VARIETY STORY

The above article features this interesting nugget...

"Wonderland's McG and Granada's Robert Green will exec produce alongside Barr; the extent of Pegg's and Wright's involvement is still unclear. But Johnson likens the effort to NBC's adaptation of Ricky Gervais' and Stephen Merchant's "The Office" for the U.S., with Greg Daniels in charge."

The interesting part of that is, no-one has been in touch with me at all. Haven't deigned to get in contact. So my involvement is indeed very unclear.

Would love to know what you all have to say about it.

P.S. I can confirm too, that Simon was never contacted either. I don't really want to get involved at all, but it infuriates me that they would a) never bother to get in touch but still b) splash me and Simon's names all over the trade announcements and imply that we're involved in the same way Ricky & Steve were with The Office.

Also, it's worth stressing that I will not be profiting from this reversion, nor do they have to get permission from me to make it.

On a brighter note, these articles on the subject are hilarious.

Fer gawd's sake...does no one realize that you can't take Variety seriously? Let's just hope they don't do with Spaced what they did with Coupling or the ill fated from conception "Americanized" Red Dwarf. *sigh*

Oh the US Coupling was god-awful. One huge mistake (besides the obvious attempt of remaking it) you have to cast a Jeff that is worth a damn!

Gods, I hope so! Sure, it'll make the THIRD time I've bought this series, but it's worth every last penny!

Any info as to whether it may keep the original soundtrack, or is that still all mucked up in the rights issues still?

Do Fox even do sitcoms other than Arrested Development? Maybe they'll make a few eps then cancel it. Why don't they just run the real series...crazy i know...

I know nothing about Fox but if the only comedy the ran was AD then they screwed up on that one, canceling that show proved that they didn't care about quality, only ratings...

I'd never even heard of Spaced until Shaun of the Dead. I've wanted to check it out for ages but never had the resources, i've mostly just read about it. The States just arent across-the-pond-friendly, and thats a damn shame. I know i'm missing out on a lot of things. For fucks sake, I cant even find an Indiana Jones movie for rent in any movie store in this town. That alone makes me want to move the 100 miles to Austin.

I hope this doesn't sound offensive, but God I hope they don't make it...why would someone attempt to add to something that doesn't need adding to? I think money would be involved in all that. It is indeed troubling news. Perhaps they are sending the vibes out there to see how people react to it...

OK, I have nothing constructive to say.

Hope all's well.

It seems to me that something about SPACED, which I doubt could be re-created by anyone but themselves, is how the friendship and history of the great guys & gals behind SPACED, was a big part of it's success.
I think this would have impacted a great deal on the final result that is SPACED and anyone that tried to re-create this magic, would be taking on something that cant be defined in a budget or a storyboard. If it goes ahead I hope it is not just a "straight copy" and that it is merely, similar, to SPACED. Possibly even with a different title. (this would help avoid association also, if it turned out a dud project)
In the end, personally, I'd rather not see it happen. Especially if the 'appropriate' SPACED crew are not involved.

Should I give this Kudos..? ..If I think it would be a bad thing?? Ah well, I'll just "sheep it"... here come 2 more!!!

Sort of related is the report that (as part of a safety net against the looming writers' strike) NBC wants to air the original version of "The Office," so, in that vein, why not just skip the re-tool and give us "Spaced," as is?

Indeed.
What is it about TV execs in the US that they seem to think the US viewing public are incapable of watching anything not made in America?

I feel as if I am overposting on this blog, but I shall continue anyway.

I think the "problem" with just airing British shows is the fact that the seasons are so much shorter, not much profit in that. So they try to rework it. The first season of the NBC Office was only 6 episodes long but that was OK since it was a mid season filler but it wouldn't have work for American TV long term.

I was just thinking what the US one would be like...perfectly white teeth, nice apartment, laughter track. I can just imagine it now "the wig, the glasses, the catchphrase, brilliant".

On another note, totally support the writers in their strike (from what I know of it which is not a hell of a lot).

OK too long, bye.

what saddens me about american remakes is that quality, original show concepts aren't given any shots because a network would choose to go with a safe, dumbed down version of an overseas series.

this also reinforces the fact that without people speaking in US accents, you have no luck of getting shown in the US.

but seeing as this is the way the networks are going, I put my enthusiasm behind an American remake of either of Australian comic, Chris Lilleys programs; 'We Can be Heroes' or 'Summer Heights High'.
Check them out.

^ Same issue though Henry - those shows would never work anywhere near as well without Chris Lilley because he created it as well as acting in it. There's heart & soul in there.
-
Just like an American Spaced could never be the same without the creators in it - and of course, without the heart & soul.
-
Here's my prediction: They will make a show about two singles who pretend to be a couple in order to get a flat. The similarities with the original will end there. There will be lots of hi-jinks and shenanigans and hillarity will ensure (not much).
Here's part two of my prediction: It wont make it past the pilot.

The fact that you haven't been contacted is appalling. I hope at least Simon or Jessica was contacted about this, because otherwise it's practically theft. Looks like you've been blind-sided by The Powers That Be! Congratulations.

Ugh, I can't see how a US series will work in this time period. The original Spaced (it's weird having to call it that...) is chock full of pop culture references that might not make as much sense for a series written in the present, so to fit the context of today in the US, it seems like a drastic re-write is necessary, and the thought of that is nauseating because Spaced as we know it is just too solid to be fucked with. If it comes to fruition, I'll have a very hard time viewing it as "Spaced," because it won't really be the same. Perhaps the alternate title of "Spliffed" would make it more acceptable.

No no no no no no no no no. Hang on a minute. Wait. What? Bollocks.

"They're soon surrounded by colorful neighbors and eventually begin a flirtation."

That sounds more like a particularly steamy episode of the Little House on the fucking Prairie than Spaced, so they've got their interpretation of the synopsis wrong for a start.

You shouldn't just be troubled Ed, you should be angry, and angry on the phone to someone.

If we take a very brief look back at American remakes of British entertainment, we can see the rot set in with Sanford & Son, the utterly pissweak remake of Steptoe & Son. We have everything in this remixed bag of American twat, from the Magic Roundabout, to the Italian Job (and of course Get Carter and Alfie...does Hollywood have some kind of vendetta against Micahel Caine?), to more recently Life On Mars, which you all know will be terrible. Of course, this isn't forgetting The Office. I don't care how many awards it has won, I don't care how many people say, "as remakes go, it's actually not that bad." It is FUCKING. TERRIBLE.

This is not, I repeat NOT a good sign people. Has anyone seen the American remake of Blackpool? Viva Laughlin? No? That's because it was axed for being immediately shite. American comedy, when I hear those two words I think of people like Mitch Hedberg or Bill Hicks, I do not think of how amazing it would be to see an American remake of the Mighty Boosh.

I'd be very worried Ed to see this being reported in Variety, with people in production already named, and have not heard anything about it yourself. Get on the blower, and kick some arses. Seriously.

I must've had a peminition: I was actually thinking of this a coulpe of days ago.
Would I want to see an american Spaced?
I'm not sure.
I think it'd be interesting, & though it could never come close to the original, I think i'd want it to be good, so long as the jokes are different enough.
If they kept the same script, it'd be like a pointless bad cover version. (you might as well over-dub Spaced with american accents!)

On the other hand, it could be great if they got Simon, Jess & yourself Edgar onboard as co-writers or at least script editor/consultants.

The climate for pop culture is pretty ripe in America for something like Spaced at the moment. There's been a ton of comic book films and the Big Bang Theory seems to prove that geek is ripe for comedy.

So if this does go ahead, I hope it isn't a "bad cover version". It does all smell vaguely of "cheap development" though.

I don’t think the point of them wanting to remake the show is the bad thing. The bad thing here is that there are articles being written and talks already in the process and the brains behind the series knows nothing about it. It’s disrespectful and rude. That show would not have been what it is today if Edgar hadn’t directed it. He has as much right to be involved with this process as everyone else. If America destroys it who cares we know what spaced is and we will always have the original. But Edgar should be getting paid or at least ask the mans permission. Hell I’m nobody in the TV industry but when I wanted to use a character similar to Adam Blooms character in Edgar wrights asylum. I asked Edgar and if I would never have gotten a hold of him I would’ve respect the authors work and found a different idea. So the point is not that they want to remake the show. The point is that is rude and disrespectful that Edgar knows nothing about it and has to read about it in a article. Id be pissed if some one wanted to prostitute my baby with out my knowledge. (its just a example people)

If it's aired on telly here (the States) exactly as it was in the UK, that will be utterly fantastic. If they decide to make a Yank version of it that is completely fucking pointless, like they did with The Office (why not just air the original over here?!), then I'll be right pissed off. But I've always got me R2 boxset of the show to enjoy. Still, for my unlucky comrades who've not yet known the joy that is Spaced, I'd just tell them to wait for the R1 boxset, which I know you've been working very hard on Edgar. It'll happen.

unfortunately for every "the office" that has worked, there are countless US adaptations of UK shows that are just terrible. And Fox doesn't have a good track record of giving a show time to find an audience even if the show is great. Something tells me that everything good about Spaced will be lost in translation, particularly if none of the folks (you, Simon, Jessica) who made the series the gem that it is are involved in the project.

I saw a video of it, and it was horrible. Everything that made RD what it was, was gutted. My family loves Spaced, and wouldn't want to see it Hollywoodized.

It could be done, but I would prefer to see it adapted with the Pegg and Wright's intent, intact, especially cast and set.

Just echoing what everyone else has said - I'm really disappointed in this decision to not consult or include Jess or Simon or yourself. It smacks of network execs seeing the successes of SOTD and Hot Fuzz and thinking 'hey, let's capitalise on these guys' success - didn't they do some TV show back in the day? Let's remake it, but with 26 episodes per season and zero plot!'
The fact that no one has been in contact with you, Simon or Jess shows how little they value the originality and love of Spaced and it is doomed to failure from the start.
I would be looking very carefully at how much they are 'borrowing' from you guys and see if there is any infringement issue, as well.

NO! This is ridiculous.. and a person who was involved with Will and Grace? I know what that will bring about.. and it's not a true adaptation of Spaced! It'll be a bad joke, cast and written to twist a great premise into standard Hollywood shiny-happy-crappy. In short, it will bomb, big time.

The success of the US adaptation of The Office wasn't luck, nor was it's production the result of what is described in the article above. I remember when it was announced, I groaned. I've seen too many British series I've loved "adapted" for the US market, into something completely unrecognizable. Stripped of everything that made the series much loved. It's because too many in Hollywood fail to grasp exactly what it was that made the series a hit in the first place.. or they believe that it wouldn't translate to the wider American audience.. which is a crock.

If they aren't involving Edgar and his co-workers, then it will never work. The Office wouldn't have worked if Gervais and Merchant hadn't been involved, I know that for a fact.
