I was going to try and stay silent on the subject of McSpaced, as it's usually a lot classier to keep your head held high and your trap firmly shut.

Unfortunately, I realised that I was now to be haunted less by the question of us ever doing a third 'series' and more about the idea of this new 'season' of Spaced.

I have just been through a good 32 hour period of e-mails from friends and colleagues that all pretty much contained the same sentiment, "They're doing an American Spaced. What the f???" (And yes they did, on occasion, use multiple question marks).

I have moved to comment on it further for two reasons. The first, and this is the lousy part, is that I'm thoroughly miserable about being dragged into the whole process.

As I said in my previous blogs, I don't personally have any format rights to the show, they belong to Granada USA and I'm pretty sure that while Simon and Jess would get paid for the reversioning of their original scripts, they don't necessarily have the power to call the whole damn thing off. (And I can confirm that Simon at least, would like nothing more than to pull the plug).

Deals for UK directors are not done in the same way as they are in the States and so I don't see any residuals from the new version. Or indeed the original version. That's just the way the deal was done way back in 1998 and while the sitution leaves something of a bittersweet taste for me, I always knew this would be the case. (Hey, I was young! The industry is a con! Someone ought to call a strike...Oh.)

I digress. Aside from all the legal aspects to my involvement, any self respecting fan of the show knows that along with Simon, Jess and Nira Park, I put my heart and soul into that series. So the implication in the trades by Wonderland and Granada USA that we may be involved in this new version absolutely pains me.

As I've said, I wouldn't necessarily want to be involved in a new version of SPACED. We've gone long enough preserving the memory of the original by not doing a third series, not to mention turning down SHAUN TV versions and sequels. Getting involved with this would be a insult to the fans who've supported the show for nearly ten years.

Put simply I wouldn't want to get involved in a new version of the show for fear of it being our very own PHANTOM MENACE.

That said, my beef with the trade announcement is more a matter of principle. I'm told after the fact that the makers of McSpaced had wanted to get us involved, but were told they couldn't pay us to be consultants (great!).

Either way, to not even make a courtesy call prior to making that announcement just a little rude. (And let's not even get started on the fact that Jessica's name was all but erased from the press releases.)

So forgive me for calling out Peter Johnson and co. at Wonderland (who I've never met, obviously) on this one, but if you truly are the huge fans of our work that you profess to be, then would it not have been smart to get in touch before you trumpeted our potential involvement in this?*

It's not like we're the most difficult people to get in touch with either. I'm hardly the Terence Malick of comedy.

I don't especially want to get into a war of words about it, but I am deeply pained that people think I've sold out and am whoring out our baby to a big network for a pile of dirty cash. This could not be further from the truth.

Someone posted on a forum about me, the folllowing. "Way to screw up a classic, you jackass".

Now when, in twenty years time, I release 'SHAUN OF THE DEAD: THE VERSION YOU'VE NEVER SEEN' with a CGI Jabba and the Spider Walk sequence cut back in, then and only then do I deserve such a slur.

Until then, I have to say it hurts a little. I can't stress enough that I'm not involved and am not going to profit from this new enterprise.

That's the lousy part.

The upside of this, is that I'm genuinely touched and taken aback at the fan response to this news of McSpaced. If the huge-fans-of-our-work-at-Wonderland weren't previously aware that there was a loyal fanbase for SPACED, they surely must be now.

A quick skip through the links posted below should show anyone who didn't previously know that there is a deep affection for those 14 episodes. And for that, we are very and have always been very grateful.

My favourite responses? The poster who wrote that this was the worst news "since Johnny Alpha got killed by that big flying monster in 2000AD". Also much kudos go to the person on CHUD whose simple answer to the U.S. version was this;

"Don't"

Anyway, I think I've vented enough spleen for one day and I don't like playing the pessimist anyway. I do know that some of the people mentioned in the Variety story that implied our involvement finally deigned to call my agents and set up a meeting.

Apparently they wanted to pick my brains about how to update the show.

Nice try. At least one day too late methinks.

Edgar, and I know fuckloads of other fans feel the same...I would NEVER think that of you. I know you're incapable of whoring yourself out in any way, shape and form. Remember that always.

And as for the cunt who called you a jackass, give a few of us Eballers 5 minutes alone in a room with him. He won't do that again!

Ugh. As a US guy, I've wanted to see SPACED after seeing SHAUN. "McSpaced" wasn't what I had in mind.

By the way, Mr. Wright, it seems as if most every British TV series is being "revamped" for US audiences-- Life on Mars, Footballer's Wives, etc. Outside of "Touching Evil" and "The Office", none of these re-vamps have worked.

Sometimes pessimism is good, like in cases like this.

McSpaced would(/will) be shiiite.

(On a lighter note, my Media teacher told us today there are hardly any female producers around and that if you asked anyone they wouldn't be able to name one, at which point I shouted out 'NIRA PARK!')

I agree with your beef, and I have to say, that you have been very classy throughout this. McSpazzed will not be the same. And NO one wants to see . . . you know . . . the spaced version of Jar Jar. I guess that would be a revised Colin. . .

Anyway, Kudos to you for taking the classier road. We should try and mobilize the fans to let them do the rest.

Well said. I hope you're okay and it's not getting to you too badly. We're all deeply upset about it, I don't know any true fan who could actually say they think it's a good idea. I think most of us know you all well enough to know you're not sellouts. Should the series actually go into production, it probably wont make it past a pilot and if it does you can bet it wont be UK Spaced fans who'll be watching it.

Another great post. You certainly have the right to sound off about this, and worry not -- your response is a hell of a lot classier than what the rest of us have been saying.

I was happy to see you mention the lack of attention Jessica has been getting for this. Any Spaced fan knows that the script was written by both Simon and Jessica, so the fact that she hasn't been credited in the press releases shows that the makers of McSpaced are not doing this because they are fans, but because they're anxious to ride your wave of fame. Shitting on a classic just to make a buck? That makes my stomach turn.

Anyway, if you and Simon can't pull the plug, then hopefully our collective public outcry will.

Listen, I purchased a region 2 player just to watched Spaced. I fell in love.

I don't know if love is the word I'd use when pondering a US version of the show. I don't think that it will translate, I don't think any of the spirit or creativity will be there. It was everyone involved in the original that made it work so well. I don't think that can or should be repeated. It's insane.

McSpaced.... it will have the same effect that fast food does on my digestive system. And that ain't pretty.

LEAVE IT ALONE!!!

Thank you for keeping us up to date on the situation.

If by "jackass" that fool means "genius"... well, you are a wonderful jackass.

I really love this post. One of the things I really admire about you is the fact that it's very obvious that you're passionate about your work. I find that really inspirational. So, seeing your work... your livelihood pillaged is infuriating and heartbreaking all at once. It really saddens me that there's nothing you can do about it.

What you do is amazing and brilliant. Big kudos for you for speaking up and taking a stand. At least you can look at yourself in the mirror and know that you said your piece. You know that you create things because you love it and not because of the bottom line. There's dignity in that.

And that makes me so proud to be your fan.

Spleen venting is good, for you anyway, probably not for the environment (spleen gases an' that).

Are you going to let them pick your brain on the matter or just wash your hands of it? I can't think that either of those options is particularly appealing.

The people that called you a sell out probably didn't have a clue about what was really going on (obviously).

When are you going to release the Shaun of the Dead which has never before been seen with digital updates? I'm hanging out for it.

I was reading through some of the links that you posted...I got to the Arcenic.net atricle and at the bottom they have the video of the two "gunfights". I watch it and I'll be honest...my eyes welled up. I loved that sequence...it was such a great idea. (And beautifully filmed i might add. The music...brilliant.) That was my favorite episode from the series.

There has been many-a nights (sober/drunk) where my friends and I will be sitting around the apartment or at the pub, and we randomly break out into what we call the "SPACED gunfight". The gunfight video was the first piece of SPACED that I had seen, which was like a drug...I ended up watching every episode that night. Since then I've shared SPACED with many of my firends. And they all say the same...it's a F**kin' drug. lol. ;-)

It's something that cannot be re-created. I don't remember what article it was but the writer brought up the fact that Jessica was a "real size" woman. And he can't see the US casting a "real size" Daisy. It'll probably be the typical young Hollywood Diva driven to anorexia by her peers.

This post is nothing but class. You're very professional about this whole thing. I'm sure it's eating at you inside. But you're actions so far have show nothing but class. :-)

Nothing but respect for you Honey. <3

I applaud you for coming out in your blogs and giving the true nature of the story behind this travesty.

Any true fan worth their salt would know from the get go that this revisionist bullshit is the last thing in the world you, Simon, Jess and Nira would ever want to see happen to Spaced.

I am sorry all of you have to go through this . . .it truly pisses me off!

Oh I see they are now trying to cover their arses by trying to arrange a meeting with you?

Utterly pathetic. And as you say . . too late.

I'd like to add my kudos also. Well said. This makes me want to get a tattoo on my forehead that says "even though I live here, I do NOT agree with 99% of the moronic decisions made by the various buttheads in charge". Buttheads because they have kissed so much ass they apparently have permanent indentations.

I watched Spaced because it was like nothing we have here. It's smart, interesting, and thought provoking while being dead funny. You know. Like nothing we have here (except maybe Scrubs. I love Scrubs). It makes me sick to think that there are people who (like with The Office) don't know the original, and will now judge it on this new "americanized" version. And for them not to even ask you, yet assume that you would jump right on board is just typical american ballziness. I think I just invented a new word.

But well, it's the USA, eh? They did ask John Simm and Phil Glenister if they wanted to be part of Life On Mars US. They can do great shows but sometimes they can be plain stupid...
Anyway, the only thing they are going to create is either rage from the fans or total incomprehension from the basic US (and especially Fox) viewer...I mean, Fox did cancel the amazing, almost perfect show that Arrested Development was. What are they going to do with Spaced? It's too good for them!
Anyway, keep up the excellent work.

Ugh...McSpaced.

My problem with McSpaced is that I have feeling they are going to give it the "Hollywood" treatment. That is, in the US version, everyone is going to be impossibly beautiful. (Or at least, where "ugly" means wearing a pony tail and glasses.) Tim is going to work in a comic book store only for a few episodes before he's given a high paying job. (It's just going to simply fall in his lap.) Everyone is going to be sleeping with each other by the second episode and that's going to be the main focus of every episode. Their flat is going to be huuuuuggggeeee and by the ocean. The pop culture references are going to be cut back in order to make it more mainstream. And the worst thing, there will be canned laughter.

yuck.

pass. I love Spaced the way it is.

Don't get me wrong. I don't mind a good remake. In the right hands you get Sanford & Son and All in the Family. But, lately, the remakes haven't been good.

Besides, if you want an American show with pop cultural references, that's witty and eccentric as Spaced, try 30 Rock.

"Never go with a hippy to a second location."

Words to live by.
