit in the first 15 mins", "strongest shit in the final 15"---for all of the rep we got for spontaneity our shit is planned to the bone.

the last thing i wanna hear is the shit i heard tonight on my drumset:

or better yet:

me: yo is @..$%$.. here yet?
asst: no.....
me: what the @..$%$..!! what time did @..$%$.. say they were coming?
asst:7!!!!!

that was one scenario.

here is another:

my manager: @..$%$@ said they are not coming to rehearsal
me: huh?!?!?! the hell?!!?!?!
my manager: i spoke to !@..$%@@..$%'s manager and they said "i don't need to rehearse with the roots....they just freestyle i'll just go there and bust a verse and its all good"
me: the FUCK?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!!?!??!!?!?!?

between my assistants giving me news of guests not showing up on time (or at all), and the technical problems with the monitors and mics....i have to say to nyc im sorry that you fell victim to the hip hop nation yet again.

i call for help and they let me down

Thats fucked up.
The levity of the situation lies so much on your shoulders as well.. it is irresponsible and inconsiderate of those act(s) who brushed it off like that.
This show was not just a spotlight on the Roots but fuck on hip-hop... it was hip-hops debute at Radio City.
On OKP I heard y'all did the damn thing but I'm upset upon hearing about the acts M.I.A

I am sure y'all will still rock tomorrow night and I hope everything runs a lot smoother.

I subscribed to your blog for one reason.

Insight

Then after reading this I found out that I'm in the same boat regardless of the location, time and personnel.

There is nothing that I can think other than People have lost the reasons why we do things. Not just music. Everything. We have lower the value of all things to the common denominator. And yet people still can't meet this standard.

I'm sorry to hear this news. As I am hopeful. But, I'm also looking to stay clear of those that will not and do not know who to set and meet their own or others standards.

Stay True.
Stay Forever.
Stay forever You.

I feel you man it was nothin you can do but you live and learn. That kat talking about I just show up and bust a nut and leave he sounds like one unproffessional muhf*ka anyway. I'm flyin out of O'hare in 8hrs to go to this second show. I'm in a bad position right now I have to decide if I'm gonna go and see the concert, go and NOT see the concert or just stay myself home in the comfort of my lazyboi. I'm definitely goin to NY though just to kick it if nothin else but is this pretty much whats gonna happen tomorrow? If so then I'm gonna have to think about this.

when you're on the floor, it's nicer to at least look up at the ceiling. we all still love you ahmir and know you did your best!! :)
you have the blogs to prove it ;)
it's half way over. you have nothing to lose tomorrow night, so....there's that ceiling!! :P
have SOME fun with your music, at least. you ARE performing in radio city music hall!?!?!?!?!!?!!

so forgive yourself, have another homemade tamale, get in whatever affection you can with your woman and be thankful you'll have ALL of this to LOOK BACK on...and it's already half way over.

rough luck...yet its great that you actually give a shit about it all.
i mean its obvious that you put a great deal of time/thought into y/ albums
and gigs, it shows through, and people can see that. and that makes y/ shit timeless.
shit happens and people let you down and life sucks the life out of you....,
but remember all the life that YOU give, every time you get behind the kit.

I think the honest critique/ observation of the situation is the best. It allows perspective and realism instead of some cirlce jerk or "yes man" business.

Everyone SHOULD be on point and we should ALWAYS demand better of ourselves because no one else ever will. Cats gotta keep pushing for perfection and improving on this "rap" stuff "or else it's self destruction." - (Chuck D)

Ahh Quest u seem to possess the traits of an eternal optimist. I would be willing to bet that the people who were present at the show took home a much greater impression of the performance. I will be there tomorrow, well actually tonight, and I'm sure I will be highly impressed. An off performance by The Roots probably eclipses a standard performer's greatest night...so I won't let this influence my anticipation of tonight's show....keep giving it your all, the crowd will feel you....

Bullocks to that, saw u guys in manchester U.K last year and even though it wer'nt the longest gig by god i appreciate that shit! No one wants to be part of something big any more... well maybe not no one but some people. I think certain people need to be told its all about the music!

Damn man, I feel your pain. Unfortunately in life it seems that most times the only one you can count on is yourself. From your previous blogs it sounds like you did all that you could to prepare for this show and when the time comes you just have to let the chips fall where they may. It's a gamble. Sometimes it pays off and sometimes it doesn't. Thus is life.

Sorry to hear that it didn't live up to your expectations. Hope tonight makes up for it and exceeds said expectations.

Either way I can't wait to see your show on Sat. at HOB Orlando when it's just you guys Common and Jean doing what y'all do best. That is providing I'm lucky enough to find a scalper with a ticket in the $30 - $70 range. Unless of course you got some room on the guest list. LOL! just kiddin'. Actually no not really kiddin'....ha!

Just keep your head up Ahmir. Best of luck with tonights show and try not to let the stress get ya down man.

art be like that. especially when you deal with a flock that has no clue how BLESSED it is for them to be in the RCMH... i mean, some of us have forgotten that we havent even been here long. too comfortable. don't blame it on hip hop -- blame it on their artistic integrity... and next time you rock out RCMH or the Carnegie, send 'em VIP tickets to show them how its supposed to be done.

Little Brother

Sorry to hear about the show, fam....but real talk.....fan to fan, brother to brother, grasshopper to master:

You do it to yoursellllllf, just you.......and that's why it really hurrrts (c) Radiohead

Hip Hop didn't let you down last night. Niggers did. (and yes, I'm using the '-er')

We've had these discussions before, and I've STILL yet to figure out why you keep puttin' faith in unappreciative niggers who don't give a shit about you guys' legacy OR have any real loyalty to you personally.

Me and Pooh woulda loved to rock that shit....and I'm not salty about missing out, because I know how much of a circus that shit is to cram in all those acts (see: Okayplayer Winter Break Tour '04) and truthfully I need the time off with the fam (been touring since Janurary).....

I know LB ain't much of a draw 'cause Minstrel Show did "The Best of Phillip Michael Thomas" numbers and all, but still..... Bottom line is, niggas woulda showed up. And delivered. AND you know this.

From the sound of things, your niggas showed up (Com, Skillz, Dave, etc), while the niggERS didn't. And while you didn't name names, I have a vague idea of who summa these niggers may be..

I guess my advice is, a) stop underestimating yourself because y'all niggas got to where you are today on the strength of your own hard work and talent, not "....and SPECIAL GUESTS", and b) stop deluding yourself into thinking that these niggers are 'fans' of your work like that....most likely them niggers are Roots 'fans' just like I'm a D4L fan: cool for what it is and can appreciate it on that level, but let's be real: that shit gets no play in my ride (c) Stacy from 'Menace II Society'.

All I'm sayin is, you know who your niggas are.

Like that journalist said, y'all have the opportunity to pull an upset and fuck the homecoming queen in the quarterback's ride with "Game Theory."

But right now, these niggers got you lookin' like Carrie on prom night.

DON'T let that shit happen again.

DON'T trust them new niggers ova there.

Good luck tonight, my nigga.

Brotha ?uest, I am so glad you cleared this up, I still enjoyed the show but was looking forward to the surprises. I was cool with the usual suspects though. I don't know about anyone else but I really didn't like the sound in Radio City, the last time I was there was for Mary J. and I could hardly hear her. The only person that I heard almost clearly was Thought. Talib was totally inaudible and Common was in and out, and there mics worked. I'm sure there is heavy planning that goes into your shows but I think maybe the Roots Crew should always be the center of attention and if N1&&@z come thru they come thru and if they don't they don't. I've experienced the Roots Live on many occasions and by far your shows are my all time favorites, so I know how y'all get down. In all honesty leaving RCMH I had the feeling that something was wrong. No disrespect to Rahzel but you can only beatbox for so long w/o the crowd starting to get antsy so at that point in time is started to become obvious. MUCH RESPECT TO THE ROOTS CREW FOR DOING THEIR DAMNED BEST IN A TIGHT SITUATION. Apology accepted but none was needed because like I said, I KNOW HOW Y'ALL GET DOWN. Peace ?uest, hopefully todays show will not turn out like last night.
